Chapter 5: The Person Who Stood Beside Us

I stared at the phone screen.

At first, I refused to believe what I was seeing.

My brain kept rejecting it.

Because the name at the top of the message thread belonged to someone who had hugged me that morning.

Someone who had adjusted my veil.

Someone who had told me I looked beautiful.

Someone who had stood only a few feet away when my wedding dress was torn.

Emily.

My maid of honor.

The room seemed to tilt.

“No.””

The word escaped before I could stop it.

Nathan looked at me carefully.

“Claire…”

“No.””

I shook my head.

“That doesn’t make sense.””

The screenshot showed a conversation between Isabella and Emily from the week before the wedding.

The messages weren’t long.

They didn’t need to be.

They were enough.

*Isabella: I need you to understand how serious this is.*

*Emily: I don’t want to hurt Claire.*

*Isabella: You’re not hurting her. You’re helping her see the truth.*

I scrolled further.

My fingers felt numb.

*Emily: I don’t think Nathan would do that.*

*Isabella: You don’t know him like I do.*

Then:

*Emily: What exactly do you want me to do?*

The next message was from Isabella.

*Isabella: Just make sure she doesn’t get to the ceremony too quickly if something happens.*

I stopped scrolling.

My heartbeat became painfully loud.

“What does that mean?””

Nathan took the phone.

His face was unreadable.

“I don’t know.””

I looked at him.

“Emily was there when I was getting ready.””

“I know.””

“She helped me with my dress.””

“I know.””

“She cried when I walked down the aisle.””

Nathan looked at the screen again.

“Claire…”

I stepped back.

“No.””

I didn’t want another person added to the list of people who had betrayed me.

First Isabella.

Then Lauren’s revelation.

Now Emily.

It felt like everyone had been holding pieces of a story I wasn’t allowed to know.

“I need to talk to her.””

Nathan nodded.

“I’ll come with you.””

“No.””

He looked surprised.

“Claire.””

“I need to know if she chose this.””

My voice shook.

“But I need to hear it from her.””

The next morning, Emily arrived at our house.

She looked exhausted.

Like she hadn’t slept.

The moment she stepped inside, she knew something was wrong.

“What happened?””

I didn’t answer.

I handed her the phone.

She looked at the screenshot.

And the color drained from her face.

For several seconds, she said nothing.

That silence hurt more than if she had screamed.

Finally, she whispered:

“Where did you get this?””

My chest tightened.

“Is that your first question?””

Her eyes filled.

“Claire…”

“No.””

I shook my head.

“I want the truth.””

Emily sat down slowly.

“I can explain.””

I laughed quietly.

“Everyone says that.””

She looked at me.

“What?””

“Everyone who hurts me says they can explain.””

Her face crumpled.

“I didn’t want this.””

“But you did it.””

“No.””

Her answer came quickly.

“I mean yes, I talked to her. But I didn’t do what you think.””

Nathan crossed his arms.

“Then explain.””

Emily looked between us.

Then she covered her face with her hands.

“I messed up.””

That was not what I wanted to hear.

Because it meant it was real.

“How?”” I asked.

She wiped her eyes.

“Your wedding was two weeks away when Isabella called me.””

“What did she say?””

“She said she was worried about you.””

I almost smiled.

“Of course she did.””

Emily looked down.

“She told me you were overwhelmed. That you were having doubts.””

My eyebrows pulled together.

“I was?””

“No.””

Emily looked at me.

“I know that now.””

“What did she ask you to do?””

Emily hesitated.

And that hesitation told me everything.

“She wanted me to watch you.””

The room went quiet.

“Watch me?””

“She said you were under a lot of pressure and that someone needed to make sure you didn’t panic.””

My stomach twisted.

“And you believed her?””

Emily looked ashamed.

“I thought she was being a concerned mother.””

Nathan let out a bitter laugh.

“She was never concerned about Claire.””

Emily nodded.

“I know.””

I looked at her.

“When did you realize?””

Her eyes moved to the floor.

“After the rehearsal dinner.””

I remembered.

Isabella’s comment about my train.

The way Emily had looked uncomfortable.

“What happened?””

Emily took a breath.

“She called me that night.””

“And?””

“She told me the dress was a mistake.””

My hands tightened.

“She said you were too focused on your mother. That you were trying to make Nathan choose between families.””

My eyes burned.

“She said that?””

Emily nodded.

“She said you were going to isolate him.””

I stared at her.

“And you believed her?””

“No.””

The answer came immediately.

“I didn’t.””

“Then why did you keep helping her?””

Emily started crying.

“Because I thought she was just upset.””

She looked at me.

“I thought she wanted reassurance. I thought she was a mother who couldn’t let go.””

I looked at the screenshot.

“But you agreed to help her.””

Emily nodded.

“Yes.””

The honesty hurt.

But somehow, it hurt less than another excuse.

“What did she ask you to do?””

Emily swallowed.

“She wanted me to delay you before the ceremony.””

“Why?””

“She said she needed time to talk to Nathan.””

Nathan frowned.

“About what?””

Emily looked at him.

“She said she wanted one last chance to make him reconsider.””

My heart sank.

“And if she couldn’t?””

Emily didn’t answer.

She didn’t need to.

The answer was already obvious.

The wedding.

The dress.

The ex-fiancée.

Everything was part of the same plan.

But then Emily said something unexpected.

“I didn’t do it.””

I looked at her.

“What?””

“I didn’t delay you.””

“Why?””

She wiped her tears.

“Because I saw your mom outside the bridal suite.””

A cold feeling moved through me.

“What was she doing?””

Emily looked at Nathan.

“She was talking to someone.””

“Who?””

Emily hesitated.

Then:

“Your wedding coordinator.””

Nathan immediately straightened.

“Rachel?””

Emily nodded.

My heart sank again.

The wedding coordinator.

The person who had controlled the schedule.

The person who knew every detail.

The person who knew exactly where everyone would be.

“What were they talking about?””

“I don’t know.””

Emily looked frustrated.

“But Rachel looked nervous.””

Nathan took out his phone.

“Did you see anything else?””

Emily nodded slowly.

“Yes.””

“What?””

“She had something in her hand.””

“What?””

“A small envelope.””

I frowned.

“An envelope?””

Emily looked at me.

“She told Rachel, ‘This is the only way he’ll understand.’”

The room became silent.

Nathan looked at me.

“Who?””

Emily’s face went pale.

“Your mother.””

I felt sick.

Because now I understood.

The wedding wasn’t just about making me look bad.

It wasn’t just about bringing Lauren back.

There had been another move.

Another weapon.

Another secret.

Nathan called the wedding coordinator immediately.

She didn’t answer.

He called again.

Still nothing.

Then his phone buzzed.

A message.

From Rachel.

Nathan opened it.

His face changed.

“What?””

He handed me the phone.

The message was short.

*I know you found out. I’m sorry. I should have told you before the wedding.*

Below it was a photo.

Not a screenshot.

Not a message.

A photograph.

It showed Rachel standing with Isabella outside the venue.

And between them was the same envelope.

But this time, I could see what was written on the front.

My name.

And underneath it:

*Evidence of Claire’s betrayal.*

I looked at Nathan.

“What is she talking about?””

He didn’t answer.

Because neither of us knew.

But one thing was becoming clear.

Isabella hadn’t just planned to ruin my wedding.

She had prepared something that would make Nathan believe I had betrayed him.

May you like

And whatever was inside that envelope…

She had been saving it for the exact moment when I was most vulnerable.
