Chapter 8: The Man Behind The Plan

The voice on the phone disappeared.

But the damage was already done.

Eric stood frozen.

The phone remained in his hand.

“Who was that?””

He didn’t answer.

“Eric.””

He looked at me.

“I don’t know.””

I almost laughed.

“You don’t know the person threatening me?””

“No.””

“Then why did he say you were planning something?””

His face changed.

Because he knew exactly what I meant.

“I need to think.””

“No.””

I stepped closer.

“You need to talk.””

He sat down slowly.

“I met him once.””

“Who?””

“My mother introduced us.””

“Name.””

He swallowed.

“Victor.””

I waited.

“Victor Hale.””

The name meant nothing to me.

But Eric’s reaction told me it should.

“Who is he?””

“He’s an investor.””

“Investor in what?””

Eric looked uncomfortable.

“Mom’s company.””

I crossed my arms.

“So Diane didn’t just have a plan.””

“No.””

“She had help.””

“Yes.””

I walked away.

The betrayal felt endless.

Every time I thought I had reached the bottom, there was another hidden floor beneath it.

“Why didn’t you tell me?””

“Because I was ashamed.””

I turned around.

“Shame doesn’t excuse deception.””

“I know.””

“You keep saying that after the damage is done.””

He lowered his head.

And for the first time, I saw something different.

Not guilt.

Fear.

“What did Victor want?””

Eric looked up.

“He wanted the house.””

I stared.

“What?””

“He said your property was valuable.””

“That’s impossible.””

“He knew about the neighborhood development.””

I froze.

Because I did know.

A major company had been buying properties nearby.

My house was in an area expected to increase dramatically in value.

But that was public information.

“Why would he need me?””

Eric looked away.

“Because the house wasn’t accessible without you.””

My heart sank.

They weren’t trying to own my house.

They were trying to control the person who owned it.

Me.

That night, Eric and I searched through every document we could find.

Emails.

Messages.

Old files.

Then we found something.

A message between Diane and Victor.

A message Eric had never seen.

It was dated two months before he asked his mother to move in.

The message was simple.

“Once Claire leaves, Eric will handle the rest.””

I stared at the screen.

Once Claire leaves.

Not if.

Once.

They had already decided.

Eric sat beside me.

“I didn’t know.””

I looked at him.

“Didn’t you?””

He shook his head.

“I thought Mom just wanted help.””

“And when she told me to leave?””

His face fell.

“I was wrong.””

“No.””

I closed the laptop.

“You were useful.””

That sentence hurt him.

But it was true.

The next day, we reported the financial documents to an investigator.

Rebecca helped organize everything.

The power of attorney.

The loan agreement.

The suspicious transfers.

The messages.

Everything.

For the first time, Diane wasn’t controlling the story.

The truth was.

Three days later, I received an email.

No sender name.

No subject.

Only one attachment.

A photograph.

I opened it.

My hands started shaking.

It was a picture of my house.

Taken from across the street.

Taken before Diane moved in.

Before Eric betrayed me.

The date was six months earlier.

And in the corner of the photograph was a person standing outside my gate.

Watching.

I zoomed in.

My breath caught.

Because I knew that person.

It wasn’t Diane.

It wasn’t Victor.

It wasn’t Eric.

It was someone I trusted.

Someone who had been inside my house.

Someone who had helped me build it.

May you like

And underneath the photo was one sentence.

“Ask your husband why he never told you about your sister.””
