Chapter 8: The Evidence Hidden in the Wedding Photograph

The following morning, Lauren arrived at my house carrying two coffees and a thick legal folder.
She placed one coffee in front of me.
"You're going to need this.""
I smiled faintly.
"That bad?""
"That complicated.""
She opened the folder.
Inside were copies of the disputed property transfer, the alleged medical declaration, and the documents from Rebecca's storage unit.
"I've spoken with the trust administrator," she said.
"They've agreed to delay consideration of Vincent's proposed management change while the authenticity of the documents is investigated.""
"Does that mean Emma is protected?""
"For now. But we need to challenge the underlying succession dispute.""
I took a sip of coffee.
"What about the signature supposedly made by Anthony?""
"That's where things become interesting.""
Lauren removed a photograph.
It was the same picture Rebecca had shown us.
Vincent.
Sophia.
Anthony.
And the handwritten document on the desk.
"We've obtained a higher-resolution copy from Rebecca's records," Lauren said.
I leaned closer.
"Can you tell whether it's real?""
"Not conclusively. But the signature appears inconsistent with several verified examples.""
"Could it be forged?""
"It could be. An expert will need to examine the original.""
I looked at the photograph again.
"Where is the original?""
"That's what we're trying to establish.""
She turned another page.
"Rebecca believes it was kept in Anthony's private office before the company reorganized its records.""
"Is that office still there?""
"Yes.""
I frowned.
"At Moretti Holdings?""
"Exactly.""
I looked toward the window.
Vincent's company.
The building where I'd spent countless hours helping him develop the business.
The place where I'd attended Christmas parties and investor dinners.
The place where he had once introduced me as his partner.
Now it was the place where he might have hidden evidence of a forged succession agreement.
"Can we get access?""
"Not without proper authorization. But the company has agreed to preserve relevant records following a formal notice from our attorneys.""
I nodded.
"Then what happens next?""
"We wait for the document examination and prepare for the trust hearing.""
I looked at her.
"When?""
"Friday.""
I glanced at the calendar.
Three days.
Lauren closed the folder.
"There's something else I want you to understand. Vincent may attempt to settle with you privately before the hearing.""
"Why?""
"Because if you agree to the property transfer or sign a broad release, it could complicate the financial investigation.""
I thought about his call.
We can still fix this.
He hadn't wanted to repair our marriage.
He'd wanted to make sure I stopped asking questions.
"I won't sign anything.""
"Good.""
That afternoon, Sophia appeared at my front door.
I saw her through the security camera.
She wore a fitted beige coat and oversized sunglasses.
For a moment, I considered ignoring her.
Then she pressed the doorbell again.
I opened the door but kept the security chain attached.
"Hello, Sophia.""
She removed her sunglasses.
"Claire. We need to talk.""
"No, we don't.""
"Please.""
I looked at her.
"What could you possibly have to say?""
She glanced down the street.
"Can I come inside?""
"No.""
Her expression tightened.
"Fine. I'll say it here.""
She stepped closer.
"Vincent is making a terrible mistake.""
I almost smiled.
"That's an interesting thing to hear from you.""
She ignored the comment.
"He's under enormous pressure. The company, the trust, the divorce. He's not thinking clearly.""
"And you are?""
Sophia's jaw tightened.
"I know him better than you think.""
"I believe that.""
She folded her arms.
"Claire, you need to stop helping Rebecca.""
I stared at her.
"Why?""
"Because she isn't telling you everything.""
"What is she hiding?""
Sophia hesitated.
Then she said:
"Rebecca manipulated Vincent for years. She used her father to control him. She wanted the company, and she wanted the inheritance for herself.""
I shook my head.
"Emma is the beneficiary.""
"That's what Rebecca wants you to believe.""
"Then why don't you show me evidence?""
Sophia looked irritated.
"You think you're smarter than everyone because you hired an attorney?""
"No. I think I'm safer because I did.""
She stepped closer to the door.
"Listen to me carefully. Vincent and I have been together for a long time.""
"I know.""
"Long before you.""
I stared at her.
"Did you enjoy watching him marry me?""
Her expression flickered.
"What?""
"You knew about me. You knew he was marrying someone else. Did you enjoy it?""
Sophia looked away.
Then she laughed softly.
"You always were dramatic.""
I felt something inside me go still.
Ten years.
Ten years since she had taken Daniel's hand and smiled at me.
Ten years since she had told me she only wanted to know whether he really loved me.
