Chapter 6: The Paper That Changed Everything

The envelope felt heavier than it should have.

It was only a few pieces of paper.

A few words written by my mother.

But holding it in my hands felt like I was holding my entire life.

My father stared at Daniel.

“Explain.””

His voice was calm.

Too calm.

I had learned that when Dad spoke like that, he was trying very hard not to break.

Daniel looked down.

“I should have come sooner.””

Dad stepped forward.

“You think?””

The words were sharp.

Daniel accepted them.

“I know.””

“Then why didn’t you?””

Daniel looked at me.

“Because your mother made me promise.””

Dad shook his head.

“My wife was dying.””

“I know.””

“She needed help.””

“I know.””

“Then why did you disappear?””

Daniel took a deep breath.

“Because Melissa made sure I had no choice.””

The air changed.

Dad looked at Rebecca.

She nodded slightly.

“Tell us everything.””

Daniel looked toward the old apartment building.

“Come inside.””

Daniel’s apartment was small.

Nothing like the homes I saw on television.

There were stacks of books everywhere.

Old photographs.

Folders.

A desk covered with papers.

But one thing caught my attention.

A framed picture sitting near the window.

It was my mother.

She was younger.

Smiling.

Standing beside Daniel.

I stared at it.

“You knew my mom for a long time.””

Daniel followed my eyes.

“Yes.””

“How?””

He smiled sadly.

“We met before your father.””

Dad became quiet.

Daniel noticed.

“I’m not saying what you think.””

Dad looked at him.

“Then say what happened.””

Daniel sat down.

“Your wife and I were friends.””

“Only friends?””

“Yes.””

Dad looked away.

Daniel continued.

“She helped me through a difficult time. When she met you, she was happy.””

My father looked surprised.

“She told you about me?””

Daniel smiled.

“All the time.””

I looked at him.

“What did she say?””

Daniel looked at me.

“She said you were the kind of man who would give away his last dollar to help someone.””

Dad lowered his eyes.

Daniel continued.

“She loved you.””

That sentence hurt my father.

I could see it.

Because after everything, he still loved her too.

Rebecca opened her notebook.

“Daniel, we need to focus.””

He nodded.

“You’re right.””

He reached into a drawer.

Then he pulled out a folder.

“This is what Melissa wanted hidden.””

Dad stood.

“What is it?””

“Records.””

Daniel placed the folder on the table.

“Before your wife died, she discovered Melissa had been looking into Ethan’s records.””

Dad frowned.

“Why?””

“Because Melissa found out something.””

“What?””

Daniel looked at me.

“That Ethan’s biological information was not what she expected.””

I didn’t understand.

Dad did.

His face changed.

“Are you saying…”

Daniel nodded.

“Ethan’s birth records were altered.””

The room went silent.

My father looked at me.

Then at Daniel.

“Altered by who?””

Daniel opened the folder.

Inside were copies of documents.

Birth records.

Medical paperwork.

Names.

Dates.

I couldn’t understand most of it.

But I saw my name.

Ethan Michael Carter.

Then another document.

Ethan Michael Hartwell.

Two different names.

Dad stared.

“Why are there two?””

Daniel answered quietly.

“Because someone changed it.””

My father grabbed the paper.

“Who?””

Daniel looked at him.

“Melissa.””

My father stepped back.

“No.””

“She had access.””

“No.””

“She worked with someone who could modify records.””

Dad shook his head.

“No.””

I watched him.

He wanted to reject it.

He wanted to believe there was another explanation.

Because accepting it meant the person he married had spent years manipulating our family.

Daniel pointed to another page.

“This happened after your wife became sick.””

Dad looked down.

“What does that mean?””

“It means Melissa started preparing for a future where she had more control.””

Rebecca looked through the papers.

“Control over Ethan?””

Daniel nodded.

“Yes.””

I felt a chill.

“She wanted me?””

Daniel looked at me.

“She wanted your father.””

Nobody spoke.

Then Daniel explained.

“Your mother had a life insurance policy.””

Dad froze.

“What?””

Daniel looked at him.

“She discovered Melissa was asking questions about your finances.””

Dad’s face became pale.

“Why didn’t she tell me?””

“She tried.””

Daniel looked at the floor.

“But she was already very sick.””

I remembered something.

A small memory.

My mother crying in the kitchen.

My father holding her.

A woman standing outside.

Melissa.

I suddenly understood.

“She was scared of her.””

Everyone looked at me.

Dad moved closer.

“Ethan?””

I swallowed.

“Mom was scared of Melissa.””

Daniel’s expression changed.

“What do you remember?””

I closed my eyes.

“I don’t know.””

“Try.””

I thought back.

The kitchen.

The old house.

My mother sitting at the table.

Melissa standing there.

“She told Mom something.””

“What?””

I pressed my fingers together.

“I don’t remember.””

Dad sat beside me.

“It’s okay.””

“No.””

I shook my head.

“I do remember.””

Everyone waited.

“Melissa said…”

My voice became smaller.

“She said Mom couldn’t protect me forever.””

Dad’s face changed.

Daniel looked shocked.

“When did she say that?””

“I was little.””

Daniel looked at Rebecca.

“She was already threatening her.””

Dad stood up.

“I’m going home.””

Rebecca looked at him.

“Michael.””

“I need to confront her.””

“No.””

He looked angry.

“She has been in my house.””

“I know.””

“She hurt my son.””

“I know.””

“But she knows we found Daniel.””

Rebecca’s words stopped him.

Everyone became silent.

Because she was right.

If Melissa knew Daniel was found, she would know the truth was coming.

Daniel looked at Dad.

“She is dangerous when she loses control.””

Dad looked at him.

“What do you mean?””

Daniel hesitated.

Then he pulled out another item.

A small recording device.

“This.””

Dad frowned.

“What is that?””

“Something your wife left behind.””

“Melissa?””

Daniel nodded.

“She didn’t know I had it.””

He pressed a button.

At first, there was only static.

Then a voice.

Melissa.

My heart dropped.

Her voice sounded different.

Not the sweet voice she used with Dad.

Not the polite voice she used in public.

It was cold.

Angry.

“You need to understand something. Ethan cannot stay.””

A second voice answered.

A man.

“Michael will notice.””

Melissa laughed.

“He notices nothing.””

My father’s face changed.

The recording continued.

“Once the boy is gone, everything becomes easier.””

I grabbed Dad’s hand.

The recording stopped.

Nobody moved.

Because everyone heard it.

Melissa wasn’t just cruel.

She had planned something.

Dad looked at Daniel.

“Who is that man?””

Daniel didn’t answer.

He looked at the recording.

Then at the door.

“Michael…”

“What?””

Daniel’s voice became quiet.

“That recording was made three years ago.””

My father stared.

“Three years?””

“Yes.””

Rebecca frowned.

“Why is that important?””

Daniel looked at me.

“Because the man in that recording…”

He took a breath.

“Is someone your father trusts.””

The room went silent.

My father slowly looked at him.

“Who?””

Daniel didn’t answer immediately.

Then he said a name.

A name that made my father’s entire expression change.

“Your closest friend.””

I felt Dad’s hand tighten around mine.

Because the betrayal wasn’t coming from outside our family.

May you like

It had been sitting beside us the entire time.

And now we knew who helped Melissa hide the truth.
