Chapter 6: The Daughter He Tried to Erase

For several seconds, I couldn't speak.

The storage unit seemed to shrink around me.

Lauren was standing beside the filing cabinet, listening carefully to Margaret through the phone.

I finally managed to ask:

"What could an eighteen-year-old girl possibly inherit that Vincent doesn't already have?""

Margaret exhaled.

"That's complicated, but I'll explain what I can.""

"Please.""

"Rebecca's father owned a substantial interest in a commercial property portfolio before he died. His estate was structured through a family trust. Emma was named as the primary beneficiary of one portion of that trust.""

I looked at the photograph.

"How much?""

"The original valuation was several million dollars. The current value may be considerably higher.""

I closed my eyes.

"And Vincent?""

"He was never the beneficiary. But during his marriage to Rebecca, he attempted to establish a management arrangement that would have given him influence over the assets.""

"Did he succeed?""

"Not entirely. Rebecca discovered the arrangement and challenged it.""

I remembered the old letter.

The money.

The missing records.

The threats.

"So that's why he hid Emma?""

"I can't prove that was his only reason. But Rebecca believed he wanted to keep Emma's existence out of public records for as long as possible.""

I looked at Lauren.

She had gone very still.

"Margaret," I said, "why would Sophia be involved?""

"Because Sophia was listed as a potential administrative contact on some of the original documents. She had access to information about Rebecca's family trust.""

I felt sick.

"She was helping Vincent take money from her own sister?""

"That's what the correspondence suggests. We are still verifying everything.""

I stared at the letter.

Then I asked the question that had been bothering me.

"Does Emma know who her father is?""

Margaret paused.

"Yes.""

"Does she know about Vincent's second marriage?""

"She knows he remarried. She does not know the full circumstances of his financial dealings.""

"Where is she?""

"Rebecca has kept her location private for safety reasons.""

I nodded slowly.

"Does she know about me?""

"She knows your name.""

I swallowed.

"Why?""

"Because Rebecca told her that you were not responsible for what Vincent had done.""

I looked down at my wedding ring.

For the first time, I wondered whether I was standing in the middle of a story that had begun before I ever met my husband.

Margaret continued.

"Claire, I need to ask you something. Have you received any documents from Vincent recently?""

"Yes. A property authorization.""

"Did you sign it?""

"I signed some routine paperwork. I did not sign anything transferring my ownership.""

"Good. Please preserve every document and let your attorney handle the next steps.""

Lauren took the phone.

She exchanged details with Margaret and arranged for a secure transfer of the records.

When the call ended, I remained seated on the concrete floor.

Lauren crouched beside me.

"Are you all right?""

I shook my head.

"No.""

"That's understandable.""

"I married a man who had a secret wife, a hidden daughter, and a financial arrangement with his mistress.""

"Allegedly, based on the records we've seen. We still need to verify the details.""

I looked at her.

"You're right. I'm sorry.""

"Don't apologize. But we need to separate what we know from what we suspect. That protects you.""

I nodded.

We spent another hour documenting the contents of the storage unit.

The records showed repeated payments to Sophia's companies, correspondence about Rebecca's divorce, and references to the family trust.

There was also a folder containing copies of Vincent's old business presentations.

One page caught my attention.

A diagram showed the ownership structure of Moretti Holdings.

At the top was Vincent's father, Anthony Moretti.

Below him were several subsidiaries.

And at the bottom was a company I recognized.

Moretti Property Development.

The company that owned the Mercer Avenue building.

I pointed to it.

"Lauren, this is the company holding our property.""

She examined the page.

"Yes.""

I looked closer.

There was a handwritten note beside it.

Transfer control before the next annual review.

The date was from six years earlier.

"What's the annual review?""

"Could be a trust or corporate governance review. We'll need to investigate.""

I felt my stomach tighten.

Then Lauren noticed another document.

It was a letter from Anthony Moretti's estate attorney.

The letter referenced a succession provision that required certain assets to remain under family control until Emma reached adulthood.

Lauren read it twice.

"Claire, this may explain why Vincent is suddenly trying to locate his daughter.""

"Because she's eighteen?""

"Possibly. The timing is interesting.""

She photographed the letter.

Then she looked at me.

"We need the full trust agreement.""

I nodded.

