Chapter 7: The Baby Martin Voss Wanted to Bury
“Call the police.””
Grayson was already reaching for his car keys when I said it.
He stopped.
“Claire, if Martin sees the police approaching, he could hurt them.””
“And if we go after him ourselves, he could hurt us too.””
Marcus Reed entered the study carrying his tablet.
“What happened?””
I showed him the photograph.
He examined it for several seconds.
“That's Vanessa Monroe,” he said.
“And the infant carrier appears to contain a child.””
“Martin has taken her baby,” I replied.
Marcus enlarged the image.
“The vehicle is probably a black Mercedes SUV. The registration plate is partially visible.””
“Can you identify it?””
“I'm working on it.””
Grayson paced across the room.
“Find Vanessa's last known location. Check the security cameras around the St. Regis and the surrounding streets.””
Marcus nodded.
Then he looked at me.
“Mrs. Hale, I strongly recommend you remain here.””
I shook my head.
“I'm not staying behind.””
“Claire,” Grayson began.
I turned toward him.
“Vanessa knows something about Daniel. She has evidence Martin wants. And there's a baby involved. I'm not going to sit in this house while everyone else decides what happens to them.””
Grayson looked as though he wanted to argue.
Then he nodded.
“Stay close to Marcus.””
Within twenty minutes, Marcus had identified the vehicle.
It had entered a private parking garage near the St. Regis less than half an hour earlier.
The SUV belonged to a company registered under an unfamiliar corporate name.
But there was something else.
The company shared an address with Meridian Private Trust Services.
Rebecca Shaw called while we were preparing to leave.
“Claire, I've found something.””
“What?””
“The trust documents. Martin isn't simply a beneficiary or an administrator. He's listed as the person authorized to release the funds when a specific condition is met.””
“What condition?””
Rebecca hesitated.
“The death of Daniel Cross.””
I looked at Grayson.
“Then he needed Daniel to remain officially dead.””
“Exactly,” Rebecca continued.
“But there's more. The trust also contains a provision involving a dependent child.””
My heart began racing.
“What kind of provision?””
“An additional payment is released when Daniel's direct heir is legally established.””
I looked at the photograph again.
The infant carrier.
Vanessa's terrified expression.
The message about the final payment.
“Martin wants the baby,” I whispered.
Rebecca went quiet.
“What do you mean?””
“I think the child is connected to the trust.””
Grayson took the phone.
“Rebecca, get the original trust documents and contact the appropriate authorities. We have reason to believe a child may be in immediate danger.””
“I'm already making arrangements.””
He ended the call.
Marcus opened the car door.
We left for the St. Regis.
The private parking garage was almost empty when we arrived.
Marcus parked two levels below the main entrance.
He instructed us to remain inside while he checked the area.
Grayson sat beside me.
His jaw was clenched.
“Do you think Daniel knows about the baby?”” I asked.
“I don't know.””
“Vanessa said she met him in London.””
“She might have been telling the truth.””
“Then why would he allow Martin to take his child?””
Grayson looked at me.
“Perhaps he doesn't know.””
I remembered Eleanor's words.
Daniel had sent her a photograph of the baby.
He had apparently been trying to protect his child.
And now Martin had taken both Vanessa and the infant.
My phone vibrated.
A message from an unknown number.
Don't bring Grayson upstairs.
I stared at it.
Another message appeared.
He already betrayed Daniel once.
I showed Grayson.
His face hardened.
“That's Martin.””
“How do you know?””
“Because he wants to separate us.””
I looked at the message again.
Then another arrived.
Claire, if you want Vanessa and the baby alive, come to Suite 1806.
I remembered the conference room.
The Miami photograph.
The personal guarantee.
The forged agreement.
Everything seemed to lead back to that same number.
1806.
Marcus returned.
“There's a vehicle matching the photograph on level three.””
“Vanessa?”” I asked.
“I haven't confirmed that. But the security cameras show Martin entering the building.””
Grayson stepped out of the car.
Marcus immediately blocked him.
“Mr. Hale, wait.””
Grayson looked at him.
“She's in there.””
“We need a coordinated approach.””
Before either could argue, a man's voice echoed from the upper level.
“Grayson!””
We turned.
A man stood near the elevator.
He wore a dark coat and held his hands away from his body.
Daniel Cross.
For a moment, Grayson seemed unable to breathe.
Then he walked toward him.
“Daniel.””
Daniel didn't move.
“You shouldn't have come.””
Grayson's expression hardened.
“Martin has taken a woman and a baby.””
“I know.””
“Then help us get them out.””
Daniel looked at me.
“Claire, you need to leave.””
I stepped forward.
“I'm not leaving without Vanessa.””
His jaw tightened.
“You don't understand what you're involved in.””
“Then explain it.””
He glanced toward Marcus.
“Not here.””
Grayson moved closer.
“You've had six years to explain yourself.””
Daniel's eyes flashed.
“Six years? You think I chose to disappear?””
“You let me believe you were dead.””
“I was trying to stay alive.””
“You could have contacted me.””
Daniel laughed bitterly.
“I did.””
Grayson froze.
“What?””
“Three months after the accident. I called your office. I sent letters. I even went to the company headquarters.””
