Chapter 5: The Woman Holding My Husband’s Promise
For a moment, nobody moved.
Vanessa stood at the end of the driveway holding a thick folder against her chest.
She wasn’t angry.
She wasn’t nervous.
She looked almost calm.
That scared me more than if she had arrived screaming.
Because people who walk into someone else’s life holding documents usually know exactly what they’re doing.
Daniel took a step forward.
“Vanessa, what are you doing here?””
Her eyes moved to him.
Not me.
Him.
“I’m fixing the situation you created.””
Daniel’s face tightened.
“You need to leave.””
Vanessa gave a small smile.
“That’s interesting.””
“What?””
“You used to tell me I would never have to hide.””
My stomach turned.
Daniel immediately looked at me.
“Claire, don’t listen to her.””
Vanessa looked at me then.
And somehow, that was worse.
There was no cruelty in her expression.
Only pity.
“I’m sorry you had to find out like this.””
I stared at her.
“You’re sorry?””
She nodded.
“Yes.””
I looked at the folder.
“What’s inside?””
Daniel stepped between us.
“Nothing.””
Vanessa laughed softly.
“Nothing?””
She looked at him.
“Daniel, after everything, you’re still going to lie?””
His face became angry.
“Not here.””
“Why?””
She tilted her head.
“Because your wife is finally here?””
The words hit hard.
Finally.
Like everyone else had been part of a conversation except me.
I looked at Daniel.
“How long have you been planning this?””
“Claire—”
“How long?””
He looked away.
Vanessa answered.
“Almost six months.””
My chest tightened.
Six months.
Half of my pregnancy.
Half of the time I had been buying baby clothes and choosing names.
Half of the time I thought my husband was stressed because he was preparing for our future.
He wasn’t.
He was preparing a future without me.
I looked at Daniel.
“You said you loved me.””
He swallowed.
“I do.””
The answer came too quickly.
Vanessa looked at him.
Even she seemed disappointed.
“You really don’t know when to stop lying.””
Daniel snapped.
“You don’t understand.””
“No,” she said quietly.
“I understand perfectly.””
Patricia stepped forward.
“This conversation is inappropriate.””
Vanessa looked at her.
“Actually, Patricia, I think this conversation is long overdue.””
The way she said my mother-in-law’s name made me notice something.
They weren’t strangers.
They knew each other.
“You know her?””
I asked.
Patricia didn’t answer.
Vanessa smiled.
“Yes.””
My stomach sank.
“How?””
Vanessa looked at Daniel.
“Tell her.””
Daniel stayed silent.
“Tell her what?””
Still nothing.
Vanessa opened the folder.
“Your husband introduced me to his mother before he introduced me to you.””
I felt the air leave my lungs.
“No.””
Daniel immediately shook his head.
“That’s not true.””
Vanessa pulled out a photograph.
She walked closer and held it out.
I didn’t want to take it.
But I did.
The picture showed Daniel.
Patricia.
And Vanessa.
Standing together at a restaurant.
All three smiling.
The date was printed in the corner.
Seven months earlier.
Before I knew anything.
Before I suspected anything.
Before I thought my marriage was falling apart.
I looked at Patricia.
She looked away.
“You knew.””
My voice was barely a whisper.
Patricia sighed.
“Claire…”
“No.””
I held up the picture.
“You knew her.””
She crossed her arms.
“I knew Daniel was unhappy.””
My eyes widened.
“So you helped him?””
“No.””
Vanessa interrupted.
“Yes.””
Everyone looked at her.
Vanessa’s expression hardened.
“She did.””
Patricia glared.
“Be careful.””
Vanessa laughed.
“Is that what you told me when you asked me to wait?””
I froze.
“Wait?””
Vanessa looked at Daniel.
“Tell her.””
Daniel looked trapped.
“Vanessa.””
“No.””
She shook her head.
“I’m done protecting you.””
She turned toward me.
“Daniel told me he was leaving you.””
My hands became cold.
“He said your marriage was already over.””
Daniel immediately spoke.
