Chapter 5: The Agreement My Husband Never Signed
Grayson stood motionless.
I could hear Martin's voice through the speaker, calm and almost conversational.
“Come to the office tomorrow morning,” Martin said.
“Alone. We need to discuss the original agreement.””
Grayson tightened his grip on the phone.
“You're going to explain everything now.””
“Not over the telephone.””
“Martin, you have forty-eight hours to return those documents.””
“You still think you can give me orders?””
Grayson looked at me.
Martin continued.
“Be careful, old friend. You have a wife and a company to protect.””
Then he ended the call.
Grayson lowered the phone.
I walked toward him.
“Don't go alone.””
“I wasn't planning to.””
“Good.””
He looked at the handwritten note again.
“If Daniel really used someone else's death to disappear, then we need to find out who was buried.””
“And why Martin helped him.””
Grayson nodded.
I picked up the personal guarantee.
The paper felt ordinary.
White.
Clean.
A few printed paragraphs.
Yet it represented forty-eight million dollars and the possibility that someone had spent years constructing a financial crime around my husband's identity.
“Let's start with the signature,” I said.
Rebecca arrived at our house the following morning with a forensic document examiner named Thomas Bell.
Thomas had spent twenty-five years examining disputed contracts, wills, and financial agreements.
He placed the guarantee beneath a magnifying lamp.
“I'm not going to tell you whether this is authentic based on appearance,” he said.
“A convincing signature can be reproduced.””
He examined the ink.
Then the paper.
Then the pressure marks along the bottom edge.
After nearly an hour, he looked up.
“This document was printed after the signature was created.””
Grayson frowned.
“Explain.””
“The signature appears to have been scanned from another document and inserted into the agreement before printing.””
“So it's forged,” I said.
“It's consistent with digital reproduction. I would need the original electronic file and comparison samples before issuing a formal opinion.””
Rebecca took notes.
“Can you identify the source of the signature?””
“Possibly. The pressure marks suggest the source may have been a signed page placed on a scanner.””
Grayson opened his old files.
He found a series of original partnership documents from six years earlier.
Thomas examined them.
Then he pointed to one page.
“Here.””
The signature matched.
Almost perfectly.
It was a scanned copy of a document Grayson had signed when Daniel was still alive.
The old document had been a routine authorization allowing the company to negotiate a commercial lease.
Someone had extracted his signature and used it on the forty-eight-million-dollar guarantee.
Grayson stared at the page.
“I signed this in our first office.””
“Do you remember who handled the paperwork?”” Rebecca asked.
“Martin.””
I looked at her.
“Of course.””
Rebecca didn't respond.
She was studying the date.
“Claire, can I see the original Miami conference schedule?””
I passed her the folder.
She compared the meeting times with the document.
Then she noticed something.
“The personal guarantee references a meeting at 10:30 p.m.””
“So?”” Grayson asked.
“The executive suite was reserved until 11:45. But the document's metadata shows it was created at 8:12 p.m.””
I frowned.
“Before the meeting?””
“Yes.””
Grayson looked confused.
“What does that prove?””
“That the document was prepared before the meeting supposedly authorizing it.””
Rebecca closed the folder.
“Someone wanted the agreement to appear as though it had been signed during a meeting that hadn't happened yet.””
I looked at Grayson.
“Could Martin have prepared it?””
“He had access to your signature records,” Rebecca said.
Grayson stood and walked toward the window.
“Then Martin was planning this before Daniel disappeared.””
“Possibly,” Rebecca replied.
“But we need more evidence.””
I picked up the photograph from Miami.
Vanessa.
The watch.
The reflection.
Daniel.
“Why would Vanessa send me this?””
Rebecca looked at the image.
“Because she wanted you to focus on the affair allegation instead of the financial documents.””
“Or she wanted me to discover Daniel,” I said.
Rebecca paused.
“That's possible.””
I turned toward her.
“What if Vanessa wasn't trying to destroy my marriage?””
Grayson looked at me.
“What are you saying?””
“What if she was trying to force us to investigate something?””
He shook his head.
“She publicly accused me of fathering her child.””
“She also sent me a photograph with Daniel in the reflection. She deliberately blurred him, but not well enough to hide everything.””
Rebecca considered the possibility.
“Perhaps she wanted to create a distraction while giving you a clue.””
I looked at the photograph again.
“Then we need to know what she knows.””
I contacted Vanessa that afternoon.
I used a private number and asked whether she would meet me.
She agreed immediately.
We arranged to meet at a café inside the Plaza Hotel.
When I arrived, she was already seated near the window.
She wore a pale blue coat and had a large handbag beside her.
Her pregnancy was more noticeable now.
She smiled when she saw me.
“Claire. I wasn't sure you'd come.””
I sat opposite her.
“I want to ask you something.””
“About Grayson?””
“About Daniel Cross.””
Her smile disappeared.
For a moment, she looked genuinely frightened.
Then she glanced toward the entrance.
“Why are you asking me that?””
“Because you sent me a photograph from Miami.””
“I told you I didn't.””
“You lied.””
She leaned forward.
“Keep your voice down.””
I studied her.
“Were you photographing Daniel?””
“No.””
“Then why were you in the reflection?””
Vanessa stared at me.
I took out my phone and displayed the original image.
