Chapter 7: The Woman Who Knew My Secret
I stared at my phone.
Sarah Mitchell.
The name meant nothing.
But somehow, seeing it on my screen made my entire body feel like it remembered something my mind had forgotten.
My thumb hovered over the answer button.
Ethan watched me.
“Emma.””
I looked at him.
“What if she knows?””
His expression softened.
“Then we need to hear her.””
Lucas stood slowly.
“I’ll leave.””
I looked at him.
“You’re leaving?””
“This is between you and her.””
I almost laughed.
“After everything you just told us?””
He nodded.
“I know.””
His voice was quiet.
“But Sarah didn’t call me.””
The phone continued ringing.
Finally, I answered.
“Hello?””
For several seconds, there was only silence.
Then a woman’s voice whispered:
“Emma?””
My breath caught.
“Yes.””
“I wasn’t sure you’d answer.””
“Who are you?””
A shaky breath came through the phone.
“My name is Sarah Mitchell.””
I looked at Ethan.
He moved closer.
“Why are you calling me?””
The woman hesitated.
“Because I should have called you years ago.””
My grip tightened.
“About what?””
Another pause.
Then:
“About the night your daughter was born.””
My heart pounded.
“Where are you?””
“I’m nearby.””
“How nearby?””
“Ten minutes.””
I looked at Ethan.
He nodded.
“Tell her to come.””
I swallowed.
“Come to my house.””
Sarah was silent.
Then she said:
“I’ve waited a long time for this.””
The call ended.
For the next ten minutes, nobody spoke.
Not me.
Not Ethan.
Not Lucas.
The three of us sat in that café with the weight of a secret that had survived years.
Finally, Lucas stood.
“I really should go.””
I looked at him.
“Are you sure?””
He nodded.
“There are things Sarah needs to tell you that I can’t.””
Before he walked away, he stopped.
“Emma.””
I looked up.
“I’m sorry.””
I didn’t know if I believed him.
But for the first time, I saw something in his face.
Not guilt.
Not manipulation.
Regret.
“I wish I had fought harder for you.””
Then he left.
On the drive home, Ethan held my hand.
Neither of us talked.
We didn’t need to.
Everything we believed was being questioned.
But one thing wasn’t.
Lily.
When we got home, she was sleeping peacefully in her crib.
I stood there watching her.
Ethan came beside me.
“No matter what happens…”
I nodded.
“I know.””
“She’s our daughter.””
Tears filled my eyes.
“I know.””
The doorbell rang.
My entire body froze.
Sarah.
Ethan looked at me.
“Ready?””
No.
I wasn’t.
But I opened the door anyway.
The woman standing outside looked nothing like the person I expected.
She wasn’t mysterious.
She wasn’t intimidating.
She looked exhausted.
Like someone who had carried a heavy truth for too long.
She had dark hair pulled back loosely and tired eyes.
When she saw me, tears immediately filled them.
“Oh my God.””
I stepped back.
“What?””
She covered her mouth.
“She looks just like you.””
My heart stopped.
“You’ve seen her before?””
Sarah looked down.
“I held her.””
The world went silent.
Ethan stepped forward.
“When?””
Sarah looked at him.
“The night she was born.””
My stomach twisted.
“Come inside.””
We sat in the living room.
Sarah kept looking toward the nursery.
Like she was afraid to look too long.
“Tell me everything,” I said.
She nodded.
“I was a nurse at the hospital.””
“Your nurse?””
“No.””
She looked down.
“I worked in the maternity ward.””
My fingers tightened around the blanket on my lap.
“What happened?””
Sarah took a deep breath.
“The night Lily was born, there was another baby.””
I nodded slowly.
“I know.””
Her eyes widened.
“You know?””
“We found records.””
Sarah looked at Ethan.
Then back at me.
“Then you know about the mistake.””
The word made my stomach drop.
“What mistake?””
Sarah closed her eyes.
“There were two newborn girls.””
I felt dizzy.
“One of them was yours.””
“And the other?””
Sarah looked toward the nursery.
“The other baby belonged to a woman named Rachel Collins.””
The name meant nothing.
“Where is she?””
Sarah’s face changed.
“She died.””
My breath caught.
“What?””
