Chapter 3: The Stranger Knew Something About My Son
I didn't sleep that night.
Vanessa spent the evening in our bedroom, while I remained downstairs on the sofa.
She tried speaking to me several times.
Each time, I refused to argue.
I had already heard enough excuses.
At around eleven, I received another message from Ryan.
*Ryan:* Please don't make any decisions until you've heard my side.
I stared at the screen.
Then I typed:
*Daniel:* You have five minutes. Call me.
My phone rang almost immediately.
I answered.
"Talk.""
Ryan sounded nervous.
"Mr. Carter, I know you're angry.""
"You're wasting time.""
"I didn't mean for you to find out like this.""
"Like what? By watching you kiss my wife in my living room?""
There was silence.
Then he said, "I know how it looked.""
I laughed without humor.
"How it looked? You were kissing her. What else was I supposed to think?""
"I understand.""
"Do you?""
"Yes.""
"Then tell me why you were in my house.""
Ryan exhaled.
"Vanessa and I have known each other for years. We were together before she met you.""
I leaned forward.
"Together how?""
"We were in a relationship.""
"An affair?""
"No. A serious relationship.""
I rubbed my forehead.
"How long?""
"Almost four years.""
The room seemed to tilt.
Four years.
I had known Vanessa for three.
I looked at the staircase.
"Are you telling me you were still involved with her when she married me?""
He hesitated.
"Yes.""
My jaw tightened.
"Then why did you let her marry me?""
"I didn't know she was going to.""
"That's not an answer.""
"I found out after the wedding.""
"And you continued seeing her?""
"Yes.""
I closed my eyes.
For several seconds, I couldn't speak.
Then I asked, "Does my son know you?""
Ryan didn't answer immediately.
"Mr. Carter, that's the part we need to discuss.""
My entire body stiffened.
"What does that mean?""
"I've met Ethan before.""
"When?""
"Several times.""
I stood up.
"Where?""
"At your house.""
I looked toward the living room.
The same living room where I had watched him embrace my wife.
"You've been around my son?""
"Yes.""
"Without my knowledge?""
"Yes.""
I gripped the edge of the table.
"What have you been telling him?""
"Nothing inappropriate.""
"Then why does he know you?""
Ryan hesitated again.
"Because Vanessa introduced me as someone important to her.""
I felt my stomach turn.
"Did she tell him you were her boyfriend?""
"No.""
"Did she tell him you were going to replace me?""
"Not exactly.""
I nearly shouted.
"What does 'not exactly' mean?""
Ryan lowered his voice.
"She told him that one day, things might change.""
I ended the call.
I couldn't listen anymore.
I walked into the kitchen and poured myself a glass of water.
My hand was trembling.
I had spent years trying to protect Ethan from the pain of losing his mother.
Now another adult had entered his life and made him question whether he belonged in his own family.
I went upstairs.
Vanessa was lying in bed, staring at her phone.
When she saw me, she quickly turned it face down.
"Who were you talking to?"" I asked.
She sat up.
"Nobody.""
"Ryan.""
Her expression hardened.
"Why are you speaking to him?""
"Because apparently he's been in my house for years.""
She looked away.
I stepped closer.
"How many times has he met Ethan?""
Vanessa sighed.
"Daniel, don't turn this into something involving the child.""
"He's already involved! He watched you kiss another man today!""
She lowered her voice.
"Keep your voice down.""
I stared at her.
"You should have thought about that before bringing him here.""
She got out of bed and walked toward the dresser.
"Ryan and I have history. I never expected things to become so complicated.""
"Then why did you marry me?""
She stopped.
I waited.
She turned around.
"Because I loved you.""
"Past tense?""
She looked irritated.
"You're twisting my words.""
"Did you marry me while you were still sleeping with him?""
She didn't answer.
I nodded slowly.
"That's what I thought.""
She sat on the edge of the bed.
"Daniel, listen. Ryan was a part of my past. You gave me something he couldn't.""
"What?""
"Security.""
The word landed between us.
I stared at her.
"Security?""
She quickly corrected herself.
"Love. Stability. A family.""
I laughed.
"At least one of those things was honest.""
She stood abruptly.
"Don't act like you're some perfect husband. You're always gone. You think paying the bills means you can ignore everything else?""
I didn't respond.
She continued.
"I spent months alone in this enormous house.""
"You had a choice. You could have talked to me.""
"I did!""
"When?""
"Every time you left!""
"Vanessa, I asked you what was wrong dozens of times. You told me everything was fine.""
She crossed her arms.
"Well, it wasn't.""
I looked at her.
"Then why didn't you leave?""
She looked around the bedroom.
