Chapter 6: The Baby Belonged to the Man Everyone Thought Was Dead

The video ended.

For several seconds, I couldn't hear anything except the quiet hum of the computer.

Grayson remained motionless.

Then he replayed the final twenty seconds.

Vanessa's face appeared again.

“My baby isn't Grayson's. The father is someone Martin has been paying to stay hidden. His name is Daniel Cross.””

Grayson closed the laptop.

“No.””

I looked at him.

“What?””

“Daniel disappeared six years ago. Vanessa says she met him two years ago.””

“That doesn't make the pregnancy impossible.””

“I'm not talking about the pregnancy.””

He stood and walked toward the window.

“Daniel knew Vanessa when we were younger. They were involved before I ever met you.””

I stared at him.

“You never told me.””

“Because I didn't know.””

He turned.

“Vanessa and Daniel had a relationship before she and I became involved. It ended badly. I thought she had moved on.””

I thought about the Miami photograph.

The lipstick.

The watch.

The carefully arranged glass.

Perhaps the image hadn't been designed to prove Grayson had been with Vanessa.

Perhaps it had been designed to make us believe that.

“Grayson,” I said, “what if Vanessa was never trying to convince us that you were the father?””

He looked at me.

“What do you mean?””

“What if Martin wanted the world to believe you were the father because it would create a scandal big enough to bury the real story?””

He sat down slowly.

“The real story is that Daniel is alive.””

“And that Martin helped him disappear.””

Grayson nodded.

“And now Daniel has a child.””

I looked at the frozen image of Vanessa.

“Why would Daniel stay hidden while his child was being used in a public scandal?””

Grayson didn't answer.

I called Rebecca.

She arrived less than an hour later.

After watching the video, she immediately asked us to preserve the original memory card.

“Don't send this to anyone,” she said.

“We need to establish whether the footage is authentic.””

“Can you verify the photographs?”” Grayson asked.

“I can have them examined.””

“What about the pregnancy claim?””

Rebecca looked at me.

“That's a separate matter. We shouldn't assume the child's paternity based on a video.””

I nodded.

Vanessa could be telling the truth.

She could also be manipulating us again.

But the connection to Daniel was too important to ignore.

Rebecca examined the photographs.

The image of Martin carrying the folder appeared genuine.

The timestamps matched the Miami conference gallery.

The payment authorization was more difficult to read, but Rebecca identified a transaction number.

It corresponded to an account used by Hale Development Group six years earlier.

“Grayson,” she said, “do you remember the emergency reserve account?””

He nodded.

“Of course.””

“What happened to it?””

“It was closed after Daniel disappeared.””

Rebecca turned her laptop toward him.

“According to these records, it wasn't closed.””

Grayson frowned.

“What?””

“The account was transferred into a private holding company.””

“Who authorized it?””

Rebecca enlarged the document.

The authorization carried two signatures.

One belonged to Daniel.

The other belonged to Grayson.

I looked at my husband.

“Did you sign this?””

“No.””

Rebecca pointed to the second signature.

“It's another reproduction.””

Grayson stood.

“How much money?””

Rebecca typed something into the spreadsheet.

“Approximately sixty-three million dollars at the time of transfer.””

I sat down.

Sixty-three million.

Forty-eight million.

Eighty-six million.

The figures were beginning to look less like isolated transactions and more like pieces of one enormous financial operation.

Rebecca closed the spreadsheet.

“I'm going to need access to the original corporate records. And I recommend reporting the suspected fraud through independent legal channels.””

Grayson nodded.

“Do it.””

“Also, we need to understand what Martin has taken from the archives.””

Grayson looked at Marcus, who had just entered the room.

“Any update?””

Marcus placed a document on the desk.

“We reviewed the access logs. Martin entered the archive room twice this week.””

“Twice?””

“Yes. The second visit was yesterday afternoon.””

Grayson looked at the report.

“What did he take?””

“We can't confirm yet. But he also accessed the private executive records system.””

Rebecca leaned forward.

“Did he download anything?””

Marcus nodded.

“Several files. The download was completed through an authorized administrator account.””

“Which account?”” Grayson asked.

Marcus looked uncomfortable.

“Yours.””

The room went silent.

Grayson stared at him.

“My credentials?””

“Yes.””

“I haven't used that account in months.””

Marcus nodded.

“That's what I thought.””

I looked at Rebecca.

“Can someone use his credentials remotely?””

“Yes,” she replied.

“If they have the password and the authentication device.””

Grayson turned toward Marcus.

“Who has access?””

“Three people. You, me, and Martin.””

Rebecca slowly closed her notebook.

“Then we have a serious security breach.””

Grayson walked toward the desk.

“Disable every credential connected to the old system. Preserve the logs. Nobody touches another file without Rebecca's authorization.””

Marcus nodded.

He left immediately.

I looked at Grayson.

“Martin has been inside your company for six years, hasn't he?””

Grayson didn't answer.

But his expression told me enough.

At 4:30 that afternoon, Rebecca received a call from a forensic accounting specialist.

He had reviewed the payment records.

The first transfer into the private holding company had occurred six years earlier.

Three days after Daniel's reported death.

The recipient account was controlled through an offshore trust.

And the person listed as the trust's protector was Martin Voss.

I looked at Rebecca.

“Can you prove he controlled it?””

“We have strong documentary evidence. But we need the original bank records.””

“Where are those?””

“Possibly with the trustee.””

Grayson leaned forward.

“Who is the trustee?””

Rebecca hesitated.

Then she turned her screen toward us.

A company name appeared.

MERIDIAN PRIVATE TRUST SERVICES.

I recognized it.

Not because I had worked with them.

Because the company had appeared on several documents Grayson had signed during the early years of our marriage.