“She died three days after giving birth.””
Ethan leaned forward.
“What does that have to do with Lily?””
Sarah looked at him.
“Because Rachel’s baby disappeared.””
Silence.
I couldn’t move.
“What are you saying?””
Sarah’s voice broke.
“I’m saying the hospital records were changed because someone wanted everyone to believe there was only one baby.””
My hand went to my mouth.
“Mine?””
Sarah nodded.
“Lily.””
I shook my head.
“No.””
“I’m sorry.””
“No.””
My voice became louder.
“That’s not possible.””
Sarah’s eyes filled with tears.
“I know how much you love her.””
“Because she’s my daughter.””
“Yes.””
“Then why are we talking like she isn’t?””
Sarah reached forward.
“Emma.””
I pulled back.
She stopped.
“You are her mother.””
“Then why?””
“Because someone wanted to use the truth against you.””
My eyes narrowed.
“Diane.””
Sarah nodded.
“Yes.””
Ethan stood.
“My mother knew?””
“She knew everything.””
“How?””
Sarah looked down.
“Because she was there.””
My blood ran cold.
“Why?””
Sarah swallowed.
“Because Diane wasn’t trying to steal your baby.””
I frowned.
“What?””
“She was trying to protect someone.””
The room became silent.
“Who?””
Sarah looked toward the nursery.
Then whispered:
“Her own granddaughter.””
I felt like the floor disappeared.
“What?””
Ethan’s face changed.
“My mother doesn’t have another granddaughter.””
Sarah looked at him.
“She does.””
I shook my head.
“No.””
“Yes.””
“Who?””
Sarah reached into her purse.
She pulled out a photograph.
Not the one Lucas showed us.
A different one.
She placed it on the table.
My hands shook as I picked it up.
A baby.
A hospital bracelet.
A name.
I read it.
Then my entire body went cold.
Because the name wasn’t Lily.
It wasn’t Sarah.
It wasn’t Rachel.
It was:
*AMELIA PARKER.*
I looked up.
“Parker?””
Sarah nodded.
“Diane’s maiden name.””
Ethan stared at the photo.
“No.””
Sarah’s voice trembled.
“Emma, I need you to understand.””
I couldn’t look away from the picture.
“What?””
“Diane didn’t change the records because she wanted to hurt you.””
“Then why?””
Sarah looked directly at me.
“Because the baby who was supposed to go home with you…”
My heart stopped.
“…wasn’t the baby she was protecting.””
A cold silence filled the room.
Ethan grabbed the edge of the table.
“What are you saying?””
Sarah looked at him.
“I’m saying Diane knew the babies were switched.””
My fingers went numb.
“Switched?””
Sarah nodded.
“Someone made a mistake.””
“Who?””
Sarah’s eyes moved to the hallway.
Toward Lily’s room.
Then back to us.
“The person who made the mistake…”
She paused.
“…was me.””
The room exploded into silence.
I stared at her.
“You?””
Sarah nodded.
“I was the nurse who brought your daughter to you.””
My chest tightened.
“You said you were sorry.””
Tears rolled down her face.
“Yes.””
“Why?””
Sarah looked at me.
“Because when I handed you that baby…”
Her voice cracked.
“I already knew something was wrong.””
I stood.
My hands shaking.
“Then tell me.””
Sarah looked terrified.
“Emma…”
“Tell me!””
She flinched.
Then whispered:
“I didn’t bring you Lily.””
I stopped breathing.
The walls seemed to close in.
Ethan grabbed my arm.
“Emma.””
But I couldn’t hear him.
All I could hear was Sarah’s voice.
The voice of the woman who had carried the truth for years.
“I brought you the other baby.””
My eyes moved toward the nursery.
Toward my sleeping daughter.
My baby.
The child I had loved every second of every day.
Sarah whispered:
“And Diane knows where Lily’s real biological mother is.””
I stared at her.
“What?””
She reached into her bag.
Slowly.
Carefully.
Then she placed one final document on the table.
A birth certificate.
Not Lily’s.
Another baby’s.
At the bottom was a signature.
A signature I recognized.
Because it belonged to Diane.
May you like
And next to it was a handwritten note:
*“Find Emma before she finds Lily.””*