Before we left, Margaret arranged for a courier to collect the documents under formal supervision.

I kept copies of everything.

By the time we reached the parking lot, my phone had accumulated eleven missed calls.

Nine from Vincent.

One from his mother.

And one from an unknown number.

I opened the messages.

Vincent's latest read:

Claire, whatever Evelyn told you, don't believe her. She's been confused for years.

Then:

We need to talk about the property.

Then:

I know you have the documents.

I showed Lauren.

She shook her head.

"Don't reply.""

I put the phone away.

But as we reached the car, another message appeared.

This one was from Sophia.

It came from a new number.

You have no idea what you're getting yourself into.

I stopped walking.

Lauren looked at me.

"What?""

I showed her.

She read the message.

"Save it. Don't respond.""

I stared at the screen.

Then another message arrived.

Rebecca made the same mistake. She thought she could fight Vincent.

I felt my hands tighten.

I typed three words before Lauren could stop me.

I'm not Rebecca.

Then I blocked the number.

Lauren gave me a look.

"Claire.""

"I know. I shouldn't have replied.""

"Correct.""

"But I needed her to understand something.""

"What?""

I looked toward the road.

"That I'm not going anywhere.""

When I arrived home, Vincent's car was already in the driveway.

I considered turning around.

But this was my house too.

I had paid half the deposit.

I had helped renovate it.

I had chosen the kitchen cabinets and spent weekends painting the guest bedroom.

I wasn't going to surrender it because my husband had decided he preferred another woman.

I walked inside.

Vincent was standing in the living room.

His jacket was draped over the sofa, and his phone was in his hand.

He looked at me immediately.

"Where have you been?""

I placed my purse on the console.

"Out.""

"With my mother?""

I didn't answer.

He laughed bitterly.

"Unbelievable.""

I walked toward the kitchen.

He followed.

"Claire, this needs to stop.""

I turned.

"What needs to stop?""

"You digging into things that don't concern you.""

I stared at him.

"The property is in my name too.""

"Not everything is as simple as you think.""

"Then explain it.""

He rubbed his forehead.

"You're not understanding the business arrangements.""

"Then explain them in plain English.""

He looked frustrated.

"Mercer Avenue is part of a larger restructuring. Sophia's company is helping us manage the transition.""

"Why is my ownership being transferred?""

"Because it's more efficient.""

"For whom?""

"For everyone.""

"Not for me.""

He sighed.

"Claire, you don't understand how these things work.""

I almost laughed.

"I helped build that property portfolio.""

"You helped with paperwork.""

I stared at him.

There it was.

The dismissal.

The same man who had once introduced me to investors as the reason his business was growing now wanted to reduce my work to paperwork.

"Is that what you tell Sophia?""

He stiffened.

"Don't bring her into this.""

"She's already in it. Her company is listed as the recipient.""

He walked toward the kitchen island.

"Look, I made a mistake with Sophia. I admit that.""

"An affair?""

"Yes.""

"And the money?""

He stopped.

"What money?""

"The four hundred and eighty thousand dollars transferred to her company.""

His expression changed.

For the first time, I saw genuine fear.

Then he recovered.

"Those are legitimate consulting payments.""

"Where are the contracts?""

"In the company records.""

"Where are the service reports?""

"Ask the accountants.""

"Who approved them?""

He stared at me.

I leaned forward.

"Vincent, I know about the payments to SR Consulting going back years. I know about the emails with Rebecca. I know about the proposed transfer of my property.""

His face went pale.

He looked at me as though I had suddenly become someone he didn't recognize.

"Where did you get that information?""

"Does it matter?""

"Yes!""

He slammed his palm against the counter.

"Those documents are confidential!""

I didn't flinch.

"Then you should have kept them out of my name.""

He stepped closer.

"Listen carefully. You have no idea what you're interfering with.""

"Then tell me.""

"Stay away from Rebecca's family.""

I went still.

"Why?""

He looked at me.

And for the first time, he didn't even attempt to deny knowing what I was talking about.

"Because this has nothing to do with you.""

I stared at him.

"Your daughter has nothing to do with me?""

His expression collapsed.

The silence that followed was deafening.

I watched his eyes move toward the hallway.

Then he whispered:

"Who told you about Emma?""

I folded my arms.

"Your first wife.""

He looked furious.

