Chapter 8: The Promise That Changed Everything
My father didn’t speak.
That scared me more than anything Daniel had said.
Because Daniel was a master of manipulation.
He twisted words.
He created confusion.
He wanted people to question reality.
But my father was different.
My father was the person who always had an answer.
The person who taught me that silence could reveal more than words.
And now he was silent because he was afraid.
“Dad.””
He looked at me.
I waited.
“What did you promise James Holloway?””
His eyes closed.
For a moment, he looked like he was back twenty years ago.
Not in our dining room.
Somewhere else.
Somewhere painful.
“I promised him I would protect his family.””
The answer was quiet.
But it hit me hard.
“Did you?””
Dad looked away.
“No.””
The honesty hurt.
My mother reached for his hand.
“Frank…”
He shook his head.
“No. She deserves the truth.””
He turned toward me.
“James was my closest friend.””
I sat down.
“Tell me what happened.””
Dad took a deep breath.
“The night James died, we were investigating Daniel’s father, Richard Mercer.””
The name felt strange.
A person connected to the man I married.
A person I had never heard about.
“We believed Richard was moving money through several companies,” Dad continued.
“What kind of companies?””
“Fake businesses. Shell organizations.””
Thomas nodded.
“I remember the case.””
Dad looked at him.
“Most people do.””
Thomas looked uncomfortable.
“Because it ended badly.””
Dad continued.
“James found evidence that someone inside law enforcement was helping Richard.””
“Who?””
“We didn’t know.””
“Then what happened?””
Dad stared at the table.
“James found out.””
The room went quiet.
“How?””
“He followed a money trail.””
Dad’s voice became heavier.
“He discovered someone had been warning Richard before every investigation.””
My heart raced.
“And then?””
“He called me.””
Dad paused.
“It was the last conversation we ever had.””
I swallowed.
“What did he say?””
Dad looked at me.
“He said he had proof.””
“Proof of what?””
“That someone had been protecting Richard Mercer for years.””
My phone sat on the table.
Silent.
But I could almost feel Daniel watching.
“What does this have to do with him?””
Dad’s face tightened.
“Everything.””
I waited.
“Because Daniel was there that night.””
My breath stopped.
“What?””
“He wasn’t supposed to be.””
My mother looked shocked.
“Frank…”
“I didn’t know he would be there.””
Dad looked at me.
“Daniel was twenty-three. He had found out we were investigating his father.””
“And?””
“He believed we were trying to destroy his family.””
I shook my head.
“But he was protecting a criminal?””
“He didn’t see it that way.””
Dad’s voice became sad.
“He saw himself as the son who had to defend his father.””
I thought about Daniel’s video.
Justice.
That was the word he used.
He really believed it.
That was what made him dangerous.
“Did he hurt James?””
Dad didn’t answer.
Thomas did.
“No.””
Everyone looked at him.
Thomas continued.
“There was never evidence Daniel directly caused James’s death.””
I felt slightly relieved.
But then Thomas added:
“But Daniel knew something.””
Dad nodded.
“He knew who was responsible.””
“Who?””
Dad looked at me.
“The person who leaked information.””
I whispered:
“Who?””
Dad’s face became painful.
“I never found out.””
My phone buzzed.
A message.
From Daniel.
*You’re asking the wrong questions.*
I stared at it.
Then another message appeared.
*Ask your father why he protected the person who killed his partner.*
The room went silent.
My father looked at the screen.
And I saw something change.
Anger.
Not fear.
Anger.
“Daniel is lying.””
“Then tell me why.””
Dad looked at me.
“I didn’t protect anyone.””
“Then what happened?””
He looked down.
“After James died, the evidence pointed toward someone close to the investigation.””
“Who?””
Dad hesitated.
Then:
“My supervisor.””
Thomas nodded slowly.
“That’s why the case disappeared.””
I looked between them.
“So Daniel believes you covered it up.””
“Yes.””
“But did you?””
“No.””
Dad’s answer was immediate.
Strong.
I believed him.
But there was still something missing.
“What promise did you make James?””
Dad looked at me.
“I promised him I would take care of his daughter.””
A strange feeling moved through me.
“His daughter?””
Dad nodded.
“She was sixteen.””
“What happened to her?””
Dad’s face changed.
“She disappeared.””
My blood ran cold.
“What?””
“After James died, she left town.””
“Why?””
“Because she believed someone was watching her.””
My phone buzzed again.
This time, a photograph.
A young girl.
Sixteen years old.
Standing beside James Holloway.
I looked at the caption.
*She was never missing.*
Below it:
*She was hidden.*
I looked up.
“Who sent this?””
Nobody knew.
Then my phone rang.
Unknown number.
I answered.
A woman spoke.
Her voice was older.
Tired.
But familiar.
“Claire?””
My heart jumped.
“Who is this?””
A pause.
Then:
“My name is Emily Holloway.””
Everyone froze.
My father stood so quickly the chair moved backward.
“Emily?””
The woman started crying.
“Yes, Frank.””
My father grabbed the phone.
“Emily, where have you been?””
Her voice broke.
“Hiding.””
“From who?””
A long silence.
Then:
“From Daniel.””
My grip tightened.
“How do you know Daniel?””
Emily answered:
“Because I was there when he became the person he is now.””
My father looked at me.
“What does that mean?””
Emily took a shaky breath.
“It means Daniel didn’t start hurting women because of his relationships.””
A pause.
“He started after my father died.””
I felt cold.
“What happened?””
“Daniel blamed everyone around him.””
“Everyone?””
“Yes.””
“Why?””
“Because he needed someone to blame.””
My father sat down slowly.
Emily continued.
“And when he found out Frank Bennett had a daughter…”
Nobody spoke.
“He decided that was the perfect way to make Frank suffer.””
My stomach turned.
I already knew what she would say next.
But hearing it still hurt.
“He didn’t fall in love with you, Claire.””
A tear slipped down my cheek.
“He selected you.””
The word felt brutal.
Selected.
Not loved.
Not chosen.
Selected.
Emily continued.
“He studied your life.””
“How?””
“Through your father.””
I looked at Dad.
“Did you know?””
“No.””
Emily answered before him.
“Your father didn’t know.””
I felt a strange relief.
Small.
But real.
“Then why didn’t you tell me earlier?””
Emily’s voice broke.
“Because Daniel found me before I could.””
My heart stopped.
“What?””
“He threatened my family.””
The room became silent.
“He told me if I spoke, he would destroy everyone connected to me.””
My father stood.
“Where are you now?””
Emily hesitated.
“Close.””
“Close where?””
Another pause.
Then:
“Claire.””
“Yes?””
“Look outside.””
I froze.
Everyone turned toward the window.
Slowly.
Carefully.
I walked closer.
The street outside was dark.
Empty.
At first, I saw nothing.
Then headlights appeared.
A car parked across the road.
My heart began pounding.
Because I recognized it.
Daniel’s car.
And then my phone received one final message.
A photo.
Taken from inside the car.
A picture of me standing by the window.
May you like
The caption underneath was simple.
*I told you I was watching.*