At the expensive furniture.
At the jewelry box on the dresser.
At the walk-in closet filled with clothes I had helped her choose.
Then she said something that made me realize just how little I knew about the woman sleeping beside me.
"Because I didn't want to start over.""
I nodded.
"Neither did I.""
Then I walked out.
The following morning, I took Ethan to school myself.
He barely touched his breakfast.
He kept looking toward the kitchen whenever Vanessa moved.
At one point, she approached him with a plate of pancakes.
"Sweetheart, I made your favorite.""
Ethan didn't look up.
"I'm not hungry.""
Vanessa smiled awkwardly.
"Come on. You need to eat.""
He pushed the plate away.
"I don't want it.""
Her smile disappeared.
"Don't be difficult.""
I immediately stepped between them.
"That's enough.""
Vanessa looked at me.
"I was only trying to feed him.""
"I'll take care of breakfast.""
Ethan quietly picked up his backpack.
As we left, he held my hand tighter than usual.
In the car, I turned off the radio.
"Would you like to spend a few days with Aunt Laura?""
He looked at me.
"Why?""
"Just to have some fun. Maybe go to the aquarium.""
He considered it.
"Will you come too?""
"Of course.""
He nodded.
Then he asked, "Will Vanessa come?""
I looked at him through the rearview mirror.
"Would you like her to?""
He shook his head.
I didn't ask him to explain.
After dropping Ethan off at school, I drove to my office.
Mark noticed immediately that something was wrong.
He closed the conference room door behind us.
"Sir, are you feeling okay?""
"No.""
"Is it the property deal?""
I shook my head.
"It's my family.""
He sat down.
"Do you need anything?""
"Yes. I need you to help me find a reputable family attorney.""
He nodded.
"Of course.""
"And Mark?""
"Yes, sir?""
"Keep this confidential.""
"Understood.""
I spent the next hour reviewing the security footage from the previous weeks.
What I found was worse than I expected.
The same black Mercedes had appeared outside my house on at least nine separate occasions.
Sometimes it stayed for twenty minutes.
Sometimes it remained for several hours.
On one recording, Vanessa and Ryan were sitting at the dining table.
On another, they were walking through the backyard.
But the most disturbing footage was dated three weeks earlier.
Ethan was sitting on the living room rug, building a model airplane.
Ryan was standing near the fireplace.
Vanessa walked over to him.
They kissed.
Ethan looked up.
Instead of being surprised, he simply lowered his head and continued building the airplane.
It was as if he had seen it before.
My chest tightened.
Then I heard Ryan say something.
"He's getting used to me.""
Vanessa laughed.
"He's a good boy. He just needs time.""
Ryan leaned closer.
"And Daniel?""
Vanessa shrugged.
"Daniel will deal with it when the time comes.""
I paused the recording.
When the time comes?
I downloaded the footage and saved a copy.
Then I noticed another file.
It was a recording from the hallway camera, dated two days earlier.
Vanessa was speaking to someone on the phone.
I increased the volume.
"Yes, Mom. I know.""
A pause.
"No, he hasn't found out.""
Another pause.
"I told you, I have a plan.""
My stomach tightened.
She continued.
"Once everything is finalized, Daniel won't have a choice.""
I leaned toward the screen.
"What exactly are you planning?"" I whispered.
Then she said something that made my blood run cold.
"Ryan and I have already discussed what will happen to Ethan.""
I stopped the footage.
I replayed it.
Again.
And again.
What will happen to Ethan?
I immediately called Vanessa.
She answered after two rings.
"Hello, sweetheart.""
Her voice sounded cheerful.
"Where are you?""
"At home. Why?""
"Who were you talking to two days ago?""
Silence.
"What?""
"Your mother.""
She laughed nervously.
"Daniel, I talk to my mother every day.""
"What were you planning with Ryan?""
Her breathing changed.
"I don't know what you're talking about.""
"I heard you say that once everything was finalized, I wouldn't have a choice.""
She was silent.
Then she said, "You went through my private conversations?""
"I reviewed my own security cameras.""
"That's an invasion of privacy!""
I almost laughed.
"You're worried about privacy now?""
"Daniel, you're becoming paranoid.""
I ended the call.
That afternoon, I met with a family attorney named Patricia Wilson.
She listened carefully as I explained what had happened.
I showed her the footage.
She watched without interrupting.
When it ended, she removed her glasses.
"Mr. Carter, I want you to be careful about how you handle this.""
"I don't intend to fight with her.""
"Good. Your priority should be your son's safety and emotional well-being.""
"I agree.""
