Chapter 5: Grandma’s Final Message
The envelope sat in front of me.
I didn’t touch it.
Not immediately.
Because suddenly I was afraid.
Not of Erin.
Not of my parents.
Of the possibility that I had been wrong.
That maybe Grandma had seen something in Erin that I hadn’t.
“Open it,” Erin said.
Her voice had returned to normal.
Confident.
Almost satisfied.
I looked at her.
“You’ve been waiting for this.””
She smiled.
“For you to finally understand.””
I opened the envelope.
Inside was a single handwritten page.
Claire,
If you are reading this, then something has happened that has forced you and Erin into conflict.
I stopped.
Rachel’s words came back.
Grandma knew.
I kept reading.
My dear girls, I loved you both. But love does not mean pretending people are the same when they are not.
My eyes moved faster.
Your sister has always been charming. She has always been talented at convincing people to believe in her dreams.
Erin’s face changed.
Just slightly.
But I noticed.
Grandma continued.
However, dreams without responsibility become burdens placed on others.
The room was silent.
Dad looked uncomfortable.
Mom looked down.
I continued reading.
The house was given to Claire because she protected it when nobody asked her to. She repaired what was broken. She cared for what others ignored.
My throat tightened.
Then came the sentence that made Erin step back.
But there is something Claire does not know.
I looked up.
Erin watched me carefully.
Something about her expression frightened me.
I read the final lines.
The house was never meant to be taken away from anyone.
But if anyone tries to claim ownership through manipulation, deception, or pressure…
The next sentence was underlined.
They will lose everything.
I looked at Rachel’s name mentioned at the bottom.
Then another name.
A bank.
A trust account.
I frowned.
“What is this?””
Erin’s face went pale.
Because she knew exactly what it was.
Dad whispered:
“No…”
I looked between them.
“What?””
Mom covered her mouth.
“Erin…”
My sister stepped backward.
“You weren’t supposed to see that.””
My heartbeat increased.
“What wasn’t I supposed to see?””
Nobody answered.
I picked up the letter again.
At the bottom was one final note.
Claire,
The money I set aside was never for the person who needed it most.
It was for the person who would use it responsibly.
My hands shook.
Because suddenly I understood.
This wasn’t just about the house.
It never was.
Grandma had known something was coming.
She had prepared for it.
And Erin wasn’t afraid because she was losing a property claim.
She was afraid because she was about to lose something much bigger.
I looked at my sister.
“What did you do?””
Her face changed.
The confidence.
The anger.
The arrogance.
Everything disappeared.
For the first time in my life, Erin looked afraid of me.
Then my phone rang.
Unknown number.
I answered.
A man’s voice spoke.
“Is this Claire Bennett?””
“Yes.””
“My name is Daniel Hayes. I’m an investigator.””
My stomach tightened.
“Investigator for what?””
There was a pause.
Then he said:
“I’m calling about your sister Erin Bennett and the money she took from your grandparents’ trust.””
I looked at Erin.
She was already crying.

And for the first time, I realized the slap wasn’t the beginning of the betrayal.
It was the moment she knew she had lost.
