Chapter 8: The Secret Hidden in the Bloodline

The room went silent after Adrian spoke.

Not the normal kind of silence.

The kind where everyone is waiting for something terrible to happen.

I looked at him.

"Proof of what?""

Adrian didn't answer immediately.

His eyes moved from me to Marcus.

Then to Clara.

Like he was deciding whether telling us the truth would save us or destroy us.

Finally, he sat down.

"The Carter family has been hiding a secret for thirty years.""

Marcus crossed his arms.

"Another one?""

Adrian looked at him.

"I know how this sounds.""

"No.""

Marcus shook his head.

"You don't.""

His voice was filled with anger.

"You don't get to walk into my life and tell me I have a sister, a brother, and a family full of secrets.""

Adrian nodded slowly.

"You're right.""

That answer surprised Marcus.

"I don't.""

He looked down.

"But someone has to.""

I watched Adrian carefully.

There was something different about him.

Clara carried pain.

Marcus carried confusion.

But Adrian carried guilt.

Like he had spent years knowing something he wished he didn't.

"What secret?"" I asked.

Adrian looked at me.

"The Carter family has a tradition.""

Marcus frowned.

"A tradition?""

"Every generation, the first legitimate heir receives control of the family trust.""

Clara nodded.

"But Richard changed that.""

"Why?""

Adrian looked at my stomach.

"Because he discovered the truth about my birth.""

Marcus stared.

"What?""

Adrian took a deep breath.

"I was not born after you.""

The room froze.

"What does that mean?""

Adrian looked at Marcus.

"It means I was your older brother.""

Marcus didn't speak.

Neither did I.

Clara looked down.

"I was born two years after Adrian.""

Marcus's face changed.

"You both existed.""

"Yes.""

"And my mother...""

Adrian finished the sentence.

"Erased us.""

The story came out slowly.

Like every word had been trapped for years.

Adrian was born first.

The Carter family celebrated him as the future heir.

But when Adrian was a child, doctors discovered something.

Something Eleanor feared.

Adrian was not Richard's biological son.

Marcus looked shocked.

"No.""

Adrian nodded.

"I found the records myself.""

Clara looked at me.

"That's why she removed him.""

"She couldn't let anyone know.""

Marcus stared at Adrian.

"Who was your father?""

Adrian's expression hardened.

"Someone Eleanor worked with.""

The answer was vague.

Too vague.

But before we could ask more, Adrian continued.

"After I found out, I confronted her.""

"What happened?""

"She threatened me.""

My stomach tightened.

"How old were you?""

"Sixteen.""

Marcus looked sick.

"She threatened a sixteen-year-old?""

Adrian laughed bitterly.

"Your mother was never afraid of hurting children.""

Nobody argued.

Because we all knew.

Adrian explained that Eleanor spent years controlling the Carter family through secrets.

Richard had suspected something was wrong.

He investigated.

He discovered Adrian's identity.

Then Clara's disappearance.

Then the truth about the trust.

"Your father wasn't perfect," Adrian said.

Marcus looked at him.

"But?""

"But he was trying to fix what he broke.""

Adrian placed a folder on the table.

"That is why he changed the inheritance.""

Marcus opened it.

Inside were legal documents.

The real will.

Not the one Eleanor talked about.

Not the one she used to manipulate everyone.

The real one.

I watched Marcus read.

His expression changed.

"What?""

I stepped closer.

"What does it say?""

He handed me the paper.

My eyes moved across the page.

*The Carter inheritance shall pass only to the child who represents the restoration of this family, born from the descendants of my lost children.*

I looked up.

"Lost children.""

Adrian nodded.

"Richard considered us his failures.""

Clara whispered:

"He believed he destroyed his own family by trusting Eleanor.""

I looked at Marcus.

"And your baby?""

Adrian answered.

"Your baby is connected to all of us.""

That made no sense.

"How?""

He looked at Clara.

Then at Marcus.

"Because the person who carried the Carter bloodline back into this family was not who anyone expected.""

Marcus stared.

"What are you saying?""

Adrian looked at me.

