Chapter 7: The Game Daniel Had Been Playing
The video ended.
But nobody moved.
The words remained on the screen like a warning carved into stone.
*Chapter One was getting your daughter. Chapter Two is destroying you.*
I stared at those words until they stopped looking like text.
Until they became something else.
Proof.
Daniel had never seen our marriage as a relationship.
It was a mission.
A plan.
A way to punish my father.
My father took the phone from my hand and replayed the video.
This time, he watched every second without blinking.
The younger Daniel appeared again.
Confident.
Calm.
Almost charming.
That was the most terrifying part.
He didn’t look angry.
He looked patient.
Like someone who believed he had already won.
When the video ended, Dad placed the phone on the table.
“He recorded himself.””
My mother looked confused.
“Why would he do that?””
Dad stared at the screen.
“Because people like Daniel don’t believe they will lose.””
I looked at him.
“People like Daniel?””
Dad sighed.
“People who believe they are smarter than everyone around them.””
My hands shook slightly.
“How long?””
Dad looked at me.
“What?””
“How long did he plan this?””
Nobody answered.
And that silence told me more than words could.
I walked toward the table where Daniel’s folder sat.
I opened it again.
This time, I wasn’t looking at Melissa.
I wasn’t looking at Rachel.
I was looking for me.
The woman in his life before I even knew he existed.
I found it three pages later.
A printed article.
My father’s name.
A photograph of the academy.
And underneath it…
My name.
My childhood photograph.
I froze.
“Dad.””
He moved closer.
Then stopped.
Because he saw it too.
For a moment, the strongest man I knew looked completely powerless.
“He had this?””
My voice cracked.
“You knew?””
“No.””
Dad picked up the paper.
“No.””
I searched his face.
And I believed him.
Because my father was many things.
But he wasn’t a liar.
Not like Daniel.
Thomas Reed arrived twenty minutes later after Dad called him.
The moment he saw the documents, his expression changed.
“Where did he get these?””
“We don’t know,” Dad said.
Thomas looked through the papers.
“He had access to information about your family.””
“That’s impossible,” my mother said.
Thomas shook his head.
“Not impossible.””
He pointed to the article.
“Your husband was careful.””
I hated hearing that.
Because it was true.
Daniel was careful.
Every insult had a reasonable explanation.
Every controlling behavior had been disguised as concern.
Every apology came at exactly the right moment.
He wasn’t impulsive.
He was deliberate.
Thomas looked at me.
“Claire, did he ever ask unusual questions?””
I thought.
Then nodded.
“Yes.””
“What kind?””
“About my father.””
Thomas waited.
I continued.
“He asked about cases Dad worked on. People he arrested. Mistakes he made.””
Dad’s expression changed.
“What mistakes?””
I looked at him.
“He asked if you ever regretted anything.””
Thomas looked at Dad.
“That wasn’t curiosity.””
“No,” Dad said.
“It was research.””
My phone buzzed.
Everyone turned.
Another message.
From Daniel.
*You finally understand.*
My heart dropped.
He knew.
He knew we were reading everything.
Dad immediately said:
“Don’t respond.””
But another message came.
*Your father always taught you to look for evidence. So I left you evidence.*
A chill went through me.
“He wants us to find it.””
Thomas looked serious.
“That’s dangerous.””
“Why?””
“Because someone who wants to be caught usually wants control over the ending.””
I stared at the phone.
Daniel wasn’t running.
He was watching.
Waiting.
Like this was still his game.
Another message appeared.
*Claire, ask your father what happened to Officer James Holloway.*
My father went completely still.
The name meant something.
I saw it.
“Dad?””
He didn’t answer.
“Who is James Holloway?””
Thomas looked away.
That was worse.
Because now two people knew.
And neither wanted to speak.
“Tell me.””
Dad sat down.
“James was my partner.””
My stomach tightened.
“What happened to him?””
Dad looked at the floor.
“He died.””
The room became quiet.
“When?””
“Twenty years ago.””
“How?””
Dad hesitated.
“During an investigation.””
I looked at the message again.
“Why would Daniel bring him up?””
Nobody answered.
Then Thomas spoke.
“Because Daniel knows that case.””
My father looked up.
“What?””
Thomas looked uncomfortable.
“Frank, you need to tell her.””
Dad shook his head.
“There’s nothing to tell.””
Thomas’s voice hardened.
“That’s not true.””
I looked between them.
“What aren’t you telling me?””
Dad stood.
“Claire…”
“No.””
My voice became firmer.
“Not this time.””
I pointed at the documents.
“I spent two years married to a man who controlled every part of my life because I kept believing people would tell me the truth.””
I looked at my father.
“I need the truth now.””
The room was silent.
Finally, Dad spoke.
“James died because of a mistake I made.””
My heart sank.
“What mistake?””
“During an investigation, we were tracking someone dangerous.””
“Who?””
Dad looked at the papers.
“Someone connected to Daniel’s family.””
I froze.
“What?””
Thomas stepped forward.
“Daniel’s father.””
The name hit harder than expected.
I had never met Daniel’s father.
He always said they were estranged.
That he had no family influence.
That he built himself alone.
Another lie.
“My father investigated him?”” Daniel had asked.
“No.””
Dad corrected.
“We investigated him.””
“What did he do?””
Dad looked at me.
“He was involved in illegal financial operations.””
“Did you arrest him?””
“No.””
“Why?””
“Because the evidence disappeared.””
My stomach turned.
“Disappeared?””
“Yes.””
Dad’s voice became quieter.
“Someone inside the department leaked information.””
“And James?””
Dad closed his eyes.
“He discovered who it was.””
I waited.
“Then he was killed.””
The room went silent.
I felt cold.
“Are you saying Daniel blamed you for his father?””
“No.””
Dad shook his head.
“I’m saying Daniel blamed me for everything.””
My phone buzzed again.
A video message.
This time, from Daniel.
I opened it.
His face appeared.
Not angry.
Not threatening.
Almost calm.
“Claire.””
Hearing his voice made my chest tighten.
“I know you’re with your father.””
I looked at Dad.
Daniel continued.
“I know you’re learning things about me.””
He smiled slightly.
“But you still don’t know the most important part.””
The video moved closer.
Daniel looked directly into the camera.
“Your father thinks I wanted revenge.””
A pause.
“He’s wrong.””
My breathing stopped.
“Revenge is emotional.””
Daniel smiled.
“This was about justice.””
I felt disgusted.
Because that was exactly how he justified everything.
He continued.
“I didn’t destroy your marriage, Claire.””
A pause.
“Your father destroyed it before it ever started.””
The video ended.
Nobody spoke.
Then a final message appeared.
One sentence.
*Ask your father what he promised James Holloway the night he died.*
I looked at my father.
And for the second time that night…
I saw fear in his eyes.
May you like
Not fear of Daniel.
Fear of the truth.
