Chapter 6: The Man Who Wanted My Son's Inheritance
I drove away from Harold Bennett's office with a copy of the trust documents on the passenger seat.
Six million dollars.
That number kept running through my head.
But the money itself wasn't what frightened me.
It was the possibility that Ethan had become the target of a plan that began long before Vanessa entered my life.
I called Patricia immediately.
"Someone has submitted a request to review Ethan's beneficiary status.""
"Who?""
"Ryan Mitchell.""
There was a pause.
"Do you have a copy?""
"Yes.""
"Bring it to my office. We'll review it carefully.""
I glanced at the road.
"Patricia, I want to know whether my son is in danger.""
"Then we need to act methodically. Don't confront Ryan alone. Don't make threats. And don't let anyone remove Ethan from your care without proper legal authority.""
"I understand.""
"One more thing, Daniel. Has Ryan contacted you again?""
"Not since yesterday.""
"Keep your phone available.""
I ended the call.
Then I drove to Laura's house.
Ethan was sitting at the dining table, coloring a picture of a dinosaur.
Laura was beside him, helping him sharpen his pencils.
When he saw me, he smiled.
"Daddy!""
I crouched and hugged him.
"How's my little scientist?""
"Good. Aunt Laura says we're making pizza tonight.""
I smiled.
"That sounds wonderful.""
He looked at my face.
"Are you still angry?""
I gently shook my head.
"I'm not angry with you.""
"Are you angry with Vanessa?""
I paused.
"Some things happened between the grown-ups. But you don't need to worry about fixing them.""
He looked at his drawing.
"Can I ask you something?""
"Anything.""
"Is the man from the house coming here?""
I felt my chest tighten.
"No. He has no reason to come near you.""
"Promise?""
I took both his hands.
"I promise that I'll do everything I can to keep you safe.""
He nodded.
Then he whispered, "I don't want him to be my dad.""
I pulled him into my arms.
"He isn't your dad, Ethan. I am.""
He hugged me tightly.
For a moment, I wished I could freeze time.
I wanted to protect that little boy from every ugly thing happening around him.
But I knew I couldn't do it by pretending the danger didn't exist.
That evening, Patricia called.
"I've reviewed the documents," she said.
"There are several irregularities.""
"Such as?""
"The application Ryan submitted refers to an alleged change in the trust's guardianship arrangements. It also claims that you were unavailable and that Vanessa had been acting as Ethan's primary caregiver.""
I laughed bitterly.
"She has never been his primary guardian.""
"Exactly. We need to challenge the claims formally.""
"Can she get access to the money?""
"Not through this application alone. The trust has safeguards. But someone appears to be attempting to create a legal basis for gaining influence over Ethan's affairs.""
I looked at the documents on my desk.
"What do we do?""
"First, we notify the trustee that the request is disputed. Second, we preserve evidence of the forged signature. Third, we establish a clear record of Ethan's living arrangements and care.""
I nodded.
"Do it.""
She paused.
"Daniel, there's another thing you should know.""
"What?""
"I found the company that prepared the guardianship paperwork. It's a private document service in Chicago.""
"Who hired them?""
"According to the payment record, the account belongs to a company called Mitchell Residential Group.""
I closed my eyes.
"Ryan's company.""
"Yes.""
I looked out the window.
"So this wasn't some misunderstanding.""
"No. But we still need to establish who knew what and when.""
I thanked her.
Then I sat alone for a long time.
The next morning, I received a call from an unfamiliar number.
"Mr. Carter?""
"Yes.""
"My name is Richard Mitchell.""
I stood immediately.
I knew that name.
Rebecca's letter.
Her father's former business partner.
"How did you get my number?""
"Through a mutual business contact. I believe we need to discuss a family matter.""
I laughed without humor.
"There is no family matter between us.""
"Actually, there is. My son has become involved with your wife.""
"Your son has been sleeping with my wife.""
Richard sighed.
"Relationships are complicated.""
"Not complicated enough to excuse what you've done.""
There was a pause.
Then his voice became colder.
"Mr. Carter, I suggest you stop making emotional decisions.""