“I never received anything.””
“Because Martin intercepted every message.””
Daniel stepped closer.
“He told me you had signed the agreement. He said you had agreed to transfer my interests in exchange for my permanent removal.””
Grayson shook his head.
“I never signed it.””
Daniel stared at him.
“I know that now.””
I looked between them.
“Then why did you wait six years?””
Daniel's expression changed.
“Because I needed proof.””
He pulled a small envelope from his coat.
Inside were several printed photographs.
One showed Martin meeting with an unidentified man.
Another showed the original Miami executive suite.
The third showed a bank transfer.
Daniel pointed to the final image.
“That's the payment made to the man who died in my place.””
My stomach tightened.
“Who was he?””
Daniel looked away.
“Someone who trusted me.””
Grayson closed his eyes.
“You let someone die to protect yourself?””
Daniel's face hardened.
“I didn't arrange the accident. Martin did.””
“Then why didn't you go to the police?””
“Because the evidence pointed toward me. I was made to look like the person who arranged the death.””
He looked at me.
“And now Martin has something he didn't have six years ago.””
“The baby,” I whispered.
Daniel nodded.
“Vanessa's child is the only direct heir to the original trust.””
I felt cold.
“Why does that matter?””
“Because the trust was created using money that belonged to me and my sister. Martin has been stealing from it for years. If the child is legally recognized as my heir, the trust can be challenged.””
Grayson stared at him.
“So Martin wants to control the child to control the money.””
“Exactly.””
A metallic sound echoed from above.
Marcus looked toward the stairwell.
“We need to move.””
Daniel grabbed Grayson's arm.
“Listen to me. Martin isn't alone.””
Grayson pulled free.
“Where is Vanessa?””
“Upstairs. Suite 1806.””
“Then we're going.””
Daniel looked at me.
“If we go in there, Martin will use the original agreement.””
“What agreement?””
“The one bearing Grayson's signature.””
I stared at him.
“It's forged.””
“I know. But Martin has the original file. And he's prepared to make it look authentic.””
Grayson stepped forward.
“Let him try.””
Daniel shook his head.
“You don't understand. He's already sent it to the board.””
My phone vibrated.
A message from Rebecca.
Claire, call me immediately. The board has received a document accusing Grayson of authorizing Daniel's disappearance.
I looked up.
Daniel's expression confirmed it.
Martin wasn't just trying to escape.
He was preparing to make Grayson the criminal.
And the baby was the final piece of his plan.
We entered the building through the private service corridor.
Marcus contacted the police and requested immediate assistance for a suspected kidnapping.
Daniel led us toward the executive floor.
When we reached Suite 1806, the door was slightly open.
I heard Vanessa crying.
“Please, Martin. He's only a baby.””
A man's voice answered.
“Then you should have thought about that before you decided to interfere.””
Grayson pushed the door open.
Martin stood beside a conference table.
Vanessa sat in a chair near the window, her hands tied in front of her.
A baby carrier rested beside her.
Martin turned.
His expression barely changed.
“Grayson. I was wondering when you'd arrive.””
Grayson stepped inside.
“Let them go.””
Martin smiled.
“Of course. But first, I need something.””
Daniel appeared behind us.
Martin's smile vanished.
For the first time, the man looked genuinely frightened.
“Daniel.””
Daniel stepped into the room.
“Hello, Martin.””
Vanessa began crying harder.
Daniel looked toward the baby.
Then his face softened.
“Is he all right?””
Vanessa nodded.
“He's fine.””
Martin placed a hand on the conference table.
“Everyone calm down. This is a private business matter.””
I stared at him.
“You kidnapped a mother and her child. There is nothing private about this.””
He looked at me.
“Claire, you really should have stayed out of it.””
I walked toward Vanessa.
Martin raised his hand.
“Don't.””
Marcus moved between us.
“Step away from the table, Mr. Voss.””
Martin laughed.
“You have no idea what you're interfering with.””
Then he opened a leather folder.
Inside was the original agreement.
He placed it in front of Grayson.
“Sign the confirmation.””
Grayson stared at him.
“Never.””
Martin pushed a second document across the table.
“Then the board will receive this instead.””
It contained a statement alleging that Grayson had knowingly participated in Daniel's disappearance and authorized the transfer of sixty-three million dollars.
Grayson looked at the document.
Then at Martin.
“You're going to prison.””
Martin smiled.
“Perhaps. But not before you do.””
Suddenly, Daniel stepped forward.
“You forgot one thing.””
Martin turned.
“What?””
Daniel placed a small recording device on the table.
“Six years ago, you told me that nobody would ever believe my story.””
Martin stared at it.
Daniel pressed a button.
Martin's own voice filled the room.
If Daniel disappears, Grayson gets the company, I get the money, and nobody asks another question.
Martin's face went white.
Then, from the doorway, another voice spoke.
“Actually, Martin, someone has been asking questions.””
A woman entered.
She was carrying a leather briefcase.
I recognized her from the old photographs.
Eleanor Cross.
Daniel's sister.
And she wasn't alone.
Two federal investigators followed her into the room.
Martin took one step backward.
May you like
Eleanor looked directly at him.
“You should have left my family alone.””