I looked at him.

“Have you ever used Meridian?””

He nodded.

“Years ago. They handled an estate structure for my father.””

“Did Martin recommend them?””

“Yes.””

Rebecca stared at the screen.

“That's interesting.””

“What?””

“The same company handled the ownership structure for the holding account.””

Grayson stood.

“Then Martin has been using our family financial arrangements to hide money.””

Rebecca nodded.

“Possibly.””

I looked down at the documents.

There was another name.

A beneficiary.

Not Daniel.

Not Martin.

A woman.

Eleanor Cross.

“Who is Eleanor Cross?”” I asked.

Grayson looked at the name.

His face changed.

“Daniel's sister.””

“Is she alive?””

“Yes.””

“Where is she?””

“I don't know. We haven't spoken in years.””

Rebecca searched her records.

“She appears to be listed as the beneficiary of the offshore trust.””

I looked at Grayson.

“Then perhaps Daniel wasn't hiding the money for himself.””

Grayson shook his head.

“Eleanor had nothing to do with the company.””

“Maybe that's what Martin wanted everyone to believe.””

Rebecca printed the document.

“I'm going to investigate the trust. But I need you both to understand something.””

She placed the paper on the desk.

“If Daniel is alive, and Martin has been controlling money intended for his family, this could be much larger than a corporate fraud case.””

“What else could it be?”” I asked.

“Potential identity fraud, financial concealment, and possibly a coordinated effort to create a false death record.””

I stared at the paper.

Then my phone rang.

Unknown number.

I answered.

“Hello?””

A woman's voice came through.

“Claire Hale?””

“Yes.””

“My name is Eleanor Cross.””

I looked at Grayson.

He immediately recognized the name.

Eleanor continued.

“I believe you've been asking questions about my brother.””

“Daniel?””

“Yes.””

“Are you safe?””

She laughed bitterly.

“No one in my family has been safe for years.””

I walked toward the window.

“Why are you calling me?””

“Because I heard Vanessa contacted you.””

I froze.

“How do you know?””

“Because she contacted me first.””

“Where is she?””

“I don't know. But I can tell you something she hasn't.””

I lowered my voice.

“What?””

“Daniel didn't disappear because of Grayson.””

I looked at my husband.

“Then why?””

Eleanor paused.

“Because Martin discovered Daniel had evidence of an enormous financial crime.””

“What kind of evidence?””

“Evidence that could put several powerful people in prison.””

“Why didn't Daniel go to the authorities?””

“Because the evidence implicated someone in his own family.””

I felt a chill.

“Who?””

Eleanor took a shaky breath.

“Me.””

I stared at the phone.

“What?””

“I didn't know what Martin was doing until it was too late. He used my identity to establish companies and move money. When Daniel discovered it, he tried to expose him.””

“Why would Martin use your identity?””

“Because I had access to the original accounts. My brother trusted me.””

Grayson stepped closer.

I put the call on speaker.

Eleanor continued.

“Daniel wanted to clear my name. But Martin made sure the investigation pointed toward him instead.””

“Then why fake his death?””

“Because he had no other choice.””

I looked at Grayson.

“Where is Daniel now?””

“I don't know.””

“You don't know?””

“He hasn't contacted me in months.””

“Then how do you know he's alive?””

“Because I received something yesterday.””

“What?””

“A photograph.””

My stomach tightened.

“Of what?””

“Daniel holding a newborn baby.””

The room went silent.

Eleanor continued.

“Vanessa's baby.””

Grayson closed his eyes.

I gripped the phone.

“Where was the photograph taken?””

“I don't know. But there was a message attached.””

“What did it say?””

Eleanor's voice broke.

“It said, 'Tell Claire the child is the only reason I came back.''”

I looked at Grayson.

The baby wasn't simply a way to manipulate him.

It was the reason Daniel had resurfaced.

But why had he chosen to contact us instead of his own sister?

Before I could ask, Eleanor said something that made my blood run cold.

“Claire, there's another thing you need to know.””

“What?””

“Daniel believes Grayson was involved in his disappearance.””

Grayson stepped back.

I stared at my husband.

Eleanor continued.

“He says Grayson signed the original agreement that put him in danger.””

Grayson shook his head.

“I never signed anything.””

“I believe you,” I whispered.

But Eleanor wasn't finished.

“There's a copy of the agreement in my possession. And it has your husband's signature on every page.””

The call ended.

Grayson looked at me.

For a long moment, neither of us spoke.

Then he walked to the desk, opened the black conference binder, and pulled out the original agreement.

He turned to the last page.

His signature appeared at the bottom.

But this time, there was something else.

A handwritten sentence beneath it.

In exchange for Daniel Cross's permanent removal, all remaining interests shall transfer to Grayson Hale.

I read it twice.

Then I looked at my husband.

“Grayson, what does permanent removal mean?””

He stared at the document.

His voice was barely audible.

“I think someone wanted Daniel dead.””

A new message appeared on my phone.

This time, it came from Vanessa.

Claire, I need your help.

Then another.

Martin has taken my baby.

And finally:

He's bringing the child to the St. Regis tonight.

I looked at the clock.

It was 6:17 p.m.

The same hotel where, less than a week earlier, Vanessa had publicly accused my husband of fathering her unborn child.

The same ballroom where six hundred guests had watched my humiliation.

Grayson reached for his jacket.

“Call Marcus.””

I picked up my phone.

But before I could dial, another message arrived.

A photograph.

Vanessa was sitting in the back of a black SUV.

Her wrists were tied.

Beside her was an infant carrier.

And in the front passenger seat sat Martin Voss.

He was holding a printed copy of the original agreement.

On the back, someone had written five words.

*THE CHILD IS THE FINAL PAYMENT.*
