Chapter 5: The Letter My First Wife Left Behind

I spent that evening at Laura's house.

Ethan was asleep in the guest bedroom, while Laura and I sat at the kitchen table.

I kept looking at Vanessa's messages.

Rebecca's name was still visible on my phone.

Laura noticed.

"What did she say?""

I handed her the device.

She read the messages slowly.

When she reached the final one, she looked up.

"Daniel, what does she mean?""

"I don't know.""

"Could Rebecca have left something?""

I shook my head.

"Not that I know of.""

Laura folded her arms.

"Think carefully.""

I closed my eyes.

Rebecca and I had been married for nine years. She was organized, thoughtful, and extremely careful about Ethan's future.

Before she died, she had arranged his education savings, medical records, and several financial accounts.

But I had handled everything afterward.

I had assumed there was nothing else.

Then I remembered something.

A small wooden box.

Rebecca had kept it in the bottom drawer of her old writing desk.

After her funeral, I had moved the desk into storage because I couldn't bear looking at it.

I hadn't opened that drawer in years.

I looked at Laura.

"There's something at the house.""

"What?""

"Rebecca's old desk.""

Laura stood.

"Then we need to get it.""

The next morning, I returned to my house with Laura.

I had already informed Patricia that I needed to retrieve some personal belongings.

She advised me not to confront Vanessa and to avoid any unnecessary arguments.

When we arrived, Vanessa was standing near the front door.

She looked surprised to see Laura.

"Why is she here?""

Laura gave her a cold look.

"Good morning to you too.""

Vanessa crossed her arms.

"Daniel, we need to talk.""

"I need to collect something from the storage room.""

"What?""

"Rebecca's desk.""

Her face changed.

For a moment, she looked almost frightened.

Then she forced a smile.

"Why would you want that old thing?""

I stared at her.

"Because it belongs to my family.""

She stepped in front of the hallway.

"Daniel, please. We should discuss what's happening before you start digging through old things.""

I looked at her.

"Move.""

She didn't.

Laura stepped forward.

"Vanessa, don't make this worse.""

Vanessa turned toward her.

"This is between my husband and me.""

Laura laughed.

"Then perhaps you should have remembered that before inviting your boyfriend into their home.""

Vanessa's face reddened.

"Stay out of my marriage!""

I moved past them.

"Enough.""

I went downstairs to the storage room.

The old desk was covered with a white sheet.

I removed it carefully.

The familiar smell of cedarwood and old paper brought back memories I hadn't expected.

Rebecca used to sit at that desk every evening, writing letters while Ethan slept.

I opened the bottom drawer.

It was locked.

I remembered keeping a small brass key in the side compartment.

After searching for a minute, I found it.

The lock clicked.

Inside was the wooden box.

I lifted it out.

There were several photographs, an old necklace, and a sealed envelope.

The envelope had my name written on it.

In Rebecca's handwriting.

*For Daniel. If something happens to me before Ethan grows up.*

My knees almost gave way.

I sat on the floor.

Laura crouched beside me.

"Open it.""

I carefully broke the seal.

Inside was a letter.

I recognized every curve of Rebecca's handwriting.

My darling Daniel,

If you're reading this, then I am no longer beside you, and I wish more than anything that I could be there to hold your hand.

There are things about my family that I never had the courage to tell you. I thought I had enough time to explain everything.

I stopped reading.

Laura touched my shoulder.

"Keep going.""

I swallowed and continued.

Before Ethan was born, my father established a family trust. It was intended to protect our son and ensure that he would always have financial security.

The trust contains property interests, investment accounts, and educational funds. You are his father and his primary guardian. I made sure of that.

But there is one condition I want you to understand.

No one should ever be allowed to use Ethan's inheritance to control his future.

I looked at Laura.

"What inheritance?""

She shook her head.

I continued.

The trust is administered independently. Any major change involving Ethan's guardianship or the management of his assets requires verification from the appointed trustee.

Please do not let anyone convince you that signing a simple family document is harmless.

My fingers began trembling.

The next paragraph was even more disturbing.

I once trusted someone I should not have trusted. His name is Richard Mitchell.

I stopped.

Laura leaned closer.

"Mitchell?""

I nodded.

I read the next line aloud.

"Richard Mitchell was my father's former business partner.""

I looked at the letter again.

He knows about Ethan's trust. He once tried to persuade my father to give him access to the investment portfolio. My father refused.

If anyone from that family approaches you after my death, please be careful.

I felt the room spinning.

The Mitchell family.

Ryan Mitchell.

I continued reading.

There is another reason I am writing this.

