Chapter 8: The Son Who Was Taken Away
I couldn’t move.
The letter slipped from my fingers and landed on the floor.
For a moment, nobody spoke.
Not Officer Daniels.
Not Camila.
Not even Mateo.
Because everyone in that room understood the same thing.
The truth we had been searching for was no longer a mystery.
It was a wound.
And it had my son’s name written all over it.
I looked at Mateo.
He was staring at the floor.
Not angry.
Not crying.
Just silent.
That scared me more.
“Mateo…”
He slowly looked up.
“Is it true?””
My throat tightened.
“I don’t know.””
“But Dad said…”
“I know what he said.””
He looked at the letter.
“Then maybe I’m not supposed to be here.””
The pain in his voice broke something inside me.
I immediately moved toward him.
“No.””
He looked away.
“Mom—”
“No.””
I held his face gently.
“Never say that again.””
“But if there was another baby…”
“You.””
I stopped him.
“You are not a replacement.””
His eyes filled with tears.
“You don’t understand.””
“I do.””
“No, you don’t.””
His voice cracked.
“You spent my whole life telling me Dad left because he didn’t want to be a father.””
I froze.
“I know.””
“And now maybe he didn’t leave.””
Mateo swallowed.
“Maybe he was looking for someone else.””
The words hurt because I knew where they came from.
Not anger.
Fear.
Fear that he was somehow less loved.
I sat beside him.
“Mateo, look at me.””
He did.
“Your father’s choices are not a measurement of your worth.””
“But—”
“No.””
I squeezed his hand.
“Whatever happened sixteen years ago, one thing has never changed.””
“What?””
“You are my son.””
He looked at me.
“I chose you every single day.””
A tear rolled down his cheek.
“I love you.””
“I love you too.””
Behind us, Officer Daniels cleared his throat.
“We need to find Daniel.””
I looked at him.
“Why?””
“Because if what he wrote is true, he may know where Lucas is.””
I looked at the letter.
“And my mother?””
The officer nodded.
“She knows something.””
Camila quietly said:
“She always knew.””
I turned toward her.
“What do you mean?””
Camila looked exhausted.
“She wasn’t surprised when Daniel disappeared.””
My stomach tightened.
“What did she do?””
“I don’t know.””
“You keep saying that.””
Camila looked at me.
“Because I was afraid.””
I stared at her.
“Afraid of what?””
“My mother.””
The honesty in her voice made me pause.
Camila had always been the brave one.
The person who confronted everyone.
The person who spoke up.
But now she looked terrified.
“What happened after Daniel disappeared?””
She took a deep breath.
“The next morning, Mom called me.””
“What did she say?””
“She told me to forget what I saw.””
“And you did?””
Camila closed her eyes.
“No.””
She looked at me.
“I tried.””
A silence followed.
Then she continued.
“Two weeks later, I saw Mom at a private clinic.””
My heart started racing.
“A clinic?””
“Yes.””
“What was she doing there?””
“I don’t know.””
“You followed her?””
Camila nodded.
“I was worried.””
“And?””
“She met with a doctor.””
“What doctor?””
“I don’t remember his name.””
She paused.
“But I remember what she carried.””
“What?””
“A baby blanket.””
My blood ran cold.
“Camila…”
“I know.””
“No.””
I stood.
“No, because if you knew this…”
“I know.””
“Then why didn’t you tell me?””
Her eyes filled with tears.
“Because I was scared she would hurt you.””
The room became quiet.
Officer Daniels looked at me.
“Mrs. Martinez, we need to talk to your mother immediately.””
I nodded.
“Yes.””
But before we could leave, Mateo spoke.
“Mom.””
I turned.
“What?””
He looked nervous.
“What if Lucas is alive?””
Nobody answered.
Because that was the question nobody wanted to say out loud.
We found my parents at their house.
Or at least where their house had been.
Because by the time we arrived, the front door was unlocked.
The lights were on.
But nobody was there.
Officer Daniels entered first.
“Stay behind me.””
I followed anyway.
I was done being protected from the truth.
The house looked normal.
Too normal.
A clean kitchen.
Family photos.
A living room filled with memories.
Except now every picture looked different.
Every smile looked fake.
I saw a framed photo of my mother holding Mateo as a baby.
I picked it up.
For sixteen years, I thought that picture represented love.
Now I wondered what it really represented.
Camila walked toward the hallway.
“Elena.””
I followed her.
She stood in front of my mother’s office.
The door was open.
Inside, drawers were pulled out.
Papers were scattered everywhere.
Someone had searched the room.
Officer Daniels examined the area.
“Someone was here recently.””
I walked inside.
On the desk was a notebook.
I opened it.
Names.
Dates.
Numbers.
And one name repeated over and over.
Lucas.
My hands shook.
I turned the page.
There were notes.
*Placement confirmed.*
*No contact.*
*Elena cannot know.*
My stomach dropped.
“Officer.””
He came closer.
He read the page.
His expression changed.
“What?””
“This isn’t just hiding information.””
He looked around the room.
“This looks like a long-term operation.””
I felt sick.
My mother hadn’t made one bad decision.
She had built a lie.
For sixteen years.
A noise came from upstairs.
Everyone froze.
Officer Daniels raised his hand.
“Stay here.””
He walked toward the stairs.
A few seconds passed.
Then:
“Clear.””
He came back holding something.
A small box.
“This was hidden under the floorboard.””
My heart started pounding.
He opened it.
Inside were documents.
Photos.
And a hospital bracelet.
He lifted it carefully.
I stepped closer.
The name was clear.
*Lucas Martinez.*
But underneath the name was another detail.
A birth date.
The same as Mateo’s.
Camila whispered:
“Oh my God.””
I looked through the photos.
There were dozens.
A baby.
A child.
Different ages.
Different homes.
Someone had been watching him.
Tracking him.
But there was one photo that made my entire body freeze.
A teenage boy.
Sixteen years old.
Standing outside a school.
Same age as Mateo.
Same dark hair.
Same eyes.
Same smile.
On the back was a handwritten note.
*He still doesn’t know.*
I dropped the picture.
Because suddenly I understood.
Lucas wasn’t missing.
He wasn’t dead.
He had been alive this entire time.
And he was the same age as my son.
Officer Daniels picked up the photo.
“Mrs. Martinez…”
I couldn’t speak.
Then my phone rang.
Unknown number.
Everyone looked at me.
I answered.
“Hello?””
A boy’s voice came through.
Young.
Shaking.
“Is this Elena Martinez?””
My heart stopped.
“Yes.””
A pause.
Then:
“My name is Lucas.””
I couldn’t breathe.
The room disappeared.
“Where are you?””
Silence.
Then he whispered:
“I’ve been trying to find you for years.””
My eyes filled with tears.
“Lucas…”
“I need you to listen carefully.””
His voice trembled.
“Because your mother is coming for me.””
I stood frozen.
“What?””
“She knows I contacted you.””
“How?””
Another pause.
Then he said:
“Because I found the same thing Mateo found.””
I looked at Mateo.
He was staring at me.
“What thing?””
Lucas’s voice became barely audible.
“The truth about what happened the night we were born.””
The call suddenly filled with static.
“Lucas?””
No answer.
Then one final sound.
A door opening.
A woman’s voice in the background.
My blood turned cold.
Because I recognized it.
My mother.
“Who are you talking to?””
The call disconnected.
I stared at my phone.
And for the first time in sixteen years…
May you like
I realized I had not lost one child.
I had been kept away from two.
