Chapter 7: The Person Who Knew Everything
The smile disappeared the moment I looked closer.
Because it wasn’t a friendly smile.
It wasn’t the smile of someone relieved to finally reveal the truth.
It was the smile of someone who knew they had been discovered.
The person walking toward me stopped beneath the chandelier lights.
Mr. Adrian Vale.
The man who had been sitting at the front table all night.
The man who had quietly questioned Dominic earlier.
The man who, according to the seating arrangement, was supposed to be one of Chloe’s family friends.
I had seen him before.
Many times.
He had attended family dinners.
Business events.
Even Dominic’s company celebrations.
But I never knew the full connection.
Until now.
Because he was standing in the photograph from fifteen years ago.
Standing beside Dominic, Chloe, and Eleanor.
Long before I entered their lives.
My fingers tightened around the picture.
“Adrian.””
Eleanor’s voice was sharp.
Not surprised.
Afraid.
That was the first thing I noticed.
Eleanor wasn’t afraid of me.
She wasn’t afraid of the guests.
She was afraid of him.
Adrian adjusted his jacket and looked around the ballroom.
“What an interesting evening.””
Nobody answered.
He looked at the torn fabric of my dress.
At the folder in my hands.
At the frozen faces around me.
Then his eyes settled on me.
“Emma.””
I didn’t respond.
He had spent the entire night sitting quietly while my reputation was attacked.
Now he wanted to speak.
“No.””
My voice was calm.
“You don’t get to say my name like you’re on my side.””
A few guests looked surprised.
Because this was the first time I had spoken with that kind of certainty.
Adrian studied me.
Then he nodded.
“Fair.””
The answer surprised me.
I expected excuses.
Denial.
Manipulation.
Instead, he looked almost tired.
“I suppose I deserve that.””
Chloe immediately stepped between us.
“This is unnecessary.””
I looked at her.
“Is it?””
“Yes.””
Her voice became defensive.
“Adrian has nothing to do with this.””
The room became quiet.
Because Chloe said it too quickly.
I turned toward her.
“How do you know?””
She froze.
That was all it took.
One question.
One hesitation.
And everyone noticed.
Adrian sighed.
“Chloe.””
She looked at him.
“What?””
“You should stop making things worse.””
Her face changed.
“You’re not helping.””
“I know.””
That answer shocked everyone.
Including Chloe.
I looked between them.
“What is going on?””
Nobody spoke.
Then my father’s voice came through the phone.
“Emma.””
“Yes?””
“Ask Adrian about the trust meeting.””
Adrian’s expression changed.
Only slightly.
But enough.
Dominic noticed.
“What meeting?””
I looked at him.
“You don’t know?””
His face tightened.
“No.””
That was the first time tonight I believed him.
Because Dominic looked genuinely confused.
Adrian looked at the phone.
“Your father is still involved.””
My father replied:
“I never stopped protecting my daughter.””
Adrian gave a small nod.
“I expected you would find out eventually.””
The room erupted.
“Find out what?”” Dominic demanded.
Adrian looked at him.
“The truth.””
Dominic stepped forward.
“No more games.””
For the first time, his anger wasn’t directed at me.
It was directed at the people who had manipulated him.
“What truth?””
Adrian looked around.
Then at me.
“Your grandfather discovered that the Whitmore family had been using private information from the trust to control Emma.””
My stomach tightened.
“Control me?””
Adrian nodded.
“Not directly.””
He looked at Chloe and Eleanor.
“But they knew exactly what they were doing.””
Eleanor crossed her arms.
“This is absurd.””
Adrian ignored her.
“Your grandfather noticed unusual requests connected to the trust. He saw attempts to change financial access.””
He looked at Dominic.
“And he became concerned when your name appeared.””
Dominic looked away.
I stared at him.
“You were involved before we got married?””
His silence answered.
Adrian continued.
“Your grandfather asked me to investigate.””
The room went silent.
“Why you?””
I asked.
He looked at the photograph in my hand.
“Because I was the person your grandfather trusted inside their circle.””
