Chapter 9: The Family Lie That Lasted Sixteen Years
I called back immediately.
Once.
Twice.
Ten times.
Nothing.
Every call went unanswered.
I stared at the phone screen, watching Lucas’s number sit there like a doorway that had suddenly closed.
“He’s gone.””
The words escaped my mouth before I realized I had spoken them.
Mateo looked at me.
“Mom…”
I looked at my son.
Both of my sons.
One standing in front of me.
One somewhere out there.
Both victims of the same lie.
Officer Daniels moved closer.
“We need to act quickly.””
I nodded.
“What can we do?””
“We trace the number. We check the last known location.””
“Can you find him?””
“We’ll try.””
Try.
That word terrified me.
Because I had spent sixteen years not knowing Lucas existed.
And now I knew.
Now I knew there was a boy out there who had spent his entire life wondering why he had been taken away.
A boy who had somehow found me.
A boy my mother was trying to silence.
I looked around the room.
The evidence was everywhere.
The documents.
The photos.
The bracelet.
The proof of a life stolen.
Camila stood quietly near the desk.
I looked at her.
“How much did you know?””
She looked down.
“Not enough.””
“That’s not an answer.””
She closed her eyes.
“I knew there was another baby.””
My heart tightened.
“You knew?””
“I didn’t know it was Lucas.””
“But you knew.””
“Yes.””
I stepped back.
For years, I thought my family’s biggest betrayal was my mother.
Now I wasn’t sure anymore.
“How could you keep that from me?””
Camila started crying.
“Because every time I tried to tell you, Mom reminded me what happened to Daniel.””
I froze.
“What does that mean?””
She looked at me.
“She said if I opened my mouth, I would destroy the family.””
I laughed bitterly.
“The family.””
I looked around the room.
“This?””
I pointed at the documents.
“This was never a family.””
Camila wiped her tears.
“I was wrong.””
“Yes.””
My voice was quiet.
“But you were also afraid.””
She nodded.
“I was.””
That answer didn’t fix anything.
But it was the first honest thing she had said to me in years.
Officer Daniels suddenly looked up from his phone.
“We have a location.””
Everyone turned.
“Lucas?””
He nodded.
“The number last connected near an apartment complex about twenty minutes away.””
I grabbed my purse.
“I’m coming.””
“Mrs. Martinez—”
“No.””
I looked at him.
“I spent sixteen years waiting for answers.””
My voice shook.
“I’m not waiting anymore.””
The apartment building was old.
The kind of place where the paint peeled from the walls and the hallway lights flickered.
I walked behind Officer Daniels, my heart pounding.
Every step felt impossible.
What would I say?
What do you say to a child you should have known his entire life?
How do you apologize for something you never chose?
How do you explain that the people who were supposed to protect him stole his identity?
We reached the third floor.
Apartment 3B.
Officer Daniels knocked.
No answer.
He knocked again.
“Police.””
Silence.
Then a voice.
“Who is it?””
My breath caught.
That voice.
Young.
Scared.
Lucas.
I stepped forward.
“Lucas?””
Silence.
“How do you know my name?””
My eyes filled.
“Because I’m your mother.””
Nothing.
No sound.
No movement.
Then the door opened slightly.
A teenage boy looked out.
And I knew.
Not because someone told me.
Not because of a photograph.
Because I saw myself.
His eyes.
His expression.
The same way he looked when he was afraid but trying to hide it.
Behind him, I saw a small apartment.
A backpack.
School books.
A life.
A life without me.
“Lucas.””
He stared at me.
“I thought you were never going to come.””
Those words broke me.
I covered my mouth.
“I’m sorry.””
He looked confused.
“For what?””
For everything.
The words were in my head.
But they couldn’t come out.
“I should have found you.””
Lucas looked away.
“You didn’t know.””
That hurt more.
Because he wasn’t angry.
He was accepting.
Like he had spent his whole life making excuses for people who abandoned him.
