Chapter 5: The Truth About Daniel
The man stopped at the edge of our porch.
He didn’t knock.
He didn’t need to.
He knew we were there.
His eyes moved from me to Maya.
Then to Carol.
“Well,” he said.
“This is a bigger reunion than I expected.””
I stepped in front of my daughter.
“Who are you?””
The man smiled.
“My name is Victor Hale.””
I didn’t recognize the name.
But Maya did.
Her fingers tightened around my arm.
“You.””
Victor looked at her.
“You shouldn’t have opened that laptop.””
My blood ran cold.
“You knew?””
“Of course.””
I stared at him.
“You’ve been watching us?””
Victor ignored me.
“Maya, give me the folder.””
“No.””
His smile disappeared.
“You really are your father’s daughter.””
That sentence hit me.
“What does that mean?””
Victor looked at me.
“It means Daniel taught her exactly what he knew.””
“What?””
“Always keep a copy.””
Maya stepped forward.
“My father wasn’t like you.””
Victor laughed.
“You don’t know your father.””
Carol moved beside us.
“Leave them alone.””
Victor looked at her.
“You had your chance, Carol.””
She stared at him.
“I should have stopped him sooner.””
“Yes.””
His voice became colder.
“You should have.””
I looked between them.
“Someone explain what is happening.””
Victor sighed.
“Your husband stole from the wrong people.””
“I knew about the money.””
“No,” Victor said.
“You knew about the surface.””
He looked at Maya.
“She found the deeper records.””
My daughter looked down.
“What records?””
Victor smiled.
“The ones proving your father wasn’t just moving money.””
Silence.
“What was he doing?”” I asked.
Victor looked at me.
“He was building a case against us.””
I blinked.
“What?””
Carol spoke quietly.
“Daniel wasn’t stealing.””
She looked at Maya.
“He was collecting evidence.””
My mind struggled to catch up.
“Then why did he leave?””
No one answered.
Finally, Carol said:
“Because he was trying to keep you safe.””
I laughed once.
A painful sound.
“Safe?””
I looked at the man who abandoned us.
The empty birthdays.
The missed calls.
The years of disappointment.
“That doesn’t make sense.””
Maya whispered:
“Mom…”
I turned to her.
“What?””
She looked terrified.
“There’s something else.””
My heart sank.
“What else?””
She reached into her backpack.
Pulled out an envelope.
And handed it to me.
“I found this hidden in Dad’s laptop case.””
My hands shook as I opened it.
Inside was a handwritten letter.
My name was on the front.
Not Maya’s.
Mine.
The handwriting was Daniel’s.
I read the first line.
*Renee, if you are reading this, it means I failed to protect you from the truth.*
I stopped breathing.
The driveway went silent.
Victor looked at the letter.
And for the first time…
he looked afraid.
Because he knew what was inside.
I kept reading.
And the next sentence changed everything I thought I knew about my divorce.
*The day I left you was the day I discovered someone inside our own home was helping them.*
My eyes lifted slowly.
Toward the person standing beside me.
Mrs. Patterson.
May you like
And she was crying.
*To be continued...*