I frowned.
“Inside their circle?””
Adrian nodded.
“I worked with Eleanor’s family for years.””
Chloe looked angry.
“You betrayed us.””
Adrian looked at her.
“No.””
His voice was quiet.
“I stopped protecting you.””
The sentence hit hard.
Because it meant there was more.
Much more.
I looked at the photograph again.
“Why didn’t my grandfather tell me?””
Adrian’s expression softened.
“Because he knew you.””
I looked at him.
“He knew I would forgive them?””
“Yes.””
The answer hurt because it was true.
“He believed if he told you too early, you would confront them before you were ready.””
I looked down.
“And now?””
“Now he believed you would have enough evidence to protect yourself.””
My hand moved over the documents.
The evidence.
The recordings.
The contracts.
Everything.
My grandfather had planned for a day he hoped would never come.
But it had.
Chloe suddenly laughed.
A bitter, angry sound.
“This is ridiculous.””
Everyone looked at her.
She shook her head.
“You’re all acting like Emma is some innocent victim.””
I looked at her.
She pointed toward me.
“You know what the truth is?””
Nobody responded.
“You were always different.””
I frowned.
“What?””
“You walked into our family and everyone loved you.””
Her voice became sharper.
“My parents respected you. Dominic chose you. Grandfather trusted you.””
I stared.
And suddenly, I realized something.
Chloe wasn’t angry about money.
She wasn’t angry about status.
She was angry because she felt replaced.
“You hated me because he loved me.””
The words came out quietly.
Chloe’s face changed.
And I knew I was right.
“You thought I took something from you.””
“No.””
Her denial was weak.
“Yes.””
I stepped closer.
“You thought I didn’t deserve what you wanted.””
The ballroom stayed silent.
Because everyone saw it now.
The years of insults.
The cruelty.
The jealousy.
It wasn’t because I had done something wrong.
It was because my existence reminded Chloe of everything she believed she deserved.
Adrian looked at her.
“You should have stopped years ago.””
Chloe glared.
“You don’t understand.””
“I understand perfectly.””
“No, you don’t!””
Her voice cracked.
“You have no idea what it was like watching her get everything.””
I stared.
“Everything?””
She laughed.
“Love. Trust. Respect.””
She pointed at me.
“You didn’t even have to try.””
My heart softened for one second.
Not because I forgave her.
Because I finally understood her.
Understanding someone’s pain didn’t erase what they did.
Chloe had been hurt.
But she chose to hurt others.
And tonight, she chose me.
Dominic looked at Chloe.
“You planned all of this?””
She didn’t answer.
“Chloe.””
Still nothing.
Then Dominic asked the question everyone wanted answered.
“Did you know about the ring?””
Her face changed.
A long pause.
Then:
“Yes.””
The room exploded.
Chloe closed her eyes.
“I didn’t plan for Vivian to take it.””
Nobody moved.
“But I knew something would happen.””
My stomach dropped.
“What does that mean?””
She looked at me.
And for the first time, she looked almost honest.
“I needed everyone distracted.””
“Why?””
She swallowed.
“Because tonight was the only chance.””
My heart started racing.
“The only chance for what?””
She looked toward Dominic.
Then toward Eleanor.
Then back at me.
And whispered:
“To get access to the last thing your grandfather left you.””
A chill went through me.
“What last thing?””
Chloe didn’t answer.
Adrian did.
“Emma…”
He looked serious.
“Your grandfather didn’t just leave you money.””
My breath caught.
“What else?””
Adrian reached into his briefcase.
He pulled out a small sealed envelope.
One I had never seen before.
“This.””
He handed it to me.
I looked at the handwriting.
My grandfather’s handwriting.
My hands shook as I opened it.
Inside was a single page.
Only a few lines.
But the first sentence made my heart stop.
*Emma, if you are reading this, then Dominic has chosen them over you.*
I looked up.
Dominic went pale.
May you like
Because my grandfather’s final message wasn’t a warning about money.
It was a warning about him.
