Chapter 5: The Man Who Knew My Mother
My father read the sentence again.
Then again.
Like the words might change if he stared at them long enough.
But they didn’t.
The paper stayed the same.
The handwriting stayed the same.
And the truth my mother had left behind waited patiently on the page.
*“The person who raised Ethan is not the person I was afraid of.””*
Dad slowly lowered the document.
His face looked completely different.
“What does that mean?”” he whispered.
Rebecca folded her hands in front of her.
“Your wife believed someone was controlling the situation around Ethan.””
Dad looked at her.
“Someone besides Melissa?””
Rebecca nodded.
“Yes.””
A cold feeling moved through my body.
For days, I thought Melissa was the reason everything felt wrong.
I thought she was the person hiding behind fake smiles.
I thought finding out about her would explain everything.
But now there was another person.
Another secret.
Another reason my mother had been afraid.
Dad looked at me.
“Ethan, I need you to tell me something.””
I nodded.
“What?””
“Did Melissa ever talk about your mother?””
I thought about it.
The answer came quickly.
“Yes.””
Dad leaned forward.
“What did she say?””
I looked down.
“She said Mom was sick for a long time.””
Dad nodded.
“Anything else?””
I hesitated.
“She said…”
My voice became quiet.
“She said my mom made things difficult.””
Dad’s face tightened.
“Difficult?””
I nodded.
“She said you had to work harder because Mom was always causing problems.””
Rebecca immediately looked at Dad.
“Did you know she said that?””
He shook his head.
“No.””
His voice was low.
“No, I didn’t.””
I looked at my father.
“I thought maybe she was right.””
The words came out before I could stop them.
Dad’s expression broke.
“Ethan.””
“I thought maybe Mom made you sad.””
He immediately reached across the table.
“No.””
His voice was firm.
“Your mother never made my life worse.””
I looked at him.
“She didn’t?””
Dad shook his head.
“She made it better.””
For a moment, nobody spoke.
Then Dad looked at Rebecca.
“I want to find Daniel Carter.””
Rebecca nodded.
“I expected you would say that.””
“Can you find him?””
“Yes.””
“How long?””
“Not long.””
Dad looked at the documents.
“Do it.””
Rebecca gathered the papers.
“I also recommend that Ethan stay somewhere else until we understand what is happening.””
My stomach dropped.
“Stay somewhere else?””
Dad looked at me immediately.
“No.””
Rebecca raised an eyebrow.
“Michael.””
“He’s not leaving.””
“I’m not suggesting he leave you.””
She softened her voice.
“I’m suggesting he stays somewhere safe.””
Dad looked toward the window.
I could tell he hated the idea.
Because to him, sending me away felt like failing again.
“I’ll keep him with me.””
Rebecca nodded.
“Then you need to be careful.””
Dad looked at her.
“Why?””
She picked up the payment record with Melissa’s signature.
“Because someone went to great lengths to hide Daniel Carter.””
She looked at the paper.
“And they may not want him found.””
That evening, Dad didn’t bring me back to the house.
Instead, he took me to a small hotel near his office.
It wasn’t fancy.
Just a quiet room with two beds and a small television.
But I felt safer there than I had felt in my own bedroom for months.
Dad placed my backpack beside the bed.
“I’m sorry.””
I looked at him.
“Again?””
He sat down.
“Yes.””
“You already said that.””
“I know.””
He looked at his hands.
“But I need you to understand something.””
“What?””
“I should have listened.””
My throat tightened.
“Dad…”
“No.””
He looked at me.
“You were seven years old.””
He shook his head.
“You should have been worried about homework and cartoons.””
A sad smile appeared.
“Not whether an adult in your house wanted you there.””
I looked away.
Because hearing him say it made everything feel real.
After a few minutes, Dad stood.
“I’m going to make a call.””
“About Melissa?””
He paused.
“Yes.””
“Are you mad at her?””
Dad looked at me.
“I am.””
“Are you going to leave her?””
The question surprised him.
But after a moment, he answered honestly.
“I don’t know.””
I nodded.
“But I know something.””
“What?””
“No matter what happens between adults…”
He touched my shoulder.
“You are not losing me.””
That night, I slept better than I had in months.
But at 2:13 in the morning, Dad’s phone rang.
I woke up immediately.
His voice was low.
“Hello?””
I watched him sit up.
“What?””
A pause.
Then:
“Are you sure?””
My eyes opened wider.
Dad looked at me.
His face changed.
Not fear.
Shock.
He grabbed his jacket.
“Send me the address.””
When he hung up, I sat up.
“What happened?””
Dad looked at me.
“We found Daniel.””
The next morning, we drove to an old apartment building on the other side of town.
Dad parked across the street.
I looked at the building.
It looked abandoned.
Paint peeling.
Broken lights.
A place where nobody would expect someone important to live.
Rebecca was already there.
She stood beside a man in his fifties.
When Dad saw him, he stopped walking.
The man looked at him.
“Michael.””
Dad stared.
“Daniel.””
I looked between them.
This was the man from the photograph.
The man my mother knew.
The man Melissa paid to disappear.
Daniel looked at me.
His expression changed.
“You’re Ethan.””
I stepped closer to Dad.
“How do you know my name?””
Daniel looked down.
“Because I knew you before you knew yourself.””
My father’s eyes narrowed.
“What does that mean?””
Daniel looked at him.
“It means your wife tried to tell you.””
Dad became tense.
“Tell me what?””
Daniel looked away.
“Not here.””
Rebecca stepped forward.
“Daniel, we need answers.””
He nodded.
“I know.””
He looked at me.
“Your mother wanted me to protect you.””
Dad froze.
“Protect him from who?””
Daniel didn’t answer.
Instead, he reached into his pocket.
He pulled out a small envelope.
“I kept this because I promised her I would only give it to Ethan when he was old enough.””
Dad looked confused.
“Old enough for what?””
Daniel handed the envelope to me.
My name was written on the front.
My mother’s handwriting.
My hands trembled.
Dad looked at it.
“Open it.””
I slowly pulled out the paper.
There was only one sentence.
One sentence that made everyone stop breathing.
*“Ethan, if you are reading this, it means Melissa failed to keep you away from the truth.””*
Dad looked at Daniel.
“What truth?””
Daniel’s eyes filled with sadness.
Then he said the words that changed everything.
“Michael… Ethan’s birth certificate is not the only document Melissa changed.””
My father stepped back.
“What?””
Daniel looked directly at him.
“She didn’t just try to erase me.””
A long silence followed.
“She tried to erase Ethan’s real identity.””
The envelope slipped slightly in my hands.
Dad grabbed the table beside him for support.
Because the secret Melissa had buried wasn’t only about my mother.
May you like
It was about me.
And Daniel had proof.
