Chapter 4: The Plan to Erase Me
The words at the top of the document blurred for a moment.
Not because I couldn’t read them.
Because I didn’t want to.
Sometimes the truth doesn’t hurt because it is complicated.
Sometimes it hurts because it is simple.
Because one sentence can destroy years of excuses.
My eyes moved across the page.
*REQUEST FOR LEGAL REMOVAL OF BENEFICIARY RIGHTS.*
Below it were names.
Dates.
Signatures.
And the name that made my fingers go numb.
Dominic Carter.
My husband.
The man who held my hand in the hospital when our daughter was born.
The man who promised me we were a team.
The man who told me I was the only person who believed in him before he became successful.
He had been planning how to take away everything my grandfather left me.
And he had been doing it with the people who spent years convincing me I had nothing.
I slowly looked up.
“Did you know?””
My voice was barely above a whisper.
Dominic didn’t answer.
That was all I needed.
A person who was innocent would rush to explain.
A person who was betrayed would demand answers.
A person who had nothing to hide would say anything.
Dominic just stood there.
Silent.
Again.
The same silence that had protected everyone except me.
“Did you know?”” I asked again.
His eyes moved toward the floor.
“Yes.””
The single word landed harder than Chloe’s accusation.
A few guests gasped.
Eleanor immediately stepped forward.
“Dominic, don’t do this.””
I looked at her.
“Don’t do what?””
She looked uncomfortable.
“Destroy your marriage over a misunderstanding.””
I almost smiled.
A misunderstanding.
That was the word people used when they wanted someone to forgive something unforgivable.
I held up the document.
“This is not a misunderstanding.””
My voice grew stronger.
“You all signed paperwork to remove me from my own inheritance.””
Chloe crossed her arms.
“You’re making this sound worse than it is.””
I stared at her.
“How could it possibly sound worse?””
She rolled her eyes.
“You never cared about that money.””
The ballroom became quiet again.
I looked at her.
“What?””
“You heard me.””
Chloe stepped closer.
“You always acted like you didn’t care about wealth. You said family mattered more.””
I felt something shift inside me.
Because she was right about one thing.
I never cared about money.
But that didn’t mean I deserved to be lied to.
“That money was never yours to control.””
Chloe’s expression hardened.
“And what were you going to do with it?””
I stared at her.
“That was my choice.””
She laughed.
“There it is.””
“What?””
“The attitude.””
She looked around at the guests.
“Everyone is finally seeing it.””
I frowned.
“Seeing what?””
“That you’re not as innocent as you pretend to be.””
A few people whispered.
Chloe noticed.
She always noticed an audience.
It was her favorite weapon.
She lifted her chin.
“You walked into this family acting humble. Quiet. Sweet.””
Her smile faded.
“But you were always calculating.””
I almost couldn’t believe it.
After everything.
After humiliating me.
After accusing me.
After trying to steal from me.
She was still trying to make herself the victim.
I looked at Dominic.
“Is this what you believed?””
His face tightened.
“Emma…”
“No.””
I shook my head.
“I need to know.””
The room waited.
“Did you believe I was pretending all these years?””
Dominic looked away.
That hurt.
More than I expected.
Because part of me still wanted him to fight.
I wanted him to say:
“No. They’re wrong.””
I wanted him to choose me.
But he didn’t.
Instead, he said:
“I was trying to protect everyone.””
I stared at him.
“Everyone except me.””
His silence answered.
My father’s voice came through the phone.
“Dominic, explain the trust transfers.””
Dominic looked toward the phone.
“This is a family matter.””
“No,” my father replied.
His voice was calm.
“Fraud is not a family matter.””
The word changed the atmosphere instantly.
Fraud.
Several guests looked at each other.
Chloe’s confidence disappeared for a second.
“Careful,” Eleanor said.
My father ignored her.
“Emma trusted her husband to manage paperwork because she believed he loved her.””
Dominic’s jaw tightened.
“I did love her.””
I looked at him.
That sentence would have broken me months ago.
Tonight, it just sounded empty.
“Love doesn’t hide documents from someone.””
Nobody answered.
Because nobody could.
The security manager quietly approached the event planner.
