Chapter 6: The Signature That Wasn’t Mine

The document shook in my hands.

Not because I was weak.

Not because I was scared.

Because suddenly every strange moment from the past six months was connecting into one terrifying picture.

The missing money.

The secret meetings.

The house paperwork.

The frozen bank account.

The woman standing in front of me with proof that my husband had been building another life.

And the worst part?

I had been helping him build it.

I had defended him.

I had covered for him.

I had told people he was stressed.

I had told myself marriage was difficult sometimes.

I had convinced myself that love meant giving someone more chances.

But Daniel hadn’t been asking for chances.

He had been using them.

“Who is this company?”” I asked.

My voice was calm.

Too calm.

Daniel noticed.

I saw it in his eyes.

The fear.

The same fear he had when the attorney mentioned the property transfer.

“Claire, give me that.””

He reached for the paper.

I pulled it back.

“No.””

“Listen to me.””

“No.””

I stared at him.

“You don’t get to take things from me anymore.””

That sentence seemed to hit him.

Because for the first time, he looked like he understood.

I wasn’t the woman begging for answers anymore.

I was the woman collecting evidence.

Vanessa looked at Daniel.

“You should have told her the truth.””

Daniel’s jaw tightened.

“You don’t know what you’re talking about.””

She gave him a cold smile.

“I know enough.””

Patricia stepped forward.

“This is ridiculous.””

I looked at her.

“You knew about everything.””

She shook her head.

“I knew Daniel was struggling.””

“No.””

I held up the document.

“You knew about the house.””

She stayed silent.

“You knew about Vanessa.””

Silence.

“You knew about the money.””

Her eyes narrowed.

“Careful, Claire.””

There it was again.

That warning.

That quiet threat.

I looked at her differently now.

For years, I thought Patricia was simply difficult.

Cold.

Controlling.

But now I understood.

She wasn’t difficult.

She was strategic.

She didn’t explode.

She didn’t need to.

She moved pieces around and let other people suffer.

“Careful with what?””

I stepped closer.

“With asking questions?””

Patricia looked at Daniel.

“Your wife is emotional.””

I laughed.

“No.””

I looked directly at her.

“Your son taught you that word, didn’t he?””

Daniel looked away.

Because he knew.

Every time I questioned something, they used the same excuse.

I was emotional.

I was dramatic.

I was overreacting.

Anything to avoid answering.

Vanessa opened another page from the folder.

“There’s more.””

Daniel immediately turned toward her.

“Stop.””

She ignored him.

“There are payment records.””

She looked at me.

“Your husband sent money to a private consultant.””

I frowned.

“For what?””

Vanessa hesitated.

“To prepare documents.””

My stomach tightened.

“What kind of documents?””

Nobody answered.

So I looked at Daniel.

“What kind of documents?””

He rubbed his face.

“Claire, I was trying to protect myself.””

“From me?””

“No.””

“Then from who?””

His silence told me.

I already knew.

From me.

From the woman he married.

From the person whose name was on the house.

From the person who could stop him.

I looked at Vanessa.

“You said someone helped make my signature disappear.””

She nodded.

“Yes.””

“Who?””

Her eyes moved toward Patricia.

I froze.

“No.””

Vanessa didn’t look away.

“Your mother-in-law knew someone who could handle paperwork quietly.””

Patricia’s expression changed.

“That’s a lie.””

Vanessa pulled out another document.

“Then explain this.””

She handed it over.

I looked down.

A name.

An office.

A payment.

And Patricia’s signature.

My hands went cold.

I looked up.

“Why?””

Patricia remained silent.

Then she sighed.

Like she was tired of pretending.

“Because someone had to think about the future.””

I stared at her.

“The future?””

“Yes.””

She looked at my stomach.

“At that baby.””

The anger that rose inside me was immediate.

“Don’t use my child to justify what you did.””

“I’m protecting my grandchild.””

“No.””

My voice sharpened.

“You’re protecting your son.””

Patricia looked offended.

“You don’t understand family.””

I shook my head.

“No.””

I looked around.

“I understand family perfectly.””

I pointed at Daniel.

“A husband protects his wife.””

Then Patricia.

“A mother teaches her son right from wrong.””

Then I touched my stomach.

“And family doesn’t secretly destroy one person to benefit everyone else.””

Nobody spoke.

Even Mark looked away.

Then Daniel said quietly:

“Claire, can we talk alone?””

I looked at him.

“Why?””

“Because this is between us.””

I almost smiled.

“Between us?””

I held up the documents.

“You brought your mother into our house.””

I held up the folder.

“You brought another woman into our marriage.””

I held up the bank records.

“You brought strangers into our finances.””

I looked at him.

“There hasn’t been an ‘us’ for a long time.””

That hurt him.

I could see it.

But I couldn’t feel sorry anymore.

Not yet.

Maybe not ever.

My phone rang again.

I looked down.

It was Linda.

I answered immediately.

“Hello?””

“Mrs. Bennett, I’ve reviewed the documents more carefully.””

I walked a few steps away.

“What did you find?””

Her voice became serious.

“The signature issue is worse than I initially thought.””

My heart sank.

“How?””

“The document wasn’t simply signed incorrectly.””

I waited.

“It appears someone attempted to create a power of attorney.””

I stopped walking.

“A power of attorney?””

“Yes.””

“What does that mean?””

“It means someone tried to give another person legal authority to make decisions on your behalf.””

My eyes moved toward Daniel.

Then Patricia.

“Who?””

Linda paused.

“According to the paperwork, the authority was assigned to Patricia Bennett.””

I closed my eyes.

My own mother-in-law.

The woman who smiled at me during baby showers.

The woman who held my hand at the hospital.

The woman who called me “daughter.””

She had been trying to control my life.

“Can she do that?””

“No.””

Linda’s answer was immediate.

“Not without your consent.””

I looked at the documents.

“Then how did she try?””

“That’s what we need to investigate.””

I swallowed.

“Linda?””

“Yes?””

“What should I do?””

There was a pause.

Then she said:

“First, do not go back inside the house alone.””

I looked toward the place I once called home.

“Why?””

“Because if someone was willing to forge your signature…”

Her voice lowered.

“You need to consider what else they might be willing to do.””

A cold chill moved through me.

I ended the call.

When I turned around, Daniel was watching me.

“You’re leaving.””

It wasn’t a question.

I looked at him.

“Yes.””

His face changed.

“Claire.””

“No.””

“You’re seven months pregnant.””

I nodded.

“I know.””

“You need me.””

Those words almost made me laugh.

Because they would have worked yesterday.

Maybe even this morning.

But not anymore.

“No, Daniel.””

I looked at the man I had loved.

“I needed you when I was pushing your mother’s car uphill with an injured knee.””

His face fell.

“I needed you when I was bleeding.””

I stepped closer.

“I needed you when I was scared.””

My voice broke slightly.

“But you weren’t there.””

I looked at Vanessa.

Then Patricia.

Then back at him.

“You were all there.””

I turned away.

And that was when Mark suddenly spoke.

“Claire.””

I stopped.

He looked terrified.

“What?””

He hesitated.

Then he said:

“There’s something else you need to know.””

Daniel immediately turned toward him.

“Mark.””

But Mark didn’t stop.

“About the day you hurt your knee.””

My heartbeat increased.

“What about it?””

Mark swallowed.

“Your fall wasn’t the first time Daniel released that brake.””

The world went silent.

I slowly turned around.

“What did you say?””

Mark looked at Daniel.

Then at me.

“I saw him do it before.””

Daniel’s face changed.

May you like

And for the first time all day…

He looked truly afraid.
