Chapter 9: The Daughter of the Forgotten Heir

For a few seconds, I forgot how to breathe.

The room disappeared.

The people around me disappeared.

All I could hear were those words repeating in my mind.

*Your real father was Richard Carter's first son.*

I stared at Clara.

Waiting for her to take it back.

Waiting for her to say she was wrong.

She didn't.

Marcus looked at me.

His face was filled with the same confusion I felt.

"Emma...""

I shook my head.

"No.""

My voice came out weak.

"No, that can't be true.""

Clara stepped closer.

"I wish it wasn't.""

I looked at Adrian.

Then Marcus.

Then the documents on the table.

Everything that had seemed impossible suddenly connected in the worst possible way.

The inheritance.

The will.

The baby.

Eleanor's fear.

But there was one question I couldn't ignore.

"My parents.""

My voice trembled.

"What about my parents?""

Clara lowered her eyes.

"They knew.""

The pain of that answer was worse than I expected.

I stepped back.

"No.""

"They knew your father was a Carter.""

"No.""

I shook my head harder.

"My father was Daniel Hayes.""

Clara nodded slowly.

"That was the name he used.""

My stomach twisted.

"The name he used?""

Adrian spoke quietly.

"Your father was hiding.""

I looked at him.

"From who?""

Nobody answered.

Because I already knew.

"Eleanor.""

The truth came out piece by piece.

And every piece felt like another betrayal.

My father, Daniel Hayes, was actually Daniel Carter.

Richard Carter's firstborn son.

The original heir.

The child who was supposed to inherit everything.

Before Marcus.

Before Adrian.

Before Clara.

Before all the lies.

Richard had a secret first marriage before Eleanor.

A marriage nobody in the Carter family knew about.

A son nobody was allowed to know existed.

Daniel was raised away from the Carter empire because Richard believed wealth had destroyed his family.

But Eleanor discovered him.

And when she did, she saw a threat.

Because Daniel wasn't just another person.

He was the rightful heir.

"The night your father died," Clara said softly, "was the night Eleanor tried to erase the last person standing in her way.""

I felt sick.

"She killed him?""

Nobody answered immediately.

That silence told me more than words.

Marcus looked furious.

"All these years...""

His hands curled into fists.

"My mother did this?""

Adrian looked at him.

"She didn't do everything alone.""

Marcus froze.

"What does that mean?""

Adrian looked away.

"Richard knew Eleanor was dangerous.""

"Then why didn't he stop her?""

"Because he made a deal.""

I frowned.

"A deal?""

Adrian nodded.

"Richard promised Eleanor something.""

"What?""

"Control of the company.""

Marcus stared.

"Why would he do that?""

Adrian's voice became quiet.

"Because she threatened the people he loved.""

I looked down.

My heart hurt.

Richard had spent his final years trying to fix decades of damage.

And Eleanor had spent decades making sure nobody knew.

The next morning, Marcus and I sat in a quiet room at a hotel.

We couldn't go home.

Not anymore.

The apartment felt unsafe.

The Carter mansion felt like a trap.

Every place connected to our lives felt like it belonged to someone else.

Marcus sat beside me.

Neither of us had slept.

"I don't know who I am anymore.""

The words came quietly.

I looked at him.

"You are still Marcus.""

He shook his head.

"No.""

He looked at his hands.

"I spent my whole life believing I was my father's only son.""

A pause.

"Now I find out I'm not.""

I reached for his hand.

"You are still the man I married.""

He looked at me.

"And you're still the woman I love.""

For a moment, everything felt normal.

Then his expression changed.

"But Emma...""

"What?""

"If what Eleanor said is true...""

I already knew.

"My father.""

Marcus nodded.

"Your real father.""

I looked away.

I wasn't ready to think about it.

A man I never knew.

A family I never knew I belonged to.

A history hidden from me since birth.

Then my phone buzzed.

Unknown number.

Again.

Marcus immediately reached for it.