“Should we stop the reception?””
The planner looked around.
“I think the reception already stopped.””
No one laughed.
The irony was too obvious.
This was supposed to be Chloe’s perfect wedding night.
Her expensive flowers.
Her luxury decorations.
Her carefully planned celebration.
And now everyone was watching the truth come apart beneath the same crystal chandeliers where she tried to destroy me.
I turned another page.
There was an email attachment.
The sender was Dominic.
The receiver was Chloe.
My heart sank before I even read it.
*She still trusts me. She won’t suspect anything.*
My hands went cold.
I read the next line.
*Once the trust is changed, everything will be easier.*
I looked up.
“Easier?””
Dominic’s face changed.
“Emma.””
I held up the page.
“Easier how?””
He stepped forward.
“Let me explain.””
“No.””
My voice stopped him.
“Not another explanation.””
I looked at Chloe.
“Did you know?””
She didn’t answer.
“Did you know he was taking my inheritance?””
Her eyes moved away.
That was enough.
I laughed softly.
A painful, empty sound.
“You both knew.””
Chloe finally spoke.
“You need to understand something.””
I looked at her.
“I understand plenty.””
“No, you don’t.””
She pointed toward the documents.
“You think this is about stealing from you.””
“Isn’t it?””
“No.””
Her voice became colder.
“It was about preventing you from ruining everything.””
The room went still.
“What does that mean?””
Chloe hesitated.
For the first time all night, she looked like she had said too much.
Eleanor quickly stepped in.
“Chloe.””
But it was too late.
I had heard it.
“Ruining what?””
Nobody answered.
My father spoke.
“Emma, look at the last page.””
I slowly turned.
The final document was different.
It wasn’t about money.
It was a private agreement.
A legal statement.
And at the bottom were two signatures.
Dominic.
And Chloe.
My breath caught.
The title read:
*Marriage Dissolution Preparation Agreement.*
I stared.
“What is this?””
Dominic immediately moved.
“Emma, don’t misunderstand.””
I looked at him.
“Don’t misunderstand what?””
His face was pale.
“This was just a backup plan.””
“A backup plan?””
“Yes.””
“For what?””
Nobody spoke.
Then Chloe whispered:
“For when Dominic left you.””
The words hit like a physical blow.
The ballroom disappeared for a second.
All I could hear was my own heartbeat.
Dominic stepped forward.
“Emma, I never wanted to hurt you.””
I looked at him.
“You planned a life without me.””
“No.””
“You prepared legal documents.””
“I was pressured.””
“By who?””
He looked toward Chloe.
And that tiny movement told me everything.
Chloe had not just been insulting me.
She had not just been humiliating me.
She had been waiting.
Waiting for my marriage to collapse.
Waiting for Dominic to choose her family.
Waiting for me to disappear.
Then my phone rang.
Not a message.
A call.
The screen showed an unknown number.
Everyone watched me answer.
“Hello?””
A woman’s voice came through.
“Mrs. Carter?””
“Yes?””
“My name is Rachel Morgan. I’m an attorney.””
My stomach tightened.
“I’m calling because I represent someone connected to your grandfather’s estate.””
I looked at the documents in my hand.
“Who?””
There was a pause.
Then she said:
“Your grandfather left one final instruction that was never revealed.””
The ballroom went silent.
“What instruction?””
The attorney lowered her voice.
“He predicted someone might try to take control of your inheritance.””
My eyes widened.
“And?””
Her next words changed everything.
“He created a condition.””
I looked at Dominic.
At Chloe.
At Eleanor.
The people who thought they had already won.
The attorney continued.
“A condition that activates if anyone connected to your marriage attempts to deceive you.””
My heart pounded.
“What happens if it activates?””
The answer came quietly.
“Then every asset they tried to control is frozen immediately.””
Dominic’s face turned pale.
But the attorney wasn’t finished.
“And Mrs. Carter…”
“Yes?””
“The condition has already been triggered.””
I stopped breathing.
“Why?””
A long silence.
Then she said:
“Because tonight, someone tried to publicly frame you for a crime you didn’t commit.””
The entire ballroom heard.
May you like
And for the first time that night…
Chloe looked terrified.
