Chapter 3: The House That Was Never Mine
I stared at the unfamiliar number flashing on my phone.
For some reason, nobody moved.
Not Daniel.
Not Patricia.
Not Mark.
It was as if all three of them knew something I didn’t.
And that terrified me more than the affair.
Because cheating was a betrayal.
But secrets involving a house, money, and my unborn child felt like something much bigger.
I answered.
“Hello?””
For a moment, there was only silence.
Then a woman’s voice spoke.
“Is this Claire Bennett?””
My grip tightened around the phone.
“Yes.””
“My name is Linda Harper. I’m calling from Bennett & Harper Legal Services.””
My eyes moved toward Daniel.
His face had gone completely pale.
“Why are you calling me?””
The woman hesitated.
“Mrs. Bennett, I’m sorry to contact you this way, but we’ve been trying to reach your husband for several days.””
I looked at Daniel.
“About what?””
Another pause.
“About the transfer of ownership documents.””
My heart sank.
“Ownership of what?””
Nobody answered.
Then Linda said:
“The house.””
The world around me became strangely quiet.
I looked at the home behind us.
The large two-story house where I had spent the last three years.
The house I painted.
The house where I decorated the nursery.
The house where I thought my baby would take his first steps.
“The house?”” I repeated.
“Yes,” Linda said carefully.
“There seems to be a misunderstanding regarding the property agreement.””
I felt my throat tighten.
“What misunderstanding?””
I looked directly at Daniel.
He looked away.
That was enough.
“Mrs. Bennett,” Linda continued, “are you aware that your husband signed paperwork removing your name from the property documents?””
My breath stopped.
For several seconds, I couldn’t speak.
Then I whispered:
“What?””
Daniel stepped forward.
“Claire, let me explain.””
I pulled the phone away from my ear.
“No.””
My voice was shaking.
“No, you don’t get to explain after I hear it from someone else.””
Patricia stepped out of the passenger side.
“Claire, calm down.””
I turned toward her.
“Did you know?””
She didn’t answer immediately.
That was all the answer I needed.
“You knew.””
Patricia sighed.
“Daniel was trying to protect the family.””
I stared at her.
“Protect the family?””
I laughed.
A cold, empty laugh.
“He removed me from my own home while I was pregnant.””
“It wasn’t like that.””
“Then explain it.””
Nobody spoke.
Daniel finally stepped closer.
“Claire, listen. The house belonged to my family before we got married.””
I blinked.
“What?””
“My parents helped with the down payment.””
I looked at Patricia.
She nodded.
“Yes.””
The pieces started connecting.
Slowly.
Painfully.
“When did this happen?””
Daniel looked down.
“A few months ago.””
A few months ago.
The same time he started acting distant.
The same time money disappeared.
The same time Vanessa entered his life.
I pressed the phone against my ear again.
“Linda, can you tell me exactly what paperwork was signed?””
There was a pause.
“According to our records, your husband transferred his ownership interest into a family trust.””
My stomach twisted.
“A family trust?””
“Yes.””
“Who controls the trust?””
Another pause.
Then:
“Patricia Bennett.””
I looked at my mother-in-law.
She didn’t even look ashamed.
Instead, she looked relieved.
Like the truth coming out was just an inconvenience.
“You put the house in your mother’s name?””
I looked at Daniel.
His voice became defensive.
“It’s temporary.””
“Temporary?””
“Yes. We were having financial issues.””
I stared at him.
“Our financial issues?””
He looked away.
“Claire.””
“No.””
I stepped closer.
“You spent our fuel money on another woman.””
His face tightened.
“You don’t understand.””
“And then you secretly moved our house into your mother’s control.””
“It was for protection.””
“Protection from what?””
He didn’t answer.
Because there was no good answer.
The woman on the phone spoke again.
“Mrs. Bennett, there’s something else you should know.””
My heart sank.
“What?””
“The documents were signed shortly after your husband applied for additional credit.””
Daniel immediately interrupted.
“Linda, that’s not necessary.””
The attorney went silent.
I looked at him.
“What credit?””
Daniel said nothing.
“What credit, Daniel?””
He rubbed his face.
“I was trying to fix things.””
“Fix what?””
“Our situation.””
I shook my head.
“No. Tell me the truth.””
The silence stretched.
Finally, he said:
“I borrowed money.””
“How much?””
He hesitated.
That hesitation made my stomach drop.
“How much?””
“Forty thousand dollars.””
I felt dizzy.
“Forty thousand?””
“It wasn’t supposed to become a problem.””
I looked around.
At the house.
At the driveway.
At the people who had been making decisions about my life without me.
“You borrowed forty thousand dollars while I was pregnant?””
“I was going to pay it back.””
“With what?””
He had no answer.
Then Mark suddenly spoke from behind him.
“Daniel, maybe you should tell her everything.””
Everyone turned toward him.
Daniel’s expression changed.
“Shut up.””
Mark swallowed.
“No.””
For the first time that morning, Mark didn’t look amused.
He looked guilty.
“I should have said something earlier.””
Daniel stepped toward him.
“Don’t.””
But Mark continued.
“She deserves to know.””
My heart started pounding.
“Know what?””
Mark looked at me.
“About Vanessa.””
Daniel’s face changed.
“I already know about Vanessa.””
“No,” Mark said quietly.
“You know about the girlfriend.””
A cold feeling moved through me.
“What does that mean?””
Mark looked at Daniel.
Then back at me.
“It wasn’t just an affair.””
The road suddenly felt unstable beneath my feet.
“What are you saying?””
Daniel’s voice became sharp.
“Mark.””
But Mark kept going.
“She wasn’t just someone he met.””
I stared at him.
“What does that mean?””
Mark looked uncomfortable.
“Vanessa helped him with the loan.””
I froze.
“The loan?””
Mark nodded slowly.
“She knew about the house.””
I looked at Daniel.
“Why would she know about our house?””
Daniel didn’t speak.
That silence destroyed the last piece of trust I had left.
Because he wasn’t just hiding a woman.
He was hiding a plan.
Linda’s voice came through the phone.
“Mrs. Bennett, I recommend that you do not sign anything your husband gives you.””
My fingers tightened around the phone.
“Why would I need to sign anything?””
Another pause.
Then she answered:
“Because according to the documents filed yesterday, your husband is preparing to finalize the transfer of the remaining assets.””
I felt my blood run cold.
“Remaining assets?””
“Yes.””
“What assets?””
Linda hesitated.
Then:
“Your joint savings account.””
I looked at Daniel.
The man I married.
The father of my child.
The person who promised we would build a future together.
And suddenly I wondered if he had been planning a future.
Just not with me.
Daniel took a step forward.
“Claire, please.””
I backed away.
“No.””
“Let me explain.””
“No.””
My voice cracked.
“You had enough time.””
The phone remained pressed to my ear.
Linda spoke softly.
“Mrs. Bennett, there’s one more thing.””
I closed my eyes.
“What?””
“The person who requested the asset transfer…”
She paused.
“Was not your husband.””
I opened my eyes.
Daniel looked terrified.
“Then who was it?””
The attorney answered:
“It was submitted by your mother-in-law.””
I slowly turned toward Patricia.
May you like
And for the first time that day…
She looked afraid.