"I'm saying Richard knew your child would be born before you did.""

A cold feeling moved through me.

"How?""

Clara answered.

"Because Richard had access to information from your family history.""

"My family?""

I frowned.

"My parents aren't connected to the Carters.""

Adrian looked away.

"That's what you believe.""

My heart started racing.

"What does that mean?""

Before anyone could answer, there was a loud crash outside.

Everyone froze.

Marcus immediately moved toward the window.

"What was that?""

Adrian looked terrified.

"She found us.""

"Who?""

He didn't need to answer.

Eleanor.

The next few minutes were chaos.

Adrian killed the lights.

Clara grabbed the documents.

Marcus grabbed my hand.

"Stay close.""

We moved through the apartment silently.

Then we heard voices outside.

Men.

Not police.

Not neighbors.

Security.

Eleanor's security.

"How did she find this place?"" Marcus whispered.

Clara looked at Adrian.

"You contacted her.""

His face changed.

"What?""

"You knew she was tracking you.""

Adrian looked away.

Marcus stepped between them.

"What are you not telling us?""

Before Adrian could answer, the door exploded open.

Everyone jumped.

Two men entered.

But they weren't alone.

Eleanor walked in behind them.

Calm.

Perfectly dressed.

Like she was arriving at a dinner party.

Her eyes went directly to me.

Then my stomach.

"I was hoping you would make this easier.""

Marcus stepped forward.

"You followed us.""

Eleanor smiled.

"Of course.""

"You hired people to watch my wife?""

"I protected my family.""

Marcus laughed.

"Protected?""

His voice shook.

"You burned her.""

Eleanor's expression didn't change.

"That was a mistake.""

I stared at her.

A mistake.

Like she had spilled coffee.

Not thrown boiling soup.

Not threatened my child.

"Why?"" I asked.

Everyone looked at me.

Eleanor tilted her head.

"Why what?""

"Why are you so afraid of my baby?""

Her expression changed slightly.

Only slightly.

But I saw it.

Fear.

"You don't understand.""

"Then explain.""

She looked at Adrian.

Then Clara.

Then Marcus.

"You think this is about inheritance.""

Nobody moved.

"It isn't.""

My heart pounded.

"Then what is it about?""

Eleanor looked at me.

And for the first time, she looked genuinely afraid.

"Your child will expose the truth.""

"What truth?""

She stepped closer.

"The truth that Richard Carter did not choose your baby because of the Carter bloodline.""

I frowned.

"Then why?""

Her voice dropped.

"Because your baby carries proof of a crime.""

Silence.

Marcus looked confused.

"What crime?""

Eleanor looked at me.

"Ask your mother.""

My blood went cold.

"My mother?""

Eleanor smiled.

"Yes.""

I felt dizzy.

"My mother has nothing to do with this.""

"Doesn't she?""

The room seemed to tilt.

I had spent my entire life believing I knew my family.

My parents.

My past.

My identity.

But Eleanor had a way of making every truth feel unstable.

Marcus looked at me.

"Emma?""

I didn't know what to say.

Because suddenly, I remembered something.

A conversation from years ago.

Something my mother said.

A warning I never understood.

*Some families bury their secrets. Some families bury people.*

I had always thought she was talking about someone else.

Now I wasn't sure.

Eleanor took one more step toward me.

"You want to know why Richard trusted you?""

She smiled.

"Because he knew exactly who you were.""

I felt my heartbeat in my ears.

"What does that mean?""

Eleanor looked at the folder in Clara's hand.

Then at my stomach.

"Your baby is not the heir.""

Everyone froze.

"The baby is the witness.""

Marcus stared.

"Witness to what?""

Eleanor turned toward the door.

And before leaving, she said the words that shattered the last piece of my certainty.

"To the night your real father died.""

The door closed behind her.

Nobody moved.

Then Clara whispered:

"Emma...""

I looked at her.

Her face was pale.

"Your mother never told you.""

"Told me what?""

Clara looked terrified.

"Your father wasn't the man who raised you.""

My breath stopped.

May you like

And then she said:

"Your real father was Richard Carter's first son.""
