Chapter 8: The Night We Ran From The Truth
The message stayed on my father’s phone screen.
One picture.
One sentence.
And suddenly, the small apartment that had felt like a place of answers became a place of danger.
My father moved immediately.
He grabbed his jacket with one hand and my hand with the other.
“Ethan, stay close to me.””
I nodded.
I didn’t ask questions.
I could feel something in his voice.
The same thing I heard when storms came and he told me everything was going to be okay.
Except this time, I knew he was scared too.
Rebecca quickly placed the documents into her bag.
“Daniel, is there another exit?””
Daniel nodded.
“Back stairs.””
“Go.””
Nobody argued.
We moved through the apartment quietly.
The old wooden floor creaked under our feet.
Every sound felt too loud.
Every shadow looked like someone was standing there.
I held Dad’s hand tightly.
For years, I thought my father was the person who protected everyone.
But that night, I realized even protectors could be afraid.
We reached the back hallway.
Daniel opened the door slowly.
Nothing.
He looked outside.
“Clear.””
Dad motioned for me to go first.
“No.””
I stopped.
“You go.””
He looked at me.
“Ethan.””
“You first.””
For some reason, I needed to see him ahead of me.
I needed to know he was there.
Dad’s expression softened.
Then he nodded.
“Okay.””
He stepped out.
I followed.
We moved quickly down the stairs.
When we reached the bottom, a car engine suddenly started outside.
Everyone froze.
Daniel looked through the window.
The dark car was moving.
Slowly.
Toward the back alley.
“They know we’re here.””
Rebecca grabbed her phone.
“I’m calling the police.””
Daniel shook his head.
“Not yet.””
She looked at him.
“Why?””
“Because we don’t know how far this goes.””
Dad looked angry.
“My son is being followed.””
“I know.””
“Then why are we waiting?””
Daniel looked at him.
“Because if Melissa has someone inside law enforcement, making the wrong call could put Ethan in more danger.””
Dad went quiet.
I hated that.
I hated that adults were talking about danger like it was normal.
Like my life had become a mystery they needed to solve.
Dad looked down at me.
“Buddy.””
I looked up.
“Yes?””
“I’m sorry you’re hearing all this.””
I shook my head.
“I just want the truth.””
His face changed.
“You deserve that.””
We spent the night at a different location.
A small cabin outside the city owned by one of Rebecca’s colleagues.
Nobody knew where we were.
At least, that was what they hoped.
I sat on the couch wrapped in a blanket.
Dad sat beside me.
Neither of us slept.
Finally, he spoke.
“Do you hate me?””
I looked at him.
“What?””
He looked down.
“For not knowing.””
My heart hurt.
“No.””
“Ethan…”
“You didn’t know.””
He was quiet.
Then he said something I never expected.
“But I should have.””
I looked at him.
“Dad.””
He shook his head.
“When your mom was sick, I spent every day trying to save her.””
His voice became softer.
“I was so focused on losing her that I didn’t notice what was happening around us.””
He looked at my hands.
“I trusted the wrong people.””
I leaned against him.
“You’re here now.””
That was all I could say.
But I think he needed to hear it.
The next morning, Rebecca arrived with new information.
She looked exhausted.
“We found something.””
Dad immediately stood.
“What?””
She placed a folder on the table.
“The original birth records.””
My stomach tightened.
Dad opened it.
Rebecca continued.
“These were never changed.””
Dad looked confused.
“Then why did Melissa change the other documents?””
“Because the original records show the truth.””
Daniel walked closer.
“What truth?””
Rebecca looked at me.
Then at Dad.
“Ethan’s legal identity was altered.””
Dad frowned.
“Explain.””
She opened the folder.
“Ethan’s biological father is listed as Michael Hartwell.””
Everyone became silent.
My father stared.
“What?””
Rebecca continued.
“The documents Melissa changed did not change Ethan’s father.””
Dad looked confused.
“Then what did she change?””
Rebecca looked at the papers.
“She changed information about Ethan’s inheritance.””
The room went quiet.
“Inheritance?””
Rebecca nodded.
“Yes.””
Daniel stepped closer.
“Your wife had access to your family trust.””
Dad’s face changed.
“My father’s trust?””
“Yes.””
I didn’t understand.
But Dad did.
“My father created a trust for Ethan?””
Rebecca nodded.
“Before he died.””
Dad looked shocked.
“My father never told me.””
“Because the trust was managed privately.””
She turned another page.
“And Ethan was the only beneficiary.””
My eyes widened.
“Me?””
Dad looked at me.
“Yes.””
Rebecca continued.
“The trust contained property and financial assets.””
Dad stared at the documents.
“How much?””
Rebecca hesitated.
“Enough that someone could have a motive to control Ethan’s future.””
A cold silence filled the room.
Suddenly, Melissa’s behavior made sense in a different way.
The food.
The insults.
The way she tried to make me feel unwanted.
It wasn’t only cruelty.
It was control.
Dad sat down slowly.
“She wanted him to feel like he didn’t belong.””
Rebecca nodded.
“Because if Ethan believed he didn’t belong, he would be easier to manipulate.””
I felt sick.
Dad looked at me.
“You were never the problem.””
I looked away.
“But she made me feel like I was.””
His eyes filled with pain.
“I know.””
That afternoon, Rebecca found something else.
A hidden account.
A payment history.
Money transferred years ago.
The name attached to it was not Melissa.
It was Marcus.
Dad stared at the screen.
“Why?””
Rebecca looked at the records.
“Marcus received payments from an account connected to Melissa.””
Daniel looked shocked.
“So he wasn’t just helping her.””
“No.””
Rebecca shook her head.
“He was being paid.””
Dad closed his eyes.
The betrayal finally became real.
“He was my best friend.””
Rebecca didn’t answer.
Because there was nothing she could say.
Then Dad’s phone rang.
Everyone froze.
Unknown number.
Dad answered.
“Hello?””
Nobody spoke.
Then a woman’s voice came through.
Melissa.
“Michael.””
Dad’s face changed.
“Where are you?””
She ignored the question.
“You really should have left this alone.””
My father stood.
“You followed us?””
A soft laugh.
“You always were stubborn.””
Dad gripped the phone.
“Where is my son’s trust money?””
Silence.
Then Melissa answered:
“So that’s what this is about?””
Dad’s voice became cold.
“No.””
He looked at me.
“This is about what you did to Ethan.””
For a moment, there was nothing.
Then Melissa said something that made my blood run cold.
“Michael, you still don’t understand.””
“What?””
“You think I hated Ethan.””
Dad said nothing.
Melissa continued.
“I didn’t.””
My father frowned.
“Then why?””
Her voice lowered.
“Because Ethan was never supposed to know the truth.””
Everyone froze.
Dad looked at Rebecca.
“Truth about what?””
Melissa whispered:
“Ask Daniel why your wife chose him as Ethan’s guardian if something happened.””
Daniel’s face changed.
Dad turned toward him.
“Daniel?””
Melissa laughed softly.
“You never asked the right questions.””
The call ended.
The room stayed silent.
Then my father slowly looked at Daniel.
And Daniel looked away.
That was when I knew.
There was still one more secret.
One more thing everyone knew except me.
Dad’s voice was barely a whisper.
“Daniel.””
“What?””
“What was my wife protecting Ethan from?””
Daniel didn’t answer.
He just reached into his bag.
And pulled out a letter.
A letter addressed to him.
With my mother’s handwriting.
On the front were four words.
*“Open after my death.””*
May you like
And beneath that was a sentence that made my father stop breathing.
*“If Michael ever learns the truth, tell him why I chose Daniel to protect our son.””*
