Chapter 4: The Man Who Was Supposed To Be Dead
I stared at my phone long after the call ended.
The screen went dark.
But the voice stayed.
Daniel.
Eleven years of silence.
Eleven years of questions.
Eleven years of telling myself that I had accepted what happened.
I hadn’t.
I had simply buried the pain deep enough that I could function.
Every birthday Mateo had without his father.
Every school event where there was an empty chair.
Every night my son asked why other kids had two parents and he only had one.
I had carried all of that.
And now the man who caused it had called me like he had only been gone for a day.
“You’re sure that was him?””
Camila’s voice broke through my thoughts.
I looked at her.
“Yes.””
She sat back slowly.
“But he’s dead.””
I laughed quietly.
“Apparently everyone in this family has been lying.””
Officer Daniels watched us carefully.
“Mrs. Martinez, I need to ask you something.””
I looked at him.
“What?””
“Did your husband’s disappearance ever get officially investigated?””
I hesitated.
“Yes.””
“What happened?””
I looked down.
“The police said he left voluntarily.””
Camila shook her head.
“That’s not what happened.””
I looked at her.
“What do you mean?””
She avoided my eyes.
“Daniel didn’t just disappear.””
My stomach tightened.
“What aren’t you telling me?””
She took a breath.
“The night he left… I was there.””
The room became silent.
I stared at my sister.
“You were there?””
She nodded.
“Not when he disappeared. Before.””
“Why didn’t you tell me?””
Her eyes filled with regret.
“Because Mom made me promise.””
My chest tightened.
“Of course she did.””
Camila looked down.
“I was twenty-eight. I was scared. Mom convinced me that she was protecting you.””
“Protecting me from what?””
She didn’t answer.
“Camila.””
She wiped her face.
“From the truth.””
I stepped closer.
“I deserve the truth.””
She nodded.
“You do.””
A nurse walked past the door, and for a moment neither of us spoke.
Then Camila whispered:
“Daniel found out something about Dad’s business.””
My eyebrows pulled together.
“What business?””
My father had owned a small construction company for years.
Nothing glamorous.
Nothing suspicious.
At least that was what I thought.
“Your father wasn’t only doing construction.””
“What else was he doing?””
Camila looked at Officer Daniels.
The officer immediately understood.
“I’ll give you some privacy.””
After he left, Camila lowered her voice.
“He was moving money.””
My face tightened.
“Illegal money?””
“I don’t know.””
“But Daniel knew?””
“Yes.””
“How?””
“He found documents.””
“What documents?””
“Financial records. Payments. Transfers.””
My mind raced.
“And Mom?””
“She knew.””
I closed my eyes.
Of course she knew.
My mother had always been the person who knew everything.
Who controlled everything.
Who always had an explanation.
“What happened after Daniel found out?””
Camila looked at the floor.
“He came to our parents’ house.””
“Why?””
“He wanted to confront Dad.””
“When?””
“The night he disappeared.””
My breathing changed.
“You’re telling me my husband went to my parents’ house and never came home?””
Camila nodded.
“I saw his car.””
“Where?””
“In their driveway.””
A cold feeling moved through me.
“And nobody told me?””
“No.””
“Why?””
Her eyes filled with tears.
“Because when I asked Mom where Daniel was, she told me to forget him.””
I felt anger rising.
“She told you that?””
“She said he abandoned you.””
My hands curled into fists.
“And you believed her?””
“I was young.””
“You were my sister.””
“I know.””
Her voice cracked.
“I know.””
For a moment, I saw the guilt she had been carrying.
But guilt didn’t erase what happened.
“You let me believe my husband left me.””
“I’m sorry.””
“You let Mateo grow up thinking his father didn’t love him.””
Camila covered her face.
“I know.””
“No.””
My voice shook.
“You don’t know.””
I looked away.
“You don’t know what it was like answering a child’s questions about why his father never called.””
The room was quiet.
