Chapter 3: The Secret Grandma Left Behind

I didn’t sleep that night.

I sat alone in Grandma’s kitchen while the rain continued falling outside.

The house felt different.

Same walls.

Same floors.

Same memories.

But somehow, everything felt colder.

My father’s words repeated in my mind.

Your sister knows something about the will that you don’t.

I wanted to believe he was manipulating me.

I wanted to believe Erin had nothing.

But deep down, I knew something was wrong.

Because Erin had never looked scared when I mentioned the deed.

She looked annoyed.

Like she knew something I didn’t.

At six in the morning, I called my attorney, Rachel Morgan.

She answered immediately.

“Claire?””

“Sorry to call so early.””

“I assumed something happened.””

I stared at the dining room table.

“Did Grandma ever change her will?””

A pause.

A very long pause.

“Why are you asking?””

“Because Erin said she knows something.””

Rachel sighed.

“Claire, come to my office.””

That answer scared me more than anything.

An hour later, I sat across from Rachel in her downtown office.

She placed a file on the desk.

“I was hoping you would never need this.””

“What is it?””

She opened it.

“Your grandmother left instructions.””

I frowned.

“Instructions?””

“Yes.””

Rachel pulled out a letter.

“Eleanor Bennett requested that this letter only be shown to you if there was ever a dispute regarding the property.””

My hands went cold.

“Why?””

Rachel looked at me carefully.

“Because your grandmother knew your family.””

I opened the letter.

Grandma’s handwriting stared back at me.

My Claire,

If you are reading this, something has happened that made you question whether you truly belong in the home I left you.

My eyes filled immediately.

Grandma.

She continued.

Never let anyone convince you that kindness means surrender. Your grandfather and I loved all of our children and grandchildren, but we also knew the difference between helping someone and allowing someone to take advantage.

I swallowed.

Rachel watched quietly.

“She knew.””

I whispered.

“She knew this would happen.””

Rachel nodded.

“Your grandmother was very observant.””

I kept reading.

The house is yours because you earned our trust. Not because you were perfect. Not because you needed it more. But because you were the person who always showed up when nobody was watching.

A tear fell onto the paper.

I remembered every weekend helping Grandma.

Every hospital visit.

Every repair.

Every holiday.

I wasn’t the favorite because I was better.

I was the favorite because I was there.

Then I reached the final paragraph.

But Claire, there is one more thing you need to know.

My heart started beating faster.

The property transfer was not the only thing included in your grandfather’s estate.

Rachel watched my face.

“What?””

I looked up.

“Is there another document?””

She nodded slowly.

“Yes.””

“What document?””

Rachel opened another folder.

“A trust agreement.””

I stared at it.

“What kind of trust?””

“One that your grandparents created before they passed.””

I felt confused.

“Why didn’t I know about this?””

“Because the trust only activates under specific circumstances.””

“What circumstances?””

Rachel looked directly at me.

“Someone attempting to challenge your ownership.””

The room went silent.

I looked down at the paperwork.

Then I saw the names listed as potential beneficiaries.

My name.

And Erin’s.

My stomach tightened.

“Wait.””

Rachel nodded.

“Yes.””

“She’s involved?””

“She could be.””

I stood up.

“What does that mean?””

Rachel closed the file.

“It means your sister may have known about this trust before you did.””

The same cold feeling returned.

Because suddenly Erin’s confidence made sense.

She wasn’t guessing.

She had information.

I left Rachel’s office with copies of every document.

But before I reached my car, my phone rang.

It was my mother.

I answered.

“Mom?””

Her voice was shaking.

“Claire, you need to come home.””

“Why?””

A pause.

May you like

Then she whispered:

“Because Erin found Grandma’s original letter.””
