Chapter 2: The Promise My Husband Left Behind
Four days after my husband died, his mother told an entire cathedral that my unborn baby was a stranger’s child.
I stood beside David’s casket, one hand resting on my eight-month pregnant stomach, trying to remember how to breathe.
Only a few nights earlier, I had been at home when police officers arrived after midnight.
David’s car had gone over a cliff along Pacific Coast Highway.
There had been no final conversation.
No chance to say goodbye.
Only a devastating announcement that had split my life into a before and an after.
At the funeral, I had removed the insignia identifying my command position in the U.S. Army.
I wanted to mourn as David’s wife, not as a senior officer.
Most of the mourners had no idea who I really was.
I thought the worst pain I would endure that day was watching them lower my husband into the ground.
Then Eleanor Whitmore dropped a folder onto his casket.
“Your marriage is over. My son’s house is no place for you anymore.””
Inside lay a DNA report claiming David had a zero percent probability of being the father of my baby.
“That cannot be right,” I said.
Eleanor smiled as the whispers spread.
Chloe tore my wedding ring from my hand while everyone watched.
I wanted to scream, but my son needed me to remain standing.
Then I remembered David’s final words to me.
“I’ve secured the fortress, Sarah. Whatever happens... trust Sterling.””
I hadn't understood the warning then.
Now, as Eleanor ordered me out of the cathedral, I began to wonder whether my husband had known someone would come after me.
The doors suddenly flew open.
A figure entered, and the crowd fell silent.
Eleanor’s confident expression changed the moment she recognized the visitor.
She had prepared for a grieving widow.
She had prepared for a public accusation.
But she had not prepared for whatever David had put into motion before his death.
