Chapter 5: The Signature That Wasn’t Mine

I stared at the document on my phone until my eyes burned.

My signature.

My name.

My handwriting.

But not my memory.

I knew every curve of my own signature.

I had signed wedding papers.

Mortgage documents.

Insurance forms.

A thousand meaningless pages over the years.

But this one felt like a stranger wearing my face.

Because I had never touched it.

I immediately called Ethan.

He answered on the second ring.

“Emma.””

His voice was low.

“Where are you?””

“At my mom’s house.””

I sat up straighter.

“You’re still there?””

“Yes.””

“What is happening?””

A pause.

Then I heard a door close on his end.

“I found a folder.””

My heart pounded.

“What kind of folder?””

“Medical documents. Copies of records. Notes.””

“About Lily?””

“Yes.””

I gripped the phone tighter.

“What did you find?””

“I don’t know everything yet.””

“Ethan.””

“I’m trying to understand it before I tell you.””

My frustration rose.

“After everything today, you still don’t trust me with the truth?””

Silence.

Then he said softly:

“I’m trying to protect you.””

That stopped me.

“From what?””

His answer came quieter.

“My mother.””

I closed my eyes.

For the first time since this nightmare began, Ethan sounded afraid of Diane.

Not annoyed.

Not frustrated.

Afraid.

“Tell me what you found.””

I heard papers moving.

“She kept copies of Lily’s birth records.””

“We knew that.””

“No.””

His voice changed.

“She kept the original copies too.””

My stomach tightened.

“What?””

“The official documents from the hospital. The ones she wasn’t supposed to have.””

I stood.

“Ethan, bring them home.””

“I will.””

“Now.””

“I’m leaving.””

Then he hesitated.

“Emma?””

“Yeah?””

“There’s something else.””

I waited.

“There was another name in the folder.””

The room seemed to get colder.

“Whose?””

A long pause.

“Lucas Bennett.””

I felt the blood drain from my face.

“What?””

“I don’t know why yet.””

“Ethan, you need to leave.””

“I’m already walking out.””

“Ethan.””

“Yeah?””

“Be careful.””

For a moment, neither of us spoke.

Then he said:

“I love you.””

The words almost broke me.

“I love you too.””

The call ended.

I sat down beside Lily’s crib.

I watched her sleep.

So peaceful.

So innocent.

And I hated that adults had dragged her into something she never chose.

An hour passed.

Then another.

Ethan didn’t come home.

I checked my phone every few minutes.

Nothing.

Finally, at 9:47 p.m., my screen lit up.

Not Ethan.

Diane.

A text message.

*You’re asking the wrong questions.*

My heart started racing.

Another message appeared.

*You should be asking what happened before Ethan ever met you.*

I stared at the words.

Then another.

*Lucas isn’t your biggest secret.*

I immediately blocked her number.

But the damage was already done.

Because deep down, I knew something.

Diane wasn’t trying to scare me.

She was trying to control the story.

She wanted me reacting.

Not thinking.

At 10:15, the front door finally opened.

I ran downstairs.

“Ethan?””

He stepped inside.

But something was wrong.

His face was pale.

His hands were empty.

“Where are the documents?””

I asked.

He didn’t answer.

“Ethan?””

He locked the door behind him.

Then he turned around.

“She knows.””

My stomach dropped.

“Knows what?””

“That I found them.””

“How?””

He ran a hand through his hair.

“She was waiting for me.””

I froze.

“What?””

“I walked into her house, and the folder was sitting on the table.””

“That makes no sense.””

“I know.””

“What happened?””

He looked at me.

“She wanted me to see it.””

A cold feeling moved through my chest.

“Why?””

“Because she wanted me to come home and ask you.””

My voice dropped.

“Ask me what?””

He swallowed.

“The question she’s been trying to make me ask since the beginning.””

I waited.

“What question?””

He looked toward the stairs.

Toward Lily’s room.

Then back at me.

“Is Lily really yours?””

The words hurt.

Even though I knew he didn’t mean them.

Even though I knew he was repeating Diane’s manipulation.

They still hurt.

I stepped back.

“Wow.””

“Emma—”

“No.””

I shook my head.

“You said you believed me.””

“I do.””

“Then why are you asking?””

“Because I need the truth.””

I laughed quietly.

Not because it was funny.

Because I was exhausted.

“I have spent every day of her life taking care of her.””

“I know.””

“I was there when she was sick.””

“I know.””

“I stayed awake every night when she couldn’t sleep.””

“I know.””

“Then why are we acting like I’m a stranger?””

His face softened.

“I’m not.””

“Then stop letting your mother make me prove I’m her mother.””

That hit him.

He looked away.

“I’m sorry.””

I wiped my eyes.

“What did the folder say?””

He hesitated.

And that scared me.

“What?””

“There was a DNA test.””

The room went silent.

I stared at him.

“What?””

“A prenatal DNA test.””

My heart stopped.

“Why would there be one?””

“I don’t know.””

“Who ordered it?””

He looked at me.

“My mother.””

I felt sick.

“Diane tested my baby before she was born?””

“Yes.””

“Why?””

“I don’t know.””

I walked away.

My mind was racing.

Diane had known.

She had known something before Lily was even born.

Something she had hidden.

“Did the test say anything?””

Ethan didn’t answer.

I turned.

“Ethan.””

His eyes filled with conflict.

“It was incomplete.””

“What does that mean?””

“The report only had the first page.””

“And?””

“And the second page was missing.””

I stared at him.

“Missing?””

“Yes.””

“Who removes half a DNA test?””

Neither of us answered.

Because we both knew.

The person who wanted the truth hidden.

Later that night, Ethan searched through everything he had brought back from Diane’s house.

Nothing.

No folder.

No papers.

No DNA test.

Only the photo he had sent me.

And one small note he found tucked inside the folder.

A handwritten note.

Three words.

*“Ask Lucas why.””*

I looked at it.

Then at Ethan.

“What does that mean?””

“I don’t know.””

I shook my head.

“But I do.””

He frowned.

“What?””

“Diane isn’t afraid of Lucas.””

“She isn’t?””

“No.””

I picked up the note.

“She’s using him.””

Ethan stared at me.

“Why?””

“Because whatever happened before you and I met…”

I looked toward Lily’s room.

“It involves all three of us.””

“What do you mean?””

I took a deep breath.

“Lucas knows something about my past.””

I looked at the note.

“Diane knows something about Lily.””

“And?””

“And they both know something about the same night.””

The next morning, I woke up to an empty bed.

Ethan was already downstairs.

When I walked into the kitchen, he was staring at his laptop.

“What happened?””

He turned the screen toward me.

An email.

From the hospital.

The subject line made my stomach twist.

*Updated Request Regarding Birth Records.*

I read the message.

Then my hands went cold.

The hospital had received another request.

Another person wanted access to Lily’s records.

I looked at the name.

Not Diane.

Not Ethan.

Not me.

Someone else.

Someone I hadn’t thought about in years.

The request was signed:

*Lucas Bennett.*

And below it was a note from the hospital administrator:

*“Patient’s biological father verification pending.””*