"Don't answer.""

But I did.

"Hello?""

A voice came through.

My mother's voice.

"Emma.""

I froze.

"Mom?""

Marcus looked at me.

"Where are you?""

Her voice was shaking.

Not angry.

Not afraid.

Terrified.

"I need you to listen carefully.""

My heart started pounding.

"Mom, what's going on?""

"Do not trust anyone from the Carter family.""

I looked at Marcus.

"Mom...""

"I should have told you years ago.""

Her voice broke.

"But I was trying to protect you.""

"Protect me from what?""

Silence.

Then:

"From becoming exactly what they wanted.""

I felt cold.

"What does that mean?""

She whispered:

"Your father didn't die in an accident.""

The room went silent.

Marcus heard.

His face changed.

"What did she say?""

I couldn't answer.

My mother continued.

"Eleanor Carter killed Daniel.""

I covered my mouth.

"Mom...""

"And Richard helped cover it up.""

The words destroyed everything.

"Why?""

"Because Richard thought he could control Eleanor.""

Her voice became emotional.

"He was wrong.""

I stood.

"Where are you?""

Another pause.

"Emma, don't come here.""

"Where are you?""

"I love you.""

The fear in her voice terrified me.

"Mom.""

Then she whispered:

"If Eleanor knows I told you, she will come for me.""

The call ended.

I stared at my phone.

Marcus was already standing.

"We need to find her.""

I nodded.

But before we could move, another message appeared.

Not from my mother.

From Eleanor.

A photo.

My mother.

Standing outside her house.

Taken minutes ago.

The caption:

*You were always too curious, Emma.*

My blood ran cold.

We reached my mother's house twenty minutes later.

The front door was open.

That was the first sign.

My mother never left doors unlocked.

Never.

Marcus went ahead of me.

"Stay behind me.""

I followed anyway.

Inside, the house was destroyed.

Drawers pulled out.

Pictures broken.

Furniture overturned.

"Mom?""

No answer.

We searched every room.

Nothing.

Then I found her.

In the kitchen.

Sitting on the floor.

Alive.

But terrified.

"Mom.""

She looked up.

And immediately started crying.

"Emma.""

I rushed to her.

"What happened?""

She held my face.

"I was so scared.""

Marcus looked around.

"Who did this?""

My mother looked at him.

Then away.

"She came here.""

My heart sank.

"Eleanor?""

My mother nodded.

"She wanted something.""

"What?""

My mother looked at me.

"The original Carter records.""

I frowned.

"What records?""

She reached toward a broken cabinet.

Behind it was a hidden compartment.

Inside was an old box.

My mother handed it to me.

"I kept these because your father told me someday you would need them.""

My hands shook as I opened it.

Inside was a birth certificate.

Old photographs.

And one letter.

The handwriting was familiar.

Richard Carter.

I opened it.

The first sentence made my entire body freeze.

*Emma, if you are reading this, then Eleanor has discovered the truth before I could tell you myself.*

I kept reading.

*You are not just Daniel's daughter. You are the final proof that my family can be saved.*

My eyes moved lower.

Then I saw the sentence that made Marcus step back.

*The child you carry is not only my descendant. It is the legal heir to everything Eleanor tried to steal.*

I looked at Marcus.

Then my mother.

Then the letter.

There was one final line.

One warning.

*But the greatest danger is not Eleanor. It is the person who has been protecting her all these years.*

The room went silent.

Marcus looked at me.

"Who?""

I turned the page.

And saw a name.

A name that made my blood run cold.

Because it belonged to someone who had been helping us from the beginning.

Someone we trusted.

Someone who knew every secret before we did.

The person who had given us the first clue.

The person who had helped track Clara's phone.

The person who had access to every Carter file.

I whispered the name.

"Richard's lawyer.""

My mother looked terrified.

"No.""

I stared at the letter.

May you like

Because underneath the name was a final message.

*Do not trust him. He is the reason your father died.*