“Who raised you?””
His face changed.
A small fear appeared.
“Why?””
“Lucas.””
He stepped back.
“I don’t want to talk about him.””
“Him?””
He looked at me.
“The man who raised me.””
My heart tightened.
“Who is he?””
Lucas hesitated.
Then whispered:
“Your father.””
Everything stopped.
“Ernesto?””
He nodded.
I felt sick.
“My father raised you?””
“Yes.””
“Why?””
Lucas looked down.
“Because he told me my real mother didn’t want me.””
My knees almost gave out.
“No.””
“He said you chose Mateo.””
“No.””
“He said you gave me away.””
I stepped closer.
“Lucas, that is not true.””
He looked at me.
“How do I know?””
I had no answer.
Because he had every right to doubt me.
A shadow moved behind him.
I looked past his shoulder.
There was another person inside.
A man.
Older.
Watching.
My heart stopped.
“Daniel?””
The man stepped forward.
Older.
Tired.
But alive.
My entire body froze.
Eleven years.
Eleven years of grief.
Eleven years of anger.
Eleven years of believing he abandoned us.
And there he was.
“Hello, Elena.””
I couldn’t speak.
Then anger replaced everything.
“You were alive.””
Daniel looked down.
“Yes.””
“You were alive.””
“I know.””
“You let me think you were dead.””
His eyes filled with pain.
“I was trying to protect you.””
I laughed.
A broken laugh.
“Protect me?””
I stepped closer.
“You let me raise Mateo alone.””
“I know.””
“You let him believe his father didn’t want him.””
“I know.””
“You let me suffer.””
His face tightened.
“I know.””
“Then why?””
Daniel looked at Lucas.
Then back at me.
“Because your parents had something on me.””
“What?””
He took a deep breath.
“The night Mateo was born…”
He stopped.
I waited.
“The baby records were switched.””
I felt numb.
“Why?””
“Because your father made a deal.””
“With who?””
Daniel’s expression changed.
“With a doctor.””
I stared.
“Why would he do that?””
“Because Lucas was born first.””
I looked at Lucas.
“And Mateo?””
Daniel shook his head.
“Mateo was the second baby.””
My heart pounded.
“What are you saying?””
Daniel stepped closer.
“Your mother gave birth to twins.””
Silence.
Two children.
One mother.
One lie.
“But why separate them?””
Daniel looked at me.
“Because one of them was worth more.””
I felt sick.
“What does that mean?””
He looked toward Lucas.
“Your father discovered that Lucas had a rare blood type that matched someone important.””
I frowned.
“Who?””
Daniel didn’t answer.
Because he didn’t need to.
The fear on his face told me enough.
“Someone powerful.””
I stared.
“And they took him?””
Daniel nodded.
“Your parents arranged everything.””
My hands shook.
“Why keep Mateo?””
Daniel looked at me.
“Because they needed you to believe the family was still normal.””
A horrible silence followed.
Then my phone rang.
Unknown number.
I answered.
Nobody spoke.
Then my mother’s voice came through.
“I told you to stop.””
I froze.
“How did you get this number?””
She ignored me.
“You found him.””
I looked at Lucas.
My mother knew.
“You tried to kill my son.””
“No.””
Her voice was cold.
“I tried to fix what your husband ruined.””
My anger exploded.
“You stole my child.””
Silence.
Then she whispered:
“You still don’t understand.””
I tightened my grip on the phone.
“Understand what?””
Her answer came softly.
“Lucas was never the secret.””
I stopped breathing.
“Then what was?””
A pause.
Then:
“Ask Daniel why Mateo’s birth certificate has a different father’s name.””
The call ended.
I slowly lowered the phone.
Everyone stared at me.
Mateo wasn’t here.
He was back at the hospital.
Alone.
And suddenly I realized something terrifying.
The truth about Lucas was only the beginning.
May you like
The biggest secret…
Was still my son.