She looked at it for several seconds.
Then she whispered, “You weren't supposed to find that.””
I felt my pulse quicken.
“So you admit you sent it.””
She looked away.
“I didn't take the photograph.””
“Who did?””
“Someone who wanted to make sure you saw it.””
“Who?””
Vanessa's fingers moved toward her stomach.
“I don't know if I can trust you.””
I almost laughed.
“You publicly accused my husband of fathering your child. Trust isn't exactly something you've earned.””
She flinched.
“I had to do it.””
“Why?””
“Because nobody listens when a woman tells the truth quietly.””
“Then tell me loudly.””
Vanessa glanced around.
Finally, she leaned closer.
“Martin Voss has been paying me.””
The words landed between us.
I kept my expression still.
“For what?””
“To keep quiet.””
“About Daniel?””
She nodded.
“How long?””
“Almost two years.””
“Why?””
“Because I was there when Daniel came back.””
I stared at her.
“When?””
“Two years ago. In London.””
I felt my heart beating harder.
“Why were you with him?””
“Because he contacted me. He knew I had been at the Miami conference. He said I had accidentally photographed something important.””
“What?””
“A document. Martin carrying it into the executive suite.””
“Why did he need you?””
Vanessa looked down.
“He wanted the original conference photographs. He believed one of them showed Martin taking the guarantee out of his briefcase.””
I leaned closer.
“Did you find it?””
She nodded.
“It's in my possession.””
I stared at her.
“Where?””
She shook her head.
“Not here.””
“Vanessa, you need to tell me everything.””
She looked at me with tired eyes.
“Martin told me Daniel was dead. Then Daniel appeared in London and told me the death was staged.””
“Why didn't you go to the police?””
“Because Martin showed me a photograph of my younger sister leaving her apartment.””
My stomach tightened.
“He threatened your family?””
“He told me accidents happen to people who interfere with powerful men.””
I sat back.
For the first time, I saw something other than vanity in Vanessa's face.
Fear.
Real fear.
“What does this have to do with the pregnancy?”” I asked.
Her expression became guarded again.
“That's complicated.””
“Is the baby Grayson's?””
She didn't answer.
“Vanessa.””
She looked directly at me.
“No.””
I felt the air leave my lungs.
“Then why did you accuse him?””
“Because Martin told me to.””
I stared at her.
She lowered her voice.
“He said Grayson would never investigate the financial records while he was fighting a public scandal. He said the accusation would keep the board distracted.””
I felt sick.
“You used a pregnancy to destroy my marriage.””
“I didn't have a choice.””
“You always have a choice.””
Her eyes filled with tears.
“You don't understand what he can do.””
I stood.
“Then give me the photographs.””
She reached into her handbag.
Before she could remove anything, her phone vibrated.
She looked at the screen.
Her face turned white.
“What is it?”” I asked.
She slowly turned the phone toward me.
A message from Martin.
You have ten minutes to leave the café. Don't give Claire anything.
Vanessa looked toward the entrance.
A man in a dark suit was standing near the reception desk.
He wasn't looking at the menu.
He was watching us.
Vanessa grabbed her handbag.
“I'm sorry.””
She stood and hurried toward the restroom corridor.
I followed her with my eyes.
The man began walking.
I quickly took a photograph of him.
Then I called Marcus.
“I'm at the Plaza. I need you here immediately.””
“Are you safe?””
“For now.””
“Stay where you are.””
The man disappeared around the corner.
I waited several minutes before moving.
When I reached the restroom corridor, Vanessa was gone.
Her handbag was gone too.
But something lay on the floor near the door.
A small white envelope.
I picked it up.
Inside was a memory card and a folded note.
The note contained one sentence.
If I disappear, ask who paid for the baby.
I returned home with the envelope.
Grayson was waiting in his study.
He saw my expression.
“What happened?””
I placed the memory card on his desk.
“Vanessa says Martin paid her to accuse you.””
Grayson stared at me.
“She admitted it?””
“Yes.””
“And the pregnancy?””
“Not yours.””
He closed his eyes.
For a moment, he looked relieved.
Then his expression darkened.
“She used our marriage as a distraction.””
“That's what she claims.””
I showed him the note.
He read it.
Then looked at me.
“Who paid for the baby?””
“I don't know.””
We inserted the memory card into a secure computer.
There were twelve photographs.
Nine were from Miami.
Two showed Martin entering the executive suite.
The final photograph showed him leaving with a black folder.
But the most important image was the seventh.
It showed a close-up of the folder's contents.
A document.
A payment authorization.
And beneath the document, a handwritten name.
Daniel Cross.
Grayson leaned closer.
“That's not possible.””
“What?””
He pointed at the signature.
“That isn't Daniel's handwriting.””
I studied it.
“Whose is it?””
He stared at the image.
Then whispered:
“It's Martin's.””
Before I could respond, the computer displayed a notification.
A new file had appeared on the memory card.
It contained a short video.
I clicked it.
Vanessa's face appeared.
She looked exhausted and frightened.
“If Claire is watching this,” she said, “then Martin has probably discovered what I did.””
She looked directly into the camera.
“My baby isn't Grayson's. The father is someone Martin has been paying to stay hidden.””
She paused.
May you like
Then she said a name.
“His name is Daniel Cross.””
