Chapter 3: The House That Betrayed Them
When I pulled into the driveway, something felt different.
The house looked the same.
The flowers were still blooming.
The curtains were still hanging.
But the feeling was gone.
This wasn’t a home anymore.
It was a battlefield.
Eric opened the door before I knocked.
He looked terrible.
His shirt was wrinkled. His eyes were tired.
For a moment, I almost felt sorry for him.
Almost.
“Claire.””
I walked inside.
Diane was sitting at my kitchen table.
She didn’t look as confident as she did the night before.
Kyle was pacing nearby.
“What happened?”” I asked.
Nobody answered.
Finally, Eric said:
“The bank froze the account.””
I frowned.
“What account?””
“Our joint account.””
Interesting.
“Why?””
“They said there was suspicious activity.””
I looked at him.
“And?””
Eric swallowed.
“And they need verification.””
I placed my handbag on the counter.
“Verification from who?””
His silence told me.
“Me?””
“Yes.””
I almost smiled.
Diane stood up.
“This is ridiculous.””
I looked at her.
“Is it?””
She pointed at me.
“You’re enjoying this.””
“No.””
I shook my head.
“I’m watching consequences.””
Kyle rolled his eyes.
“You’re seriously acting like we did something wrong?””
I turned toward him.
“You destroyed my office.””
“It was just a room.””
“It was my work.””
He shrugged.
“Whatever.””
Eric stepped between us.
“Enough.””
I looked at him.
“Are you finally going to say that to your family?””
His face fell.
Because he knew.
He had spent years avoiding conflict.
And now the conflict was standing in his own house.
Diane crossed her arms.
“You need to stop being dramatic and help your husband.””
I laughed quietly.
“My husband told me to sleep in a hotel.””
Eric looked away.
“That wasn’t what I meant.””
“It was exactly what you meant.””
The room became silent.
Then Diane said something that confirmed everything.
“You forget, Claire. Without Eric, you wouldn’t have this life.””
I stared at her.
Then slowly pulled a folder from my bag.
“What did you say?””
She froze.
“I said you owe my son.””
I opened the folder.
“No.””
I placed a document on the table.
“I don’t.””
Eric looked down.
“What is that?””
“Something you should have read years ago.””
He picked it up.
His expression changed.
“What is this?””
“The property records.””
Diane leaned forward.
“Meaning?””
I looked directly at her.
“Meaning this house belongs to me.””
Nobody spoke.
Then Eric laughed nervously.
“That’s impossible.””
“No.””
I shook my head.
“It’s paperwork.””
He scanned the page again.
“But we’re married.””
“Yes.””
“So I own part of it.””
“No.””
His face changed.
“Claire.””
“You never purchased this home. You never paid the mortgage. You never signed ownership papers.””
Diane’s mouth opened.
“That’s not fair.””
I looked at her.
“Neither was moving into my home behind my back.””
Eric lowered the paper.
“You hid this from me?””
I stared at him.
“I protected myself from you.””
That sentence hurt him.
I could see it.
But it was true.
Then Kyle suddenly laughed.
“So what? You think you can just throw us out?””
I looked at him.
“Yes.””
His smile disappeared.
I picked up my folder.
“But I’m not done yet.””
Eric frowned.
“What else?””
I looked at the staircase.
Then at the cameras installed around the house.
“The footage.””
His expression changed.
“What footage?””
I smiled.
“The footage showing who entered my office.””
The room went completely still.
Because they all knew.
The truth was no longer hidden.
And then Diane whispered:
“Delete those videos.””
I turned toward her.
May you like
“I already saved copies.””
Her face went pale.