And now she was standing at my door, trying to make me believe I was the unreasonable one.
"You haven't changed," I said.
Sophia tilted her head.
"Neither have you.""
"What's that supposed to mean?""
"You still think people owe you loyalty.""
I stared at her.
"Do they not?""
She gave me a cold smile.
"Not when they can get something better.""
I slowly removed the security chain.
Sophia's eyes widened slightly.
But I didn't invite her in.
I stepped outside and closed the door behind me.
"Let me tell you something, Sophia.""
She looked at me.
"I spent ten years thinking what you did to me in college was the worst thing you could do to another person.""
I took a step closer.
"I was wrong.""
She said nothing.
"You didn't just take Daniel. You took the trust of someone who considered you a friend. You watched me cry, and you treated it like a victory.""
Her face hardened.
"And now you've spent years helping Vincent deceive his first wife, his daughter, and me.""
"Careful.""
"Why? Are you going to steal another boyfriend?""
Her lips tightened.
"You're making a mistake.""
"No. I'm correcting one.""
She leaned toward me.
"You have no idea what Vincent has promised me.""
I stared at her.
"Apparently, he's promised you everything that belongs to someone else.""
For the first time, Sophia's expression cracked.
She looked past me toward the house.
Then she said quietly:
"Vincent told me you were going to be easy to control.""
I froze.
"What?""
"He said you trusted him too much. He said you'd sign whatever he put in front of you.""
My heart began beating harder.
"Is that what he told you?""
Sophia realized she'd said too much.
She put her sunglasses back on.
"Forget I said anything.""
I reached for my phone.
"Say that again.""
She turned.
"Goodbye, Claire.""
She walked toward her car.
I stood on the porch until she drove away.
Then I called Lauren.
"I need to tell you something.""
"What happened?""
"Sophia came to my house. She said Vincent told her I would sign whatever he put in front of me.""
Lauren was silent.
"Did she say anything else?""
"She said he promised her something.""
"What?""
"Everything that belongs to someone else.""
Lauren exhaled.
"Write down the conversation exactly. Did you record it?""
I looked at my phone.
The call log showed I had accidentally started a voice recording when I reached for the device.
I opened the file.
It was short.
But it contained Sophia's voice.
Vincent told me you were going to be easy to control.
I played it for Lauren.
She listened carefully.
"Save that file in its original format. Don't edit it. I'll have it reviewed and determine how it can properly be preserved.""
I stared at the screen.
For the first time, Sophia had given me something more useful than another lie.
She had given me evidence.
On Thursday morning, Margaret called.
"Claire, we've received the preliminary document examination.""
I sat up.
"And?""
"The disputed signature attributed to Anthony Moretti is inconsistent with his verified handwriting samples.""
I closed my eyes.
"So it may be forged?""
"That's the preliminary finding. The examiner needs the original before making a definitive conclusion.""
"Have you found it?""
"Not yet. But there's a development.""
"What?""
"Rebecca remembered something about Anthony's private office.""
I waited.
"She says he kept a locked wooden cabinet behind the large portrait in his study.""
I frowned.
"What's inside?""
"She doesn't know. But she remembers him telling her that the original succession documents were stored there.""
I looked toward Lauren, who was sitting across from me.
"Can the company access it?""
"Margaret has requested preservation of the office and its contents. The company has acknowledged the request.""
I swallowed.
"Who has the keys?""
"Vincent.""
Of course.
Vincent.
I looked at the photograph again.
Sophia beside him.
Anthony seated at the desk.
The document in front of them.
Then I remembered something.
"Margaret, did Anthony ever give Rebecca anything else?""
"A key, perhaps. Why?""
I searched the photograph.
At Anthony's waist was a small leather key holder.
A silver key protruded from it.
I enlarged the image.
The key had a distinctive square head.
I remembered seeing something similar in the storage unit.
A small envelope inside the black suitcase.
I had overlooked it.
I told Margaret.
She went silent.
"Claire, can you return to the storage unit with Lauren and check?""
"Yes.""
An hour later, we were back at unit 214.
Lauren opened the suitcase and examined the remaining contents.
The envelope was hidden beneath the laptop.
Inside was a silver key.
And a folded note.
For the cabinet behind the portrait. Do not let Vincent remove the original documents.
Rebecca's handwriting.
Lauren looked at me.
"That's important.""
I held the key.
"Does this mean we can access the office?""
"Not without proper permission. But it may help Margaret establish the chain of custody and request supervised access.""
