Chapter 6: The Lie She Saved for the Altar

The words on the envelope haunted me.

*Evidence of Claire’s betrayal.*

I kept reading them over and over, hoping the letters would rearrange themselves into something else.

A misunderstanding.

A mistake.

Anything.

But they didn’t.

Someone had written my name on that envelope with the intention of destroying my marriage.

And the person behind it wasn’t a stranger.

It was my mother-in-law.

Nathan sat across from me, staring at his phone.

He had stopped looking angry.

That almost scared me more.

Anger would have been easier.

Anger meant he still knew what to feel.

But now he looked lost.

“I don’t understand,” he whispered.

I looked at him.

“What?””

He shook his head.

“My whole life, I thought my mother was difficult.””

He laughed softly.

“Controlling. Dramatic. Overprotective.””

He looked at the photograph again.

“But I never thought she would plan something like this.””

I reached for his hand.

He held mine, but his grip was weak.

“We need to find out what’s in that envelope.””

He nodded.

“I’m calling Rachel again.””

This time, she answered.

The moment her voice came through, she sounded like she was crying.

“Hello?””

“Rachel,” Nathan said.

“Where are you?””

A pause.

“At home.””

“Why did you leave?””

Another silence.

Then:

“Because I knew you would find out eventually.””

My stomach tightened.

“Find out what?”” Nathan asked.

Rachel took a shaky breath.

“Your mother hired me for more than wedding coordination.””

The room went still.

“What does that mean?””

“She didn’t just want help organizing the ceremony.””

Rachel’s voice dropped.

“She wanted control over what happened.””

I closed my eyes.

Of course.

Of course she did.

“Explain,” Nathan said.

Rachel hesitated.

“She asked me to monitor certain things.””

“What things?””

“Your conversations with Claire.””

My eyes opened.

“What?””

Rachel rushed to explain.

“I never recorded you. I swear. I never listened in on private conversations.””

“But you were watching us?””

“I was watching the schedule.””

Her voice cracked.

“But your mother kept asking questions.””

“What kind of questions?”” I asked.

Rachel was quiet.

Then:

“She wanted to know if you and Claire were fighting.””

My heart sank.

“She was looking for a weakness.””

“Yes.””

Rachel sounded ashamed.

“She told me she had concerns about Claire.””

I almost laughed.

“Everyone who helps her says the same thing.””

Rachel didn’t defend herself.

“I know.””

Nathan’s voice became cold.

“What was in the envelope?””

Rachel went silent.

And that silence told us she knew.

“Rachel.””

“I don’t have it anymore.””

My stomach dropped.

“What?””

“She took it back.””

“When?””

“Before the reception.””

Nathan stood.

“Before the dress incident?””

“Yes.””

I looked at him.

The timeline clicked into place.

The envelope.

The dress.

The photograph.

Everything happened within minutes.

“What was supposed to happen?”” Nathan asked.

Rachel whispered:

“She wanted me to give it to you during the reception.””

“Why?””

“She said after the dress was damaged, Claire would be emotional. She said you would be looking for an explanation.””

I felt sick.

“She wanted Nathan to see it while he was angry.””

Rachel didn’t answer.

She didn’t need to.

“What was inside?”” I asked.

Another pause.

Then Rachel said:

“I don’t know everything.””

“What do you know?””

“I saw the top page.””

My voice became quiet.

“What did it say?””

Rachel swallowed.

“It was a printed email.””

My fingers went cold.

“From who?””

She hesitated.

“From Claire.””

I froze.

“What?””

Nathan looked at me.

Rachel continued quickly.

“I know it sounds impossible. That’s why I started questioning everything.””

“What email?””

“I only saw the first few lines.””

My heart pounded.

“What did it say?””

Rachel’s voice became almost a whisper.

“It said you had made a mistake.””

The room felt like it was closing in.

I looked at Nathan.

His expression was unreadable.

Not suspicious.

Not yet.

Just shocked.

Rachel continued.

“It looked like a conversation about the wedding.””

