Chapter 6: The Sister Who Came Back From the Dead

Marcus didn't speak for several seconds after reading the message.

Neither did I.

The apartment felt like it had stopped breathing.

The lights were on.

The city outside was still moving.

Cars were passing.

People were walking.

The world was continuing like nothing had happened.

But inside our home, everything had changed.

Again.

"She said my mother can't know she's alive.""

Marcus finally spoke.

His voice was low.

Broken.

I watched him carefully.

For years, Marcus had believed he was an only child.

For years, he had lived with a missing piece of himself without even knowing it.

Now, in less than twenty-four hours, he had discovered that piece was a person.

A sister.

A sister who was alive.

A sister who was afraid.

"Marcus.""

He looked at me.

"We need to find her.""

I nodded.

"Yes.""

He grabbed his keys.

"We go now.""

I reached for his arm.

"Wait.""

He stopped.

"What?""

I looked at him.

"We don't know where she is.""

"We can track the number.""

"Can you?""

He hesitated.

That was enough.

I understood.

"We can't just run outside because we're scared.""

His jaw tightened.

"Emma, my sister could be hurt.""

"I know.""

My voice softened.

"I know.""

I placed a hand over my stomach.

"And that's exactly why we need to think.""

Marcus looked down.

He immediately understood.

This wasn't just about Clara anymore.

Someone had already tried to hurt me.

Someone had already followed me.

Someone had already tried to make me look guilty.

Charging into danger was exactly what they wanted.

Marcus sat back down.

For the first time, I saw something I rarely saw in him.

Helplessness.

"What happened to my family?""

The question was barely a whisper.

I didn't know how to answer.

So I didn't.

Because sometimes the truth hurts too much to say out loud.

We spent the next hour trying to trace the call.

Marcus contacted a private security firm connected to Carter Holdings.

I hated that we needed them.

I hated that my life had become something out of a nightmare.

But I hated the idea of Clara being alone even more.

The security expert on the phone asked questions.

"When did the call come in?""

"Thirty-seven minutes ago," Marcus answered.

"Was the caller moving?""

"I don't know.""

"Did you hear background noise?""

I looked at Marcus.

The crash.

The voice.

The fear.

"Yes," I said.

The man paused.

"What did you hear?""

"A door.""

"Anything else?""

I closed my eyes.

I replayed the call.

The sound.

The panic.

Then I remembered something.

"Rain.""

Marcus looked at me.

"You heard rain?""

I nodded.

"Yes. Heavy rain.""

The security expert typed something.

"Interesting.""

"What?""

"That storm system is only affecting one area near the city.""

Marcus leaned forward.

"Where?""

A pause.

Then the man answered.

"Blackwood District.""

I had heard of it.

Old neighborhoods.

Abandoned buildings.

Places where people disappeared because nobody was looking.

Marcus stood immediately.

"We're going.""

This time, I didn't stop him.

Because we both knew.

Clara had reached out because she wanted to be found.

And whoever was chasing her wanted her silent.

Blackwood District looked like a place forgotten by time.

The buildings were old.

The streets were nearly empty.

Rain covered the windshield as Marcus drove slowly.

I sat beside him, watching every shadow.

Every person.

Every passing car.

My instincts were screaming.

"This feels wrong.""

Marcus looked at me.

"What?""

"Someone wants us here.""

He tightened his grip on the steering wheel.

"I know.""

The answer scared me.

Because it meant he felt it too.

We stopped near an abandoned warehouse.

The security team had tracked the signal to this location.

Marcus got out.

I followed.

"No.""

He turned.

"Emma.""

"I'm coming.""

"It's not safe.""

I looked at him.

"Neither is leaving me alone anymore.""

He opened his mouth.

Then closed it.

Because he knew I was right.

We walked inside together.

The warehouse smelled like rust and rain.

The floor was covered in dust.

Old equipment sat in corners.

Nothing moved.

"Clara?""

Marcus's voice echoed.

No answer.

We walked deeper.

Then we found something.

A chair.

A broken phone.

And a photograph.

Marcus picked it up.

