Chapter 1: The Accusation at the Casket

The loud crack of a folder hitting my husband’s casket silenced an entire cathedral.

I was eight months pregnant, wearing my U.S. Army dress uniform, and standing beside the man I had buried my heart in.

Four days earlier, police officers had arrived at our estate after midnight with news that David Whitmore’s car had plunged off Pacific Coast Highway.

Now, before his body had even been laid to rest, his mother was trying to destroy everything he had left behind.

“Get your things packed and leave my son’s house tonight.””

Eleanor Whitmore stood across the casket, her expression almost triumphant.

I looked down.

DNA Analysis.

Probability of Paternity: 0.00%.

“That’s impossible,” I whispered.

“The results are official,” Eleanor replied.

“The baby you’re carrying isn’t David’s.””

The people who had comforted me moments earlier began whispering.

“She cheated on him.””

“Poor David.””

Then David’s sister, Chloe, seized my left hand and ripped my wedding ring from my swollen finger.

Pain shot through my hand.

I caught myself against the casket, protecting my unborn son.

Nobody intervened.

Eleanor called me nothing more than an incubator and ordered the attendants to remove me.

I refused to give her the breakdown she wanted.

Then the cathedral doors burst open.

Every head turned toward the entrance.

Because the person walking toward us was carrying something Eleanor had never expected to see at her son’s funeral.

And suddenly, for the first time that morning, my mother-in-law looked afraid.