"Rebecca has no right to involve you.""

"She has every right to tell the truth.""

"You don't understand what she did.""

"Then explain it.""

He shook his head.

"She destroyed my life.""

I almost laughed.

"By having your daughter?""

His face twisted.

"She took things that belonged to my family.""

"What things?""

"Assets. Money. Control.""

"Wasn't the money supposed to belong to Emma?""

He looked away.

That was enough.

I took a step back.

"Did you try to take your daughter's inheritance?""

He didn't answer.

Instead, he walked to the living room and picked up his jacket.

"We're not having this conversation.""

"Of course not.""

He turned.

"Claire, I'm trying to protect you.""

I stared at him.

"From what?""

"From people who will use you.""

I thought about Sophia's message.

Rebecca made the same mistake.

I looked at my husband.

"Vincent, the only person who has been using me is standing in my kitchen.""

He grabbed his keys.

"You're going to regret this.""

Then he left.

The front door slammed.

I stood there for several minutes.

Then I called Lauren.

"He's confirmed Emma exists.""

"Did he admit anything about the trust?""

"He said Rebecca took assets and money. He didn't deny that he tried to gain control.""

"Did he threaten you?""

"He said I'd regret this.""

Lauren sighed.

"Write down exactly what happened while you remember it. Don't embellish anything. We need a clear record.""

I did.

Then I went upstairs.

At 6:30, an email arrived from Margaret Ellis.

Subject:

*Rebecca — Urgent Update.*

I opened it.

Claire, I have spoken with Rebecca. She is willing to meet you, but she wants to do so privately and with attorneys present.

I read the next paragraph.

There is a new development. Someone attempted to access Emma's trust records this afternoon using Vincent's old authorization.

My heart began pounding.

Then came the final sentence.

Rebecca believes Vincent knows Emma is preparing to claim her inheritance, and he may try to reach her before the legal restrictions are put in place.

I immediately forwarded the email to Lauren.

Then I noticed an attachment.

A recent photograph.

A young woman stood outside a university building, carrying a backpack and holding a coffee.

She had dark hair.

Vincent's eyes.

And the same crescent-shaped dimple in her left cheek.

I stared at her face.

Underneath the photograph was a name.

*Emma Moretti.*

I zoomed in.

Then my phone rang.

An unknown number.

I answered.

A young woman's voice spoke hesitantly.

"Hello? Is this Claire?""

"Yes. Who is this?""

"My name is Emma.""

I stopped breathing.

She continued.

"My mother told me you're married to my father.""

I gripped the edge of the desk.

"Yes.""

There was a long silence.

Then Emma whispered:

"I need to ask you something, and I need you to tell me the truth.""

"Of course.""

"Did my father really bring Sophia Reynolds to your wedding anniversary dinner?""

I closed my eyes.

"Yes.""

Emma let out a shaky breath.

"Then I think I know what he's planning.""

"What do you mean?""

Her voice dropped.

"Claire, my father contacted me yesterday. He said he wanted to make things right after all these years.""

I felt cold.

"What did he ask you?""

"To sign some documents.""

"What documents?""

She hesitated.

Then she said:

"Documents giving him control of my inheritance.""

My hand tightened around the phone.

"Emma, don't sign anything.""

"I haven't.""

"Good. Please don't meet him alone.""

"I won't.""

Then she whispered something that made my heart stop.

"There's something else. He told me that if I refused, he'd make sure neither of us ever saw a dollar from the Moretti estate.""

I stared at the photograph on my screen.

"Neither of us?""

Emma's voice trembled.

"He said you had already agreed to help him.""

I felt the blood drain from my face.

Because Vincent wasn't just trying to take my property.

He was telling his daughter that I was part of his plan.

And somehow, he had decided to use my name to get her signature.

Then Emma added:

"Claire, I have a copy of the document he wants me to sign.""

"Can you send it to my attorney?""

"Yes. But there's a problem.""

"What problem?""

She took a shaky breath.

"The document says that my mother is dead.""

I froze.

"What?""

Emma whispered:

"My father is trying to have Rebecca declared legally incompetent to manage her affairs.""

And suddenly, I understood why Vincent was so desperate to find his daughter.

May you like

He wasn't simply chasing an inheritance.

He was trying to remove the last person who could stop him.
