Chapter 4: The First Wife Nobody Told Me About

I didn't sleep that night.

At 3:17 a.m., I was still sitting on the edge of the bed, staring at the photograph Evelyn had sent me.

Vincent looked younger in it. His hair was longer, his face thinner, and his smile was almost boyish.

The woman beside him wore an ivory wedding dress with delicate lace sleeves.

Her left hand rested against his chest.

And around her neck hung a silver crescent-moon necklace.

The same necklace Sophia had worn at Bellissimo.

I enlarged the photograph.

There was something familiar about the woman.

Not her face.

Her posture.

The way she tilted her head slightly toward the camera.

Then I noticed the date written on the back of the photograph.

October 14, 2012.

Vincent and I had met in March 2016.

He had been married before me.

And somehow, in seven years of marriage, he had never mentioned it.

At 6:40 a.m., I finally sent Evelyn a message.

I'll meet you at ten. But I want the truth.

Her response came almost immediately.

You deserve it. Come alone.

I didn't like those last two words.

But I agreed.

At 8:15, Lauren called.

"Claire, I've spoken with the property attorney.""

"What did they say?""

"We're preparing an urgent request to prevent any unauthorized transfer of the Mercer Avenue property. I also want you to send me the photograph of the alleged authorization and the email you found.""

"I have them.""

"Good. Don't alter the originals. And don't sign anything Vincent puts in front of you.""

"I won't.""

There was a pause.

"One more thing. I ran a preliminary check on Sophia Reynolds Consulting.""

"And?""

"The company was incorporated less than a year ago. Its registered address is a private office suite. We haven't confirmed its business activities yet.""

I looked toward the bedroom door.

"Do you think it's a shell company?""

"I think we need more information before calling it anything.""

"Understood.""

"Claire, are you meeting anyone today?""

I hesitated.

"Vincent's mother.""

"Why?""

"She says she knows about the property transfer. And she says Vincent had a first wife.""

Lauren went quiet.

"Did you know about this marriage?""

"No.""

"Interesting. Bring me everything she gives you. Don't promise anything, don't sign anything, and don't agree to any private financial arrangement.""

"I understand.""

"Call me immediately if something feels wrong.""

After the call, I showered and changed into a cream sweater and black trousers.

I looked at myself in the mirror.

My wedding ring was still on my finger.

I considered removing it.

Then I decided against it.

I wanted Vincent's mother to see exactly what her son had done to the woman who had believed him.

At 9:52, I arrived at the small café where Evelyn had suggested we meet.

She was already sitting in the back corner.

She looked older than I remembered.

Her silver hair was neatly arranged, but her hands trembled slightly as she lifted her coffee cup.

When she saw me, she stood.

"Claire.""

"Hello, Evelyn.""

She reached for my hands.

"I'm so sorry.""

I gently withdrew them.

"Let's sit down.""

Her eyes filled with tears.

We ordered coffee.

For almost a minute, neither of us spoke.

Finally, I placed my phone on the table.

"Who was Vincent's first wife?""

Evelyn looked toward the window.

"Her name was Rebecca.""

"Why didn't he tell me?""

"Because he wanted you to believe he had no history.""

"Everyone has a history.""

"Not everyone has a history they're trying to bury.""

I leaned forward.

"Was he divorced?""

"Yes. Technically.""

"Technically?""

Evelyn took a breath.

"Rebecca disappeared from his life under circumstances I never fully understood. The divorce was finalized several years before you met him.""

"Why did she leave?""

Evelyn shook her head.

"Vincent told everyone she had betrayed him. He said she'd been seeing someone else.""

"And you believed him?""

"I wanted to.""

Her voice cracked.

"He was my son, Claire. I thought he was telling me the truth.""

I looked at the photograph on my phone.

"Why is Sophia wearing Rebecca's necklace?""

Evelyn's fingers tightened around her cup.

"Because Sophia was close to Rebecca.""

"How close?""

"Very close.""

I waited.

Evelyn looked at me.

"Rebecca was Sophia's older half-sister.""

For several seconds, I couldn't move.

Sophia Reynolds.

Rebecca's younger half-sister.

Vincent's former wife.

And now his mistress.

I slowly leaned back.

"You're telling me he is having an affair with his former wife's sister?""

Evelyn nodded.

"Yes.""

I stared at her.

"Did Sophia know he was married to Rebecca when she started seeing him?""

"Of course.""

"Then this wasn't some accidental reunion.""

"No.""

"How long have they known each other?""

"Since before you met Vincent.""

I felt a cold sensation move through my chest.

"How long?""

Evelyn looked down.

"At least ten years.""

The café suddenly seemed too loud.

A coffee machine hissed behind the counter. Someone laughed near the entrance. A spoon struck the side of a ceramic cup.