When Ethan was born, I discovered that certain documents connected to the trust had been copied without authorization. My father believed Richard was responsible.

I don't know whether he acted alone.

Please keep the original trust papers safe. They are in the envelope marked BLUE inside my father's old safe-deposit box.

I love you, Daniel. And I love our little boy more than anything in this world.

Promise me you'll protect him.

Forever yours,

Rebecca.

I lowered the letter.

For several seconds, I couldn't speak.

Laura took it from my hands and read it herself.

Her face became pale.

"Daniel, do you think Ryan is related to Richard?""

"I don't know.""

"Have you ever heard of this man before?""

I shook my head.

"Rebecca mentioned her father's business partners, but I never paid much attention.""

I folded the letter carefully.

Then I heard footsteps behind us.

Vanessa was standing at the storage room entrance.

She had clearly heard the last part.

Her eyes were fixed on the letter.

"Where did you find that?""

I stood.

"Why do you care?""

She looked at the paper.

"Daniel, give me that.""

I stepped backward.

"No.""

She moved closer.

"That's a private family letter.""

"It's my wife's letter.""

"Your first wife," she snapped.

The words hung in the air.

Laura stepped forward.

"Watch your mouth.""

Vanessa ignored her.

"Daniel, you don't understand what that letter means.""

I stared at her.

"Then explain it.""

She looked toward the staircase.

Then back at me.

"Rebecca was keeping things from you.""

"Apparently.""

"She wasn't as innocent as you think.""

My jaw tightened.

"Be careful.""

Vanessa folded her arms.

"Her family had serious financial problems. She left behind obligations you know nothing about.""

I stared at her.

"How do you know about those?""

She didn't answer.

I took out my phone.

"Did Ryan tell you about Rebecca's family?""

Her face changed.

That was enough.

I walked past her.

"Daniel!"" she shouted.

I didn't stop.

That afternoon, Patricia arranged for me to speak with the trustee named in Rebecca's letter.

His name was Harold Bennett.

He was a retired attorney who had handled my father-in-law's estate for decades.

We met at his office.

When I showed him the letter, he immediately recognized Rebecca's handwriting.

"She gave you this?""

"She left it before she died.""

Harold read the entire letter.

Then he removed his glasses.

"I was wondering when someone would come asking about the trust.""

I leaned forward.

"Why?""

"Because someone contacted my office several months ago asking whether Ethan's guardianship arrangements could be changed.""

"Who?""

He opened a file.

"Vanessa Carter.""

My stomach tightened.

"What did she want?""

"She asked whether a stepmother could become a co-guardian and whether the proposed guardian could have access to certain financial records.""

"Did she mention Ryan Mitchell?""

Harold nodded.

"She did.""

I gripped the edge of the chair.

"What did you tell her?""

"That she had no authority to make those changes without the required legal process and the consent of the appropriate parties.""

I leaned back.

"Did she ask about Ethan's inheritance?""

Harold looked directly at me.

"Yes.""

I felt my blood run cold.

"How much is in the trust?""

He opened another folder.

"The current estimated value, including the investment portfolio and property interests, is approximately six million dollars.""

I stared at him.

Six million.

I had never known the exact amount.

Rebecca had always told me Ethan would be financially secure.

I had assumed she meant his education and a comfortable future.

Harold continued.

"However, the money cannot simply be withdrawn. It is protected by specific conditions. Ethan is the beneficiary, and you remain his primary guardian under the existing arrangements.""

I rubbed my forehead.

"Why would Ryan want to become his guardian?""

Harold closed the folder.

"That is something I cannot answer.""

Then he paused.

"But I can tell you something else.""

"What?""

"Richard Mitchell was investigated years ago for attempting to obtain unauthorized access to a family trust. He was never convicted, but the incident caused a permanent breakdown in his relationship with Rebecca's father.""

I stared at him.

"Is Ryan his son?""

Harold nodded.

"Yes.""

Everything suddenly became much clearer.

Ryan hadn't entered my life by accident.

Vanessa hadn't merely fallen into an affair.

Someone had been asking questions about Ethan's inheritance.

And my wife had been helping him.

Harold placed a copy of the trust documents on the table.

"Mr. Carter, I strongly recommend that you protect the original records and notify the appropriate authorities about the forged application.""

I nodded.

"I will.""

Then he said something that made me sit completely still.

"There's one more issue.""

"What?""

"Someone has already submitted a request to review Ethan's beneficiary status.""

I looked at him.

"Who submitted it?""

Harold turned the page.

May you like

The name at the bottom was not Vanessa's.

It was Ryan Mitchell's.