His face changed.

It was a picture of him as a child.

Standing beside Clara.

On the back was a message.

*HE NEVER FORGOT YOU. HE WAS MADE TO FORGET.*

Marcus stared.

"Who wrote this?""

I looked around.

Someone had been here recently.

The dust near the chair was disturbed.

Then we heard it.

A sound.

A footstep.

Marcus turned.

"Who's there?""

Nothing.

Then a woman's voice came from the darkness.

"Don't.""

We froze.

The voice was shaking.

But familiar.

"Clara?""

A figure stepped forward.

Slowly.

Carefully.

She looked exactly like the woman from the hospital footage.

Older than the child in the photograph.

But the same eyes.

The same expression.

Marcus couldn't move.

Neither could I.

For several seconds, brother and sister simply stared at each other.

Then Clara whispered:

"Marcus.""

His face broke.

Not with anger.

Not with fear.

With pain.

"You know me.""

Clara's eyes filled with tears.

"Of course I know you.""

He took one step forward.

"Why didn't I know you?""

She looked down.

"Because they wanted it that way.""

"Who?""

She looked past him.

At me.

Then back at him.

"Your parents.""

The words hit like a weapon.

Marcus shook his head.

"My father?""

Clara hesitated.

That hesitation said everything.

"Not just Mom.""

I felt my stomach drop.

"What do you mean?""

Clara looked at me.

"Richard was trying to fix what he did.""

Marcus stared.

"What he did?""

Clara nodded.

"He made mistakes.""

Rain tapped against the broken windows.

"He thought money could repair everything.""

Marcus stepped closer.

"Tell me the truth.""

Clara looked at him.

"You were six years old when I disappeared.""

"I know.""

"No, you don't.""

Her voice cracked.

"You don't know because nobody let you remember.""

Marcus went silent.

Clara continued.

"Our father discovered something about our family.""

"What?""

She looked at me.

Then at my stomach.

"The Carter bloodline.""

I felt cold.

Again with the bloodline.

Again with my baby.

"What does my baby have to do with this?""

Clara looked afraid.

"Everything.""

Marcus stepped between us.

"Explain.""

She took a deep breath.

"Your grandfather created a private inheritance agreement decades ago.""

"The will?""

"No.""

She shook her head.

"The will is only the surface.""

She pulled something from her coat.

A small envelope.

"My father hid the real document.""

Marcus took it.

"What is this?""

"The reason your mother has been trying to control everything.""

He opened it.

Inside was another document.

I watched his face change as he read.

"What?""

His voice became quiet.

"What does it say?""

He looked at me.

Then at Clara.

"It says the Carter estate does not belong to the first grandchild.""

Clara nodded.

"It belongs to the first child of the erased heir.""

My heartbeat stopped.

Marcus looked confused.

"Erased heir?""

Clara looked directly at me.

"Me.""

Silence.

I stared at her.

"What?""

She swallowed.

"Richard changed everything because he discovered I was still alive.""

Marcus looked at the document again.

"If you're alive, why didn't he tell anyone?""

Clara's expression broke.

"Because he was afraid.""

"Of Mom?""

She nodded.

"But not only her.""

I looked at her.

"Who else?""

Clara didn't answer.

Instead, she reached into her pocket and pulled out another photograph.

She handed it to me.

I looked down.

And my blood ran cold.

It was a picture of Richard Carter.

Standing beside someone I recognized.

Someone I had seen before.

Someone I trusted.

The person I least expected.

"Emma," Clara whispered.

"Look at the date.""

My fingers trembled.

The photo was taken six months before Richard died.

And standing beside him...

Was Marcus.

But not my Marcus.

Another man.

A man who looked exactly like him.

A twin.

I looked at Marcus.

He was staring at the picture too.

His face had gone completely pale.

"That's impossible.""

Clara whispered the words I feared most.

"No.""

She looked at him with tears in her eyes.

"It's not impossible.""

Marcus looked up.

"Then who is he?""

Clara's voice dropped.

May you like

And the answer shattered everything we thought we knew.

"Your brother.""