I gripped the phone.
"Is that a threat?""
"Not at all. I'm offering you an opportunity to resolve this situation quietly.""
"What situation?""
"Your marriage. The guardianship matter. The trust.""
I felt my stomach tighten.
"You know about the trust.""
"Of course I do.""
"How?""
"Rebecca's father and I worked together for many years.""
"Then you know exactly why you have no authority over it.""
Richard chuckled.
"Authority is often a matter of documentation.""
I looked at the forged signature.
"Is that why your son forged my name?""
Richard became silent.
Then he said, "I don't know what you're referring to.""
"Then you should ask him.""
I ended the call.
My hands were shaking.
I immediately sent Patricia a message documenting the conversation.
Then I called Harold.
He answered quickly.
"Daniel?""
"Richard Mitchell just contacted me.""
Harold's tone changed.
"What did he say?""
"He wants to discuss the trust and the guardianship matter.""
There was a long pause.
"Daniel, listen to me carefully. Do not meet him alone.""
"Why?""
"Because Richard has been trying to regain access to that trust for years.""
I stared at the wall.
"How far would he go?""
Harold sighed.
"I cannot predict what anyone will do. But I can tell you that Rebecca's father was extremely concerned about him.""
I lowered my voice.
"What exactly happened between them?""
Harold hesitated.
"Richard was once entrusted with confidential financial information. He used that information to approach several beneficiaries directly, attempting to persuade them to change their arrangements.""
"Did he succeed?""
"No. But one family member nearly lost control of a substantial inheritance.""
I felt cold.
"Who?""
Harold didn't answer immediately.
Then he said:
"Rebecca.""
That afternoon, I returned to the house with Laura.
Vanessa was sitting in the living room.
She looked up when we entered.
"Finally.""
I ignored her.
I went straight toward the hallway.
"Daniel, we need to talk.""
"Not now.""
"Yes, now.""
She stood and followed me.
Laura remained near the doorway.
Vanessa lowered her voice.
"I know you've been speaking to Harold Bennett.""
I turned.
"How?""
"Because he called me.""
I stared at her.
"Why would he call you?""
"To ask questions about the application.""
I folded my arms.
"And what did you tell him?""
"The truth.""
I almost laughed.
"Which version?""
She looked offended.
"You're being cruel.""
I took out my phone.
"Did you know Ryan had submitted a request concerning Ethan's inheritance?""
Her expression changed.
"I don't know what you're talking about.""
"Don't lie.""
She looked toward Laura.
Then back at me.
"Ryan said it was just an administrative review.""
"An administrative review?""
"Yes.""
"Of a six-million-dollar trust belonging to my son?""
She flinched.
I stepped closer.
"Did you know about the forged signature?""
She shook her head.
"No.""
"Did you know Ryan's father was involved?""
She said nothing.
I watched her face.
"Vanessa, answer me.""
Finally, she whispered, "Richard said he was only trying to protect his family's interests.""
I stared at her.
"His family's interests?""
"Please, Daniel. You don't understand.""
"Then help me understand.""
She began crying.
"Ryan told me that if we could get the guardianship arrangement changed, we could manage Ethan's affairs properly.""
"Why would you need to manage them?""
"Because you don't know anything about the trust!""
I went still.
She realized what she had said.
I looked directly at her.
"How long have you known about Rebecca's inheritance?""
Vanessa wiped her cheeks.
"Since before we married.""
My chest tightened.
"Before we married?""
She nodded.
"Ryan told me.""
I couldn't believe it.
"So you knew about the trust when you agreed to marry me?""
She looked away.
"At first, I didn't care about it.""
"At first?""
She began speaking faster.
"Ryan said there were problems with the trust. He said your wife had left things unfinished. He told me that Ethan needed someone who understood financial matters.""
I stared at her.
"And you believed him?""
"He promised that if everything worked out, we would have a future together.""
I let out a slow breath.
"Was that why you married me?""
She shook her head.
"Not entirely.""
I looked at her.
"Not entirely?""
She covered her face.
"I loved you, Daniel. I really did.""