Then Camila whispered:
“I know because I heard your mother tell Daniel not to fight.””
I turned.
“What?””
“He was alive.””
The words hit me like a physical blow.
“What?””
Camila looked terrified.
“I heard them arguing.””
“When?””
“That night.””
“Where?””
“At Mom and Dad’s house.””
I stepped closer.
“What did they say?””
Camila swallowed.
“Daniel said he was going to tell you everything.””
My heart pounded.
“And Mom?””
“She said he didn’t understand what would happen if he did.””
“What happened next?””
Camila looked away.
“I left.””
“You left?””
“I was scared.””
“You left him there?””
She nodded.
And the pain on her face told me she hated herself for it.
“I thought he would leave after they argued.””
“But he didn’t.””
“No.””
“Why?””
Camila looked at me.
“Because someone took his car.””
I froze.
“What?””
“The next morning, his car was found abandoned.””
My hands went cold.
“And Daniel?””
She shook her head.
“Gone.””
I sat down.
Everything I had built my life on was collapsing.
Daniel hadn’t abandoned me.
He had vanished.
Someone had made him vanish.
My phone suddenly vibrated.
I looked down.
A message.
Unknown number.
My heart stopped.
*YOU SHOULD HAVE LEFT THE PAST ALONE.*
A second message appeared.
*ASK YOUR SISTER WHAT SHE SAW THAT NIGHT.*
I slowly looked at Camila.
She had seen the message.
Her face turned pale.
“What?””
I showed her the phone.
She whispered:
“No.””
“What?””
She looked terrified.
“Elena…”
“What?””
“That number.””
I stared at the screen.
“You know it?””
She nodded.
“It’s the same number that called Mom.””
My blood ran cold.
“About me?””
Camila nodded.
“Yes.””
I stood.
“We need to go.””
“Where?””
“To Mom and Dad’s house.””
Camila grabbed my arm.
“No.””
“Why?””
“Because if they know you heard Daniel…”
She stopped.
“What?””
She looked toward the hallway.
“Then they know their plan failed.””
A strange calm came over me.
A calm I had never felt before.
“No.””
Camila stared at me.
“Elena…”
“They already took enough from me.””
I looked toward the hospital room where Mateo was recovering.
“They almost took my son.””
My voice became steady.
“They don’t get anything else.””
A doctor walked into the hallway.
“Mrs. Martinez?””
I turned.
“Yes?””
“Your son is awake and asking for you.””
I immediately moved.
But before I reached the door, my phone rang again.
Unknown number.
This time, I answered.
“What do you want?””
Silence.
Then a familiar voice.
My mother.
Not angry.
Not afraid.
Calm.
“Elena.””
My stomach tightened.
“Where did you get this number?””
She ignored the question.
“You need to stop asking questions.””
I looked through the hospital window at Mateo.
“Or what?””
Her voice became softer.
“Or you’ll lose another person you love.””
My blood froze.
“Are you threatening me?””
“No.””
A pause.
“I’m warning you.””
I gripped the phone.
“You tried to leave my son to die.””
Her breathing changed.
Only slightly.
But I heard it.
“You don’t understand what you’re involved in.””
“Then explain it.””
Silence.
Then she said:
“Ask Daniel why he really left.””
My heart stopped.
“What?””
“You think he disappeared because of your father?””
Her voice lowered.
“You have no idea what your husband did.””
I felt a chill.
“What did he do?””
My mother didn’t answer.
Instead, she whispered:
“He never told you the truth about Mateo.””
The call ended.
I stood frozen in the hallway.
Mateo.
My son.
My whole world.
I slowly lowered the phone.
Camila looked at me.
“What did she say?””
I looked through the glass.
At my sixteen-year-old son lying in that hospital bed.
And for the first time since the crash…
I felt afraid.
Not because someone wanted my money.
Not because someone wanted to hurt me.
May you like
Because someone had just suggested that my son’s entire life was built on a lie.
And I had no idea what the truth was.