“Between Claire and who?””

“I don’t know.””

“Did you see the email address?””

“No.””

Nathan sat back down.

“Anything else?””

“Yes.””

Rachel sounded terrified.

“Your mother told me something.””

“What?””

“She said, ‘Once Nathan sees this, he’ll finally know who Claire really is.’”

My chest tightened.

Because that sentence was exactly how Isabella spoke.

She didn’t want people to discover the truth.

She wanted people to discover the truth she created.

After the call ended, neither of us moved.

Finally, Nathan stood.

“I need to talk to my mother.””

I looked at him.

“Are you sure?””

He nodded.

“Yes.””

“Don’t go alone.””

He looked surprised.

“I thought you wanted answers.””

“I do.””

I took a breath.

“But I also know your mother. She’s good at turning conversations around.””

Nathan looked at me.

“You’re right.””

That sentence mattered.

Because before yesterday, Nathan would have said I was being unfair.

Now he was listening.

We drove to Isabella’s house that evening.

The entire way, neither of us spoke much.

When she opened the door, she immediately knew something was wrong.

Mothers know their children’s faces.

Even controlling ones.

“Nathan.””

He didn’t step inside.

“Where is the envelope?””

Her expression changed.

Only slightly.

But enough.

“What envelope?””

I almost admired how quickly she did it.

The confusion.

The innocence.

The performance.

“Mom.””

His voice was exhausted.

“Please don’t do this.””

Her eyes moved to me.

Then back to him.

“You’re believing her?””

That was her first response.

Not denial.

Not confusion.

An attack.

Nathan’s jaw tightened.

“Answer the question.””

She stepped back.

“Come inside.””

“No.””

His answer surprised her.

“I don’t want another conversation where you make me feel guilty for asking questions.””

For the first time, Isabella looked wounded.

“You’re my son.””

“And I’m also a husband.””

The silence between them was painful.

Then Isabella looked at me.

“You’re happy now?””

I frowned.

“What?””

“You wanted this.””

My stomach dropped.

“Wanted what?””

“For him to choose you.””

Nathan stared at her.

“What are you talking about?””

She ignored him.

“You came into this family and slowly made him forget who he was.””

I felt a familiar ache.

But this time, I didn’t shrink.

“No.””

Isabella looked at me.

“No?””

I shook my head.

“You don’t hate me because I changed Nathan.””

My voice was steadier than I expected.

“You hate me because I gave him permission to choose for himself.””

Her face hardened.

Nathan looked at me.

And I saw something in his expression.

Pride.

Not because I fought his mother.

Because I finally stopped apologizing.

Isabella crossed her arms.

“You think you know everything.””

“No,” I said.

“I think I know enough.””

For a moment, nobody spoke.

Then Isabella smiled.

A small, cold smile.

“You still don’t understand.””

Nathan’s eyes narrowed.

“Understand what?””

She looked at him.

“You think I’m trying to destroy your marriage.””

She stepped closer.

“I’m trying to save you.””

“From Claire?””

“No.””

A pause.

“From what she did.””

My heart stopped.

“What I did?””

Isabella looked directly at me.

“Yes.””

Nathan immediately shook his head.

“Mom.””

“No, Nathan. You deserve to know.””

She reached into her purse.

And pulled out a small envelope.

My breath caught.

Not the same one from the photo.

A different envelope.

But inside it was something she had been waiting to reveal.

She handed it to Nathan.

“Read it.””

He looked at her.

Then opened it.

His eyes moved across the page.

The color slowly disappeared from his face.

I stepped closer.

“Nathan?””

He didn’t answer.

He just stared at the paper.

Then he looked at me.

And the fear in his eyes was something I had never seen before.

Not because he believed his mother.

Because he didn’t know what to believe.

“Claire…”

My heart sank.

“What?””

He looked back at the page.

“This is your handwriting.””

I stopped breathing.

Because whatever Isabella had placed in his hands…

May you like

It wasn’t fake.

It was something that looked like it came from me.
