Chapter 3: The Pattern Hidden In The Shadows

The photograph on my phone made my blood run cold.

I stared at it again and again, hoping my eyes were making a mistake.

They weren’t.

The woman standing in the picture wasn’t wearing my exact wedding ring.

But she was wearing a ring identical to mine.

Same silver band.

Same small diamond.

Same design Daniel had insisted on choosing himself.

The caption underneath was only three words.

*Before Melissa Carter.*

I looked up at my father.

“Dad…”

He took the phone from my hand.

His expression changed slowly as he studied the image.

My mother moved closer.

“What is it?””

Dad didn’t answer immediately.

That scared me more than anything.

My father was not a man who panicked.

He had walked into dangerous situations for decades. He had dealt with people at their worst. He had taught others how to remain calm when everything around them was falling apart.

But now, looking at that photograph, his face had gone completely still.

“Frank?”” my mother whispered.

He handed her the phone.

“Claire needs to know everything.””

I swallowed.

“Everything about what?””

Dad looked at me.

“About the possibility that Daniel has done this before.””

The words hit harder than I expected.

Because some small part of me had still been hoping there was an explanation.

A misunderstanding.

A missing piece.

Something that would make the nightmare less real.

But every new detail made the same picture clearer.

Daniel wasn’t a man who made one mistake.

He was a man who repeated patterns.

My mother sat down slowly.

“Who sent the picture?””

“I don’t know,” I said.

Dad picked up his phone.

“We find out.””

I watched him type quickly.

Then I realized something.

“Dad.””

He looked up.

“What?””

“How did you know?””

A pause.

The room became quiet.

I noticed the way he avoided my eyes.

That bothered me.

“Know what?””

“That something was wrong.””

Dad sighed.

“I didn’t.””

“Then why did you come here?””

He looked toward the door Daniel had just walked through.

Then back at me.

“Because I received a message too.””

My stomach tightened.

“What message?””

Dad unlocked his phone.

There was a single text.

No number saved.

No name.

Just a sentence.

*Your daughter married the man I failed to stop.*

I felt the air leave my lungs.

“Who sent that?””

“I don’t know.””

Dad stared at the screen.

“But whoever it is knows Daniel.””

My mind raced.

A man I loved.

A man I shared my home with.

A man who knew exactly how to make me doubt myself.

How many people had warned me?

How many signs had I ignored?

I thought about Melissa.

Her bruises.

The court documents.

The fear in her eyes.

I grabbed my phone.

“I need to talk to her.””

Dad nodded.

“Do it carefully.””

I called the number.

It rang twice.

Then someone answered.

A woman’s voice.

“Hello?””

I froze.

“Melissa?””

Silence.

Then a shaky breath.

“Claire?””

The fact that she knew my name made my skin crawl.

“How do you know who I am?””

“I’ve been trying to reach you for months.””

“Months?””

“Yes.””

My grip tightened around the phone.

“Why?””

The woman hesitated.

Then whispered:

“Because Daniel chose you next.””

Nobody spoke.

The sentence hung in the air.

I looked at my parents.

My father’s face became serious.

“Put her on speaker.””

I did.

Melissa continued.

“I know this sounds crazy.””

“No,” I said quietly.

“It doesn’t.””

That seemed to surprise her.

“You believe me?””

“I found the folder.””

A long pause.

Then Melissa exhaled.

“Then you know.””

“I know some things.””

“You don’t know everything.””

My heart sank.

“What else is there?””

Melissa was quiet for several seconds.

Then she said:

“Daniel doesn’t keep trophies.””

I frowned.

“What?””

“He keeps evidence.””

My father leaned closer.

“What kind of evidence?””

“Things he uses against people.””

I remembered the folder.

The photographs.

The court documents.

The careful organization.

Melissa continued.

“When I left him, I thought the worst thing he could do was hurt me physically.””

Her voice cracked.

“I was wrong.””

“What did he do?””

“He destroyed my reputation.””

The room went silent.

“He told everyone I was unstable. He convinced my coworkers I was dangerous. He made my friends question me. He collected every argument we had and changed the story.””

I felt a chill.

Because I knew that method.

Daniel had spent years making me apologize for things I didn’t do.

“I thought it was just me,” Melissa said.

“It wasn’t.””

I closed my eyes.

“How many women?””

“I don’t know.””

That answer hurt.

Not because it surprised me.

Because it meant there were more.

“Claire,” Melissa said softly.

“Yes?””

“You need to leave before he realizes you know everything.””

“I already left.””

Another silence.

Then Melissa whispered:

“Good.””

My father looked at me.

“What happened after you left?””

I hesitated.

Then answered honestly.

“He threatened me.””

Melissa went quiet.

“What did he say?””

I repeated Daniel’s words.

You have no idea what you just started.

Melissa inhaled sharply.

“Claire.””

“What?””

“That’s what he said to me.””

The room froze.

My mother covered her mouth.

My father’s eyes hardened.

“Six years ago?””

“Yes.””

Melissa’s voice became quieter.

“Right before he destroyed my life.””

I sat down.

The world felt unreal.

The man who kissed me goodbye every morning.

The man who brought me flowers after arguments.

The man who told everyone he loved his wife.

He had used the same words.

The same threats.

The same script.

“How did you survive?”” I asked.

Melissa was quiet.

Then she answered:

“Someone helped me.””

“Who?””

“A woman named Rachel.””

My father looked at me.

“Rachel who?””

“I don’t know her last name.””

Melissa continued.

“She was Daniel’s girlfriend before me.””

My heart stopped.

“Girlfriend?””

“Yes.””

I felt confused.

“Before you?””

“Yes.””

“But the folder said you were his ex.””

“It did.””

“Then why did he have photographs of you?””

“Because Daniel collects stories where he is the victim.””

My father stood.

“Claire.””

I looked at him.

“What?””

“There’s something wrong.””

“What?””

He pointed toward my phone.

The call with Melissa was still connected.

But Melissa had stopped talking.

“Melissa?””

No response.

“Melissa?””

A faint sound came through the speaker.

A door opening.

Then a man’s voice.

A voice I recognized instantly.

Daniel.

My entire body went cold.

“Melissa,” he said.

“How many times do I have to tell you to stop interfering?””

My hand flew over my mouth.

Dad reached for the phone.

Daniel was there.

With her.

But that was impossible.

He had just left our house.

Unless…

The call wasn’t happening live.

A recording.

No.

Then Melissa screamed.

A real scream.

My father grabbed the phone.

“Melissa!””

The line went dead.

For several seconds, nobody moved.

Then my father spoke.

One sentence.

And I knew everything had changed.

“Claire, we need to find Melissa before Daniel does something he can’t take back.””

My phone buzzed.

A new message appeared.

Not from Melissa.

Not from an unknown number.

From Daniel.

A photo loaded slowly.

It was my house.

Taken from outside.

May you like

And underneath it were six words.

*You should have stayed quiet, Claire.*