I nodded.
Lauren photographed the note and key.
Then my phone rang.
Vincent.
I answered.
"Hello.""
His voice was unusually calm.
"Claire. I've been thinking.""
"That's new.""
He ignored the sarcasm.
"I want to meet.""
"Why?""
"To settle everything.""
"There's nothing to settle privately.""
"Don't be difficult.""
I almost laughed.
"You're the one who brought a forged document into our marriage.""
He exhaled.
"Listen. I know Sophia has been talking to you.""
"She visited my house.""
"Then you know she's emotional.""
"She seemed perfectly capable of telling me what you said about me.""
He went silent.
I continued.
"She said you thought I'd be easy to control.""
"That's not what I meant.""
"What did you mean?""
He lowered his voice.
"Claire, I made a mistake. But you need to understand that the company is at risk.""
"Because Emma is claiming her inheritance?""
"Because Rebecca is trying to destroy everything my father built.""
"Then why is Sophia's company receiving our property?""
"That's a separate issue.""
"No, Vincent. It's the same issue.""
He sighed.
"Meet me tomorrow. Before the hearing.""
"Why?""
"Because I can give you something.""
"What?""
"Your freedom.""
I frowned.
"What does that mean?""
"I'll give you the house. The investments. Everything you want. In exchange for one thing.""
I looked at Lauren.
She had begun writing.
"What thing?""
"Withdraw your support for Rebecca and Emma.""
I stared at the phone.
He was offering me everything.
Everything except the truth.
I asked quietly:
"Are you asking me to help you take your daughter's inheritance?""
"I'm asking you to stay out of it.""
"And if I refuse?""
His voice hardened.
"Then you'll lose more than you think.""
The call ended.
Lauren looked up.
"Did he make an offer?""
"Yes.""
"What did he want?""
I repeated his words.
Lauren closed her notebook.
"Don't accept anything. I'll have the offer documented through our legal correspondence.""
I looked at the silver key.
Then at the photograph of Anthony.
"Tomorrow is the hearing.""
"Yes.""
"Will he be there?""
"Almost certainly.""
I nodded.
"Good.""
That evening, Rebecca called.
Her voice sounded strained.
"Claire, I need you to listen carefully.""
"What happened?""
"Vincent has contacted the company secretary.""
"For what?""
"He's requesting an emergency board meeting before the trust hearing.""
"Can he do that?""
"He can request it. Whether they approve it is another matter.""
"What does he want?""
Rebecca hesitated.
"To remove the independent administrator and appoint himself.""
My stomach tightened.
"Can he?""
"Not without Emma's consent and the required approvals.""
"Then why try?""
"Because he's running out of time.""
I looked at the documents on my desk.
"Rebecca, I have something.""
I told her about the silver key and the note.
She went quiet.
Then she whispered:
"Anthony's cabinet.""
"Yes.""
"Claire, that cabinet may contain the original agreement.""
"Then we need to find it.""
Rebecca exhaled.
"There's something else.""
"What?""
"Anthony didn't just leave Emma the controlling interest.""
I frowned.
"What do you mean?""
"He included a condition.""
"What condition?""
Rebecca's voice trembled.
"If anyone attempted to forge or alter the succession agreement, the entire company would be subject to an independent forensic audit.""
I sat up.
"An audit of the entire company?""
"Yes. Every subsidiary. Every transfer. Every related-party payment.""
I stared at Lauren.
She had heard everything.
Then Rebecca said:
"Vincent knows about that clause.""
I swallowed.
"Then why would he risk forging the document?""
"Because he believes the original agreement is gone.""
I looked at the silver key.
"Maybe it isn't.""
Rebecca was silent.
Then she said:
"Claire, if we find the original, Vincent loses the ability to control the company.""
"And Sophia?""
Rebecca's voice became bitter.
"She loses the money she's been promised.""
I looked at the photograph from Bellissimo.
The anniversary dinner.
The cake.
The necklace.
Suddenly, Sophia's presence at that table seemed different.
She hadn't simply been celebrating an affair.
She had been celebrating a future she believed was already secured.
But that future depended on one thing.
A signature.
And tomorrow, in front of a judge, we were going to discover whether the signature Vincent had forged would destroy him.
Then my phone vibrated.
A message from an unknown number.
It contained a photograph of the silver key.
Taken from inside my house.
Underneath it were seven words.
You should have left the past alone.
I stared at the screen.
May you like
Someone had been inside my home.
And they knew exactly what we had found.