"Preserve the recordings. Don't delete messages. Don't threaten anyone. And don't make decisions about custody or the house without understanding your legal position.""
I nodded.
Then I showed her the clip of Vanessa mentioning Ethan.
Her expression became serious.
"Has your wife ever discussed changing your son's living arrangements?""
"Not with me.""
"Has she ever asked you to sign documents concerning guardianship, adoption, or custody?""
I frowned.
"Actually, yes.""
Patricia looked up.
"When?""
"About two months ago. She said it was a routine family document related to school emergencies.""
"Did you sign it?""
"No. I asked to read it first, and she said she would bring it back.""
Patricia leaned forward.
"Do you remember what it was called?""
I shook my head.
"No.""
"Find out. And don't sign anything she gives you until I've reviewed it.""
I nodded.
Then I remembered something.
"There's one more thing. Ryan told me he had met Ethan several times and that Vanessa had introduced him as someone important.""
Patricia made a note.
"That could be relevant. But we need facts, not assumptions.""
Before I left, she gave me her card.
"Mr. Carter, one more question. Is Ethan comfortable around your wife?""
I thought about his frightened expression.
His hands covering his mouth.
His question about whether I would still make Vanessa his mommy.
"No," I answered.
"I don't think he is.""
She nodded.
"Then listen to him. Children often communicate distress in ways adults overlook.""
At five o'clock, I picked Ethan up from school.
He ran toward me, holding a folded piece of paper.
"Daddy!""
I smiled for the first time that day.
"What's that?""
He handed me the paper.
It was a drawing.
There were three people standing outside a house.
One was a little boy.
One was a tall man holding the boy's hand.
The third was a woman standing far away.
I looked at it.
"Is this us?""
Ethan nodded.
"That's me. That's you. And that's Vanessa.""
I pointed toward the woman.
"Why is she standing over there?""
Ethan looked down.
"Because she doesn't live with us anymore.""
I felt a lump form in my throat.
"Is that what you want?""
He nodded.
Then he whispered, "Can we go somewhere else?""
I crouched in front of him.
"Somewhere else?""
"Just you and me.""
I hugged him.
"We'll figure everything out together.""
As I helped him into the car, he suddenly grabbed my sleeve.
"Daddy?""
"Yes, buddy?""
"There's something I didn't tell you.""
I turned toward him.
"What is it?""
He looked toward the school entrance to make sure nobody was listening.
Then he reached into his backpack and pulled out a small folded envelope.
"I found this in Vanessa's room.""
I took it carefully.
"What's inside?""
"I don't know. But she told Ryan that you must never see it.""
My fingers went cold.
I opened the envelope.
Inside was a photocopy of a document.
At the top were the words:
*APPLICATION FOR LEGAL GUARDIANSHIP AND CHANGE OF PRIMARY RESIDENCE.*
My eyes moved down the page.
The applicant's name was Vanessa Carter.
The proposed additional guardian was Ryan Mitchell.
And the child named in the application was my son.
Ethan Carter.
But it was the final paragraph that made my heart stop.
The document claimed that I had voluntarily agreed to transfer certain parental responsibilities to Vanessa and Ryan.
My signature appeared at the bottom.
I stared at it.
It looked exactly like mine.
Except I had never signed that document.
I looked at Ethan.
"Where did you find this?""
He whispered, "Under her bed.""
I turned the page over.
There was a handwritten note attached to the back.
It contained only one sentence.
*Once Daniel signs the remaining papers, we can finally take Ethan home.*
I read it twice.
Then a third time.
Take Ethan home?
My son was already home.
He was sitting right beside me.
I looked at the document again and noticed something else.
The date.
It was scheduled to be submitted the following Monday.
Three days away.
I immediately started the engine.
But before I could pull away, my phone rang.
It was Vanessa.
I answered without saying a word.
Her voice was no longer cheerful.
"Daniel, where are you?""
"With my son.""
"Bring him home immediately.""
I glanced at the document.
"Why?""
She took a sharp breath.
"Because Ryan is coming over, and we need to discuss something as a family.""
I tightened my grip on the steering wheel.
"Ryan is coming to my house?""
"Yes.""
"Why?""
Her next words made my blood run cold.
"Because it's time Ethan learned who his real father is.""
I looked at my little boy.
He was staring at me, trembling.
Then I looked at the document again.
Ryan Mitchell's name was printed beside the words proposed legal guardian.
I ended the call.
For the first time since my first wife's death, I felt the kind of fear that makes a father forget everything except protecting his child.
May you like
And as I drove toward my sister's house, one terrible question kept repeating in my mind.
*Why was another man trying to become my son's father—and what exactly had Vanessa promised him?*