Ordinary sounds.

An ordinary morning.

And I was learning that my marriage might have been built around a secret.

"Why did you let me marry him?"" I whispered.

Evelyn's face crumpled.

"I tried to warn you.""

"You asked me about ownership structures. You told me to read documents carefully. You never mentioned Rebecca.""

"I was afraid.""

"Of Vincent?""

She nodded.

I stared at her.

"Why?""

Evelyn reached into her handbag and removed a brown envelope.

She pushed it toward me.

"Because Rebecca left something behind.""

I opened the envelope.

Inside were photocopies of several letters, bank statements, and an old photograph.

The first letter was addressed to Evelyn.

The handwriting was elegant and slightly slanted.

Dear Evelyn,

If you're reading this, it means Vincent has started telling people that I abandoned him. I didn't. I left because I discovered what he was doing with the family business, and because I was afraid of what would happen if I stayed.

I stopped reading.

My eyes moved to the next paragraph.

He has been moving money through companies that don't provide real services. Sophia knows about it. She helped him establish the first one. I have copies of the original records.

I looked up.

"Evelyn, what is this?""

"Rebecca sent those letters to me shortly before she left.""

"Why didn't you go to the police?""

"I tried speaking to Vincent's father. He said it was a misunderstanding. Then the documents disappeared.""

"Documents don't disappear by themselves.""

"No. They don't.""

She lowered her voice.

"Rebecca told me she had discovered money being moved out of Moretti Holdings. When she confronted Vincent, he accused her of stealing from the company. He threatened to have her investigated.""

I looked back at the letter.

"Did he?""

"He tried. Rebecca hired an attorney, and eventually they settled the divorce. She left the country.""

"Where is she now?""

"I don't know.""

I stared at the old photograph.

It showed Rebecca standing beside Sophia at what appeared to be a family gathering.

The sisters looked remarkably alike.

But Sophia was smiling at the camera.

Rebecca wasn't.

There was something tense in her expression.

"Why is Sophia involved again?"" I asked.

Evelyn took a shaky breath.

"Because Vincent never stopped communicating with her.""

I felt sick.

"Even after the divorce?""

"Yes.""

"And you knew?""

"I suspected.""

I pushed the papers away.

"Why did you wait until now to tell me?""

Evelyn's eyes filled.

"Because three weeks ago, Vincent came to see me.""

"What did he want?""

"He asked me to sign a document.""

"What document?""

"A statement confirming that Rebecca had voluntarily surrendered certain financial claims before the divorce.""

I frowned.

"Did she?""

"No.""

"Then why would he ask you to sign it?""

"Because the original paperwork was missing.""

I felt my stomach tighten.

"Did you sign?""

"No.""

Evelyn reached across the table.

"Claire, I need you to understand something. Vincent isn't simply trying to start a new life with Sophia. He's trying to erase the financial history that connects him to Rebecca.""

"And now he's trying to transfer my property.""

"Yes.""

I looked at the envelope again.

There were several bank statements inside.

One caught my attention.

The account number looked familiar.

I took out my phone and compared it with the investment account details Lauren had mentioned.

The final four digits matched.

My breath caught.

"This is the same investment account.""

Evelyn nodded.

"Rebecca used to monitor it. She kept records of the transfers.""

I looked at her.

"How much money did Vincent move?""

"I don't know the final amount.""

"How much did Rebecca discover?""

Evelyn hesitated.

"More than a million dollars.""

I stared at her.

Then my phone vibrated.

A message from Lauren.

The property attorney has identified a pending transfer request. We need the original ownership documents immediately. There may also be an issue involving the validity of the authorization.

I showed Evelyn.

She read it and went pale.

"He's doing it again.""

"Doing what?""

"Trying to use someone else's signature to move property.""

I looked at her.

"Did he forge Rebecca's signature too?""

Evelyn didn't answer.

She didn't need to.

I gathered the documents and placed them back inside the envelope.

Then I stood.

"Claire, wait.""

I looked at her.

She reached into her handbag and removed a small silver key.

"What's this?""

"Rebecca's storage unit.""

I frowned.

"Why are you giving it to me?""

"Because she told me that if Vincent ever tried to move the property again, I should give this to the woman he was married to.""

My fingers tightened around the key.

"Did Rebecca know about me?""

Evelyn nodded.

"She knew your name.""

A chill ran through me.

"How?""

"She told me she'd seen you in a photograph. She said you looked kind.""

I stared at the key.

Then Evelyn added something that made the entire café seem to disappear.

"She also said Sophia would eventually try to take everything you had.""

I looked up sharply.

"Why would she say that?""

May you like

Evelyn's voice dropped.

"Because Sophia had done it before.""
