Chapter 8: The Final Warning From My Grandfather

My hands trembled as I held the letter.

Not because I was afraid of what it said.

Because some part of me already knew.

Deep down, beneath all the excuses I had made for Dominic, there had always been a small voice asking the same question.

What if he knew?

What if the man I trusted most had been standing on the wrong side all along?

I had ignored that voice.

I had buried it.

Until tonight.

The ballroom waited.

Two hundred people watched as I unfolded the paper my grandfather had written years ago.

The handwriting was unmistakable.

I could almost hear him speaking the words.

Slowly.

Carefully.

Like he always did when he wanted me to truly understand something.

I read the first line again.

*Emma, if you are reading this, then Dominic has chosen them over you.*

My eyes lifted.

Dominic looked like someone had taken the ground away beneath him.

“Emma…”

I didn’t look away from him.

“How did he know?””

Nobody answered.

Not Dominic.

Not Eleanor.

Not Chloe.

Only Adrian spoke.

“Because your grandfather saw the pattern.””

I looked down at the letter.

The next sentence waited.

*I hope I am wrong about him. I hope the person you love proves me wrong.*

My chest tightened.

Because my grandfather wasn’t angry.

He wasn’t hateful.

He was hoping.

Hoping I had found someone better.

Someone who would protect me.

Someone who would never become the thing he feared.

I continued reading.

*But if Dominic ever allows others to make decisions about your life, your money, or your future without your knowledge, remember this: love without respect is not love.*

The words hit harder than anything anyone had said that night.

Because that was exactly what happened.

Dominic didn’t need to scream at me.

He didn’t need to insult me.

He betrayed me quietly.

With paperwork.

With silence.

With choices made when I wasn’t in the room.

I lowered the letter.

“Did you know?””

Dominic’s eyes filled.

“Emma…”

“Did you know my grandfather suspected you?””

He looked away.

That was enough.

I closed my eyes.

“How long?””

The silence stretched.

Finally, he whispered:

“Before we got married.””

The entire ballroom reacted.

A wave of shock moved through the guests.

My heart felt strangely calm.

Not because it didn’t hurt.

Because I had finally reached the point where the truth hurt less than uncertainty.

“Before we got married,” I repeated.

Dominic stepped closer.

“Please let me explain.””

I laughed softly.

“Explain what?””

His expression broke.

“I made mistakes.””

“No.””

I shook my head.

“Mistakes are accidents.””

I held up the letter.

“This was a decision.””

He looked down.

“I thought I could fix it.””

The words made me pause.

“Fix what?””

He swallowed.

“Everything.””

I stared at him.

“By hiding my inheritance?””

“No.””

“By moving my assets?””

“No.””

“By preparing documents to remove me?””

His face tightened.

“Emma…”

I stepped back.

“You don’t get to say my name like you’re the victim.””

Silence.

For years, I had been afraid of losing him.

Tonight, I realized I had already lost him.

I just hadn’t admitted it.

Chloe suddenly spoke.

“Dominic, stop apologizing.””

Everyone turned.

She looked angry.

Almost betrayed.

“You’re making it worse.””

I looked at her.

Interesting.

Even now, she wasn’t worried about me.

She was worried about the plan.

Dominic turned toward her.

“You lied to me.””

Chloe froze.

“What?””

“You told me Emma would never find out.””

The ballroom became silent.

I stared.

So did everyone else.

Dominic continued.

“You told me everything was controlled.””

Chloe’s face changed.

“Because it was supposed to be.””

That sentence revealed more than she intended.

Dominic stepped back.

“You used me.””

Chloe laughed.

“You let yourself be used.””

The cruelty of the statement shocked even him.

She continued.

“You wanted the same thing I wanted.””

“No.””

“Yes.””

She pointed at him.

“You wanted control. You wanted your company protected. You wanted your family’s approval.””

Dominic looked like he wanted to deny it.

But he couldn’t.

Because some part of it was true.

And everyone knew.

Adrian stepped forward.

“Enough.””

Chloe looked at him.

“You don’t get to judge me.””

