Chapter 7: The Night Daniel Vanished

The house felt smaller after Maya said those words.

Like the walls themselves were closing in.

I looked at my daughter.

“Tell me.””

She shook her head.

“I don’t know everything.””

“Then tell me what you know.””

Her eyes filled with tears.

“I saw Dad that night.””

The room went silent.

I stared at her.

“What?””

Maya looked down.

“The night everyone thought he left.””

My heart started racing.

“Maya, you told me you were asleep.””

“I was.””

She wiped her cheek.

“But I woke up.””

A memory flashed through my mind.

That night.

The last night Daniel was home.

The argument.

The silence afterward.

The next morning, his closet was half empty.

A note on the counter.

Three words.

*I’m sorry, Renee.*

I thought he left us.

I thought he chose a new life.

But my daughter knew something I didn’t.

“What did you see?””

Maya sat down.

“Dad was in the hallway.””

“Was he alone?””

She shook her head.

“No.””

My chest tightened.

“Who was with him?””

She looked at Carol.

And Carol looked away.

“I didn’t see her face,” Maya whispered.

“But I heard her.””

“Her?””

“Yes.””

“What did she say?””

Maya closed her eyes.

“She said, ‘You don’t have much time.’”

The room went cold.

“Then what?””

“Dad saw me.””

I stopped.

“He saw you?””

She nodded.

“He came to my room.””

Her voice became smaller.

“He told me to pretend I was asleep.””

I covered my mouth.

“Why didn’t you tell me?””

“Because he made me promise.””

“Why?””

Maya looked at me.

“Because he said if you knew, they would use me to get to you.””

The pain of that sentence was unbearable.

My daughter had been carrying this alone for two years.

Two years.

I sat beside her.

“You should have told me.””

“I know.””

“No, Maya.””

I held her hand.

“You should never have had to carry something like this.””

She cried quietly.

Then Carol spoke.

“There’s something else.””

I looked up.

“What?””

She hesitated.

“The woman Maya heard.””

My stomach dropped.

“You know who it was?””

Carol nodded.

“Yes.””

“Who?””

Carol’s eyes moved toward the floor.

Then she whispered:

“Me.””

Nobody moved.

The confession landed harder than anything else.

Maya stared at her.

“You?””

Carol nodded.

“I was there.””

“Why?””

“Because Daniel called me.””

“Why?””

“Because he knew he was being followed.””

I stood.

“So you were helping him.””

“Yes.””

“Then why did you hide?””

Her eyes filled with regret.

“Because after Daniel disappeared, they threatened my family.””

I froze.

“You have family?””

“My granddaughter.””

Her voice broke.

“They knew where she went to school.””

I looked away.

Everything was becoming a web.

Every person had secrets.

Every secret had a reason.

But the damage remained.

“You could have told me something.””

“I wanted to.””

“But you didn’t.””

“No.””

She looked at Maya.

“Because Daniel made me promise.””

I shook my head.

“Everyone keeps using Daniel’s promises as an excuse.””

Victor suddenly laughed.

Everyone turned.

“You still defend him.””

Carol looked at him.

“You’re the reason he’s gone.””

Victor’s face darkened.

“Careful.””

“No.””

Carol stood.

“I’m done being afraid of you.””

For a moment, nobody spoke.

Then Victor stepped toward her.

I moved between them.

“Don’t.””

Victor looked at me.

“You have no idea what you’re involved in.””

“Maybe.””

I held the folder tighter.

“But I know what kind of person walks into a mother’s house and threatens her child.””

His jaw tightened.

Then his phone rang.

He looked at the screen.

His expression changed.

Concern.

Real concern.

“What?””

He listened.

Then his face went pale.

“What do you mean he’s awake?””

My heart stopped.

Victor looked at me.

And whispered:

“Daniel.””

The world tilted.

“What did you say?””

He ended the call.

Nobody spoke.

Then Victor walked backward.

“This isn’t over.””

He turned and left.

I watched the SUV disappear.

Then I looked at Maya.

“Your father is alive?””

She didn’t answer.

Because she was crying.

Not from fear.

From hope.

A hope she had tried to bury for two years.

My phone buzzed.

A message.

From the same unknown number.

This time, it included a photo.

A hospital room.

A man lying in a bed.

Daniel.

May you like

Underneath the picture were six words.

*Come alone if you want answers.*