“I never said that.””
Vanessa looked at him.
“You did.””
“No.””
“You told me your wife only stayed because of the baby.””
My eyes filled with tears.
I looked at Daniel.
“Did you say that?””
He didn’t answer.
And once again, silence was the truth.
Vanessa continued.
“He told me once the house was transferred and the money situation was fixed, he would file for divorce.””
The word landed like a punch.
Divorce.
I looked at my husband.
“When?””
Daniel rubbed his face.
“I was confused.””
“When?””
He finally said:
“After the baby was born.””
Everything inside me went numb.
He had planned to wait.
Wait until I gave birth.
Wait until I was recovering.
Wait until I was more vulnerable.
I laughed softly.
Not because it was funny.
Because I didn’t know what else to do.
“You were going to leave me after I gave birth?””
“Claire, I didn’t know what I wanted.””
“No.””
I shook my head.
“You knew exactly what you wanted.””
I pointed at the folder.
“That’s why she’s here.””
Vanessa looked down.
“I didn’t come here to hurt you.””
I looked at her.
“Then why?””
She hesitated.
Then she handed me the folder.
“Because I found out something.””
I opened it.
Inside were copies of emails.
Bank records.
Property documents.
My hands trembled as I flipped through them.
The first page was an email.
From Daniel.
To Vanessa.
The subject line made my heart stop.
*Once Claire signs, everything will be easier.*
I looked at the date.
Three months earlier.
I read the message.
My mother will handle the house. Claire doesn’t understand finances. Once everything is secured, I can finally move forward.
My vision blurred.
I looked at Daniel.
“You wrote this.””
He stepped forward.
“Claire, you don’t understand the context.””
I laughed.
“The context?””
I held up the paper.
“You called me a problem.””
“No.””
“You said I didn’t understand finances.””
“Because you didn’t.””
The moment the words left his mouth, he realized his mistake.
Everyone went silent.
Because he had finally admitted it.
Not everything.
But enough.
I closed the folder.
“You never saw me as your wife.””
“That’s not true.””
“You saw me as something standing between you and what you wanted.””
Daniel’s expression softened.
“Claire, I made mistakes.””
I looked at him.
“You keep saying that.””
Then I turned to Vanessa.
“Why are you giving me this?””
Her face changed.
For the first time, she looked genuinely hurt.
“Because he lied to me too.””
Nobody spoke.
She looked at Daniel.
“He promised me the same things he promised you.””
My eyes moved between them.
“What?””
Vanessa swallowed.
“He told me he would leave you.””
Daniel shook his head.
“Vanessa.””
“He told me the house would be ours.””
Patricia suddenly looked alarmed.
“What?””
Vanessa turned toward her.
“Yes.””
The driveway became silent.
Even Patricia looked shocked.
I stared at Daniel.
“You promised her this house?””
He looked trapped.
“I was trying to figure things out.””
“No.””
My voice was quiet.
“You were trying to replace me.””
The baby moved inside me.
I placed my hand over my stomach.
A reminder of the only person in this world who had never lied to me.
Then Vanessa reached into the folder and pulled out one final document.
Her expression changed.
“This is why I came.””
She handed it to me.
I looked down.
It was a bank transfer.
A large one.
My eyes widened.
Because the recipient name wasn’t Vanessa.
It wasn’t Patricia.
It wasn’t Daniel.
It was a company.
And the date was the day before.
I looked at her.
“What is this?””
Vanessa took a deep breath.
“Something Daniel doesn’t know I found.””
Daniel’s face changed.
“What?””
She looked at me.
“Your husband didn’t spend all the money on me.””
A cold feeling moved through my body.
“Then where did it go?””
Vanessa pointed at the document.
“To someone who was supposed to make your signature disappear.””
I looked at Daniel.
Then Patricia.
Neither of them spoke.
And that was when I knew.
The woman I thought was my enemy had just handed me the weapon I needed.
Because this was never only about cheating.
May you like
Someone had tried to erase me completely.
And Vanessa had just revealed the person who helped them do it.