“No.””

His voice remained calm.

“I get to tell the truth.””

He opened another folder.

“There is something else everyone should see.””

Eleanor immediately moved.

“No.””

The single word was filled with panic.

I looked at her.

“What is it?””

Adrian didn’t answer.

He handed the documents to the lawyer.

The lawyer reviewed them quickly.

Then looked at me.

“Mrs. Carter, these are records from fifteen years ago.””

My stomach tightened.

“What records?””

The lawyer hesitated.

“Financial records.””

I looked at Eleanor.

She looked away.

The lawyer continued.

“Your grandfather investigated suspicious transfers from a company account connected to the Whitmore family.””

A cold feeling spread through me.

“Why?””

The lawyer looked at the documents.

“Because he believed someone was using family businesses to hide financial problems.””

Everyone looked toward Eleanor.

Her face became pale.

Chloe immediately stepped forward.

“This has nothing to do with me.””

Adrian looked at her.

“It has everything to do with you.””

I stared.

“What does that mean?””

Adrian took a breath.

“Your grandfather discovered that Eleanor had been using Dominic’s position in the company to move money.””

Dominic looked shocked.

“My mother?””

Eleanor’s expression hardened.

“Don’t listen to him.””

Dominic turned toward her.

“Is it true?””

She didn’t answer.

Again.

Silence.

Always silence.

I realized something.

The people who hurt me all had the same habit.

When they had nothing to hide, they spoke.

When they were exposed, they stayed quiet.

The lawyer continued.

“Your grandfather also discovered that Dominic was unaware of the full extent of the transactions.””

Dominic looked confused.

“What?””

I watched him carefully.

For the first time, I saw genuine shock.

Maybe he had been part of the plan.

But maybe he hadn’t known the entire plan.

The lawyer looked at him.

“You were being positioned as the person responsible.””

Dominic froze.

“What?””

Eleanor’s face changed.

Adrian nodded.

“That was the final piece.””

The room became silent.

I looked at Dominic.

“You weren’t just helping them take from me.””

His face went pale.

“They were setting you up too.””

Nobody moved.

Because suddenly the betrayal was bigger than I imagined.

Eleanor had been controlling everyone.

Dominic.

Chloe.

Me.

Everyone.

My phone buzzed.

Rachel again.

I answered.

“Emma?””

“Yes?””

Her voice was urgent.

“We need you to leave the venue.””

I frowned.

“Why?””

“Because someone just accessed the trust system remotely.””

My heart stopped.

“What?””

“The person tried to activate an emergency transfer.””

The room went quiet.

Adrian heard.

“What happened?””

Rachel continued.

“The transfer failed.””

I exhaled.

“Why?””

A pause.

Then:

“Because your grandfather added one final security measure.””

I looked at the letter.

“What measure?””

Rachel’s voice lowered.

“The trust requires your physical confirmation.””

I frowned.

“My confirmation?””

“Yes.””

“How?””

She hesitated.

“By a biometric signature.””

I didn’t understand.

Then Adrian looked at the envelope.

And suddenly, his expression changed.

“Emma.””

“What?””

He pointed at the letter.

“Look at the bottom.””

I turned the page.

There was a small symbol I hadn’t noticed.

A hidden mark.

My grandfather’s personal seal.

Rachel spoke through the phone.

“The emergency transfer was attempted using someone else’s authorization.””

My heart raced.

“Who?””

Silence.

Then Rachel answered.

“The request came from inside this ballroom.””

Everyone looked around.

Slowly.

Suspiciously.

And then Adrian’s phone rang.

He checked the screen.

His face changed.

“What?””

I watched him answer.

For a few seconds, he listened.

Then he looked directly at me.

And whispered:

“Emma…”

“What?””

His expression turned serious.

“The person who attempted the transfer…”

He swallowed.

“Was not Dominic.””

The ballroom went silent.

“Then who?””

Adrian looked toward the crowd.

Toward someone standing near the exit.

Someone who had been watching everything.

Someone who had not spoken once tonight.

May you like

Then he said the name.

And my blood turned cold.