I felt nothing but exhaustion.
"Then why did you help him?""
She looked up.
"Because I thought we could have everything.""
"What is everything?""
She whispered, "The money. The house. A life with Ryan.""
Laura stepped forward.
"You're disgusting.""
Vanessa turned angrily.
"Stay out of this!""
I raised my hand.
"Enough.""
I looked at Vanessa.
"Did Ryan tell you what he planned to do with Ethan?""
She shook her head.
"Not exactly.""
I felt the familiar coldness return.
"What does that mean?""
"He said Ethan would eventually live with us.""
"With you and Ryan?""
She nodded.
"And me?""
She didn't answer.
I stared at her.
"Did he plan to remove me from my son's life?""
Vanessa began crying harder.
"I thought you would still be involved.""
"How generous.""
"Daniel, please!""
I stepped backward.
"You're done. You don't get to make decisions about Ethan anymore.""
She looked up sharply.
"You can't do that!""
"I can take steps to protect my son.""
"He's my family too!""
I looked at her for a long moment.
"No, Vanessa. Family doesn't use a child as a way to get access to his inheritance.""
She slapped the table.
"You don't understand what Ryan promised me!""
I turned toward the door.
"Then perhaps you should have asked what he promised Ethan.""
I walked away.
That evening, Patricia called with an update.
"We've submitted a formal objection to the guardianship request and notified the trustee about the disputed documents.""
"Good.""
"There's something else. The company associated with Ryan has made several payments to an account connected to a private legal consultant.""
"Who is the consultant?""
She gave me a name.
I wrote it down.
Then she continued.
"We're looking into the transactions. But I need you to understand that financial irregularities don't automatically establish criminal conduct.""
"I understand.""
"Also, I recommend that you avoid any direct contact with Ryan or his father until we know more.""
I agreed.
After the call, I went to Laura's guest room.
Ethan was asleep.
His drawing was resting on the bedside table.
The little boy, the father, and the woman standing far away.
I sat beside him and gently pulled the blanket over his shoulder.
Then I noticed a folded piece of paper sticking out from beneath his pillow.
I opened it.
It was a small note written in a child's handwriting.
Dear Dad,
I heard Vanessa talking to Ryan again.
She said he was going to take me somewhere, but I don't want to go.
She said you wouldn't be able to stop them.
Please don't let him take me away.
I felt my eyes burn.
I placed the note carefully in my pocket.
Then my phone vibrated.
An email had arrived from an unknown sender.
There was no message.
Only an attachment.
I opened it.
It was a photograph of an old document.
The title read:
*ORIGINAL BENEFICIARY DESIGNATION — CARTER FAMILY TRUST.*
I looked at the bottom.
Rebecca's signature was there.
But beside her name was another signature.
Richard Mitchell.
And underneath it was a handwritten statement that made my blood run cold.
*If Rebecca Carter dies before the beneficiary reaches adulthood, the appointed alternate administrator shall assume temporary control of the trust.*
I read the name of the alternate administrator.
It wasn't me.
It wasn't Harold.
It was Vanessa Carter.
I stared at the screen.
My wife hadn't simply been trying to become Ethan's guardian.
Someone had already placed her in a position of potential influence over his inheritance.
And I suddenly understood why Richard Mitchell had been so interested in my marriage.
But the most disturbing part was still ahead.
Because beneath the photograph, the anonymous sender had written one final message:
*Mr. Carter, check the date this document was signed. Rebecca was already seriously ill. And she wasn't the person who requested this change.*
I zoomed in on the document.
The date was seven years earlier.
Three weeks before Rebecca died.
And the signature requesting the change was unmistakably hers.
But there was something wrong.
I had been beside Rebecca every single day during those final weeks.
I knew how weak she had become.
I knew she could barely hold a pen.
And I knew she had never once mentioned Richard Mitchell.
I looked at the sleeping boy beside me.
Then I whispered:
"Rebecca, what did they make you sign?""
My phone vibrated again.
May you like
This time, the message contained only six words.
*Your wife knows how Rebecca really died.*
