Chapter 9: The Last Lie Everyone Told Me
The photograph on my phone felt heavier than the device itself.
I stared at it.
Again.
And again.
Daniel standing behind me.
Inside my house.
At the exact moment I received the warning.
*Claire, run. Daniel was never your ally.*
My mind refused to process it.
Not because it was impossible.
Because it was possible.
And that was the worst part.
I had spent the entire night discovering that every person I trusted had hidden something from me.
My husband.
My father.
My sister-in-law.
The people who had shaped my entire life.
So why should Daniel be different?
Why should he be the exception?
I slowly lowered the phone.
Everyone noticed my expression.
Adrian stepped forward.
“What happened?””
I didn’t answer.
“Claire.””
His voice softened.
For a moment, I almost wanted to trust him.
Almost.
Then I remembered the first lie.
The first secret.
The first time he looked into my eyes and promised forever while knowing he had entered my life with another purpose.
I turned the phone toward him.
He looked at the picture.
And his face changed.
Not surprise.
Recognition.
My stomach dropped.
“You know.””
Adrian looked at me.
“I know Daniel was involved.””
The room went silent.
I laughed quietly.
Of course.
Of course he knew.
“Everyone knows everything except me.””
“Claire—”
“No.””
I stepped back.
“You don’t get to explain anymore.””
Adrian stopped.
Marcus watched us with a satisfied expression.
Like he was enjoying seeing everyone fall apart.
I hated him.
But I hated something else more.
The fact that he had been right about one thing.
Everyone was hiding something.
My father looked at the phone.
“Who sent that?””
“Does it matter?””
“Yes.””
I looked at him.
“Why?””
“Because if Daniel is involved, then we are in more danger than we thought.””
I stared at him.
“You mean you didn’t know?””
My father looked away.
That answer hurt.
Again.
Natalie walked closer.
“Claire, you need to understand something.””
I turned.
“I don’t need another warning.””
Her expression hardened.
“I’m not warning you.””
“Then what?””
“I’m telling you that Daniel has been playing both sides.””
I looked at her.
“And you know this how?””
She hesitated.
That tiny pause told me everything.
“You knew.””
Natalie sighed.
“Yes.””
My anger exploded.
“You all knew!””
My voice echoed through the room.
“You knew people were lying to me. You knew my husband had secrets. You knew my identity was being used. You knew Daniel was dangerous.””
I pointed at them.
“And every single one of you decided I couldn’t handle the truth.””
Nobody spoke.
Because nobody could deny it.
I grabbed my coat.
“I’m leaving.””
Adrian immediately moved.
“Where?””
“Away from here.””
“You can’t.””
I stopped.
Slowly turned.
“What did you say?””
His face changed.
“I mean it’s not safe.””
“No.””
I shook my head.
“You mean you don’t trust me to make my own decisions.””
“That’s not what I mean.””
“It’s exactly what you mean.””
I walked toward the door.
My father stepped in front of me.
“Claire.””
I looked at him.
“I spent my whole life believing you were the person who would never lie to me.””
Pain crossed his face.
“I was trying to protect you.””
“And you failed.””
The words hurt both of us.
But they were true.
I opened the door.
And froze.
Because standing outside was Daniel.
His face was pale.
His breathing was heavy.
He looked like he had been running.
Everyone in the room went silent.
Daniel looked at me.
“Claire.””
I stared at him.
“You have exactly one chance.””
His expression changed.
“What?””
“To tell me the truth.””
He swallowed.
Behind him, Marcus smiled.
Interesting.
Like he was waiting.
Daniel looked around the room.
Then back at me.
“I can explain.””
I laughed.
“That’s what everyone says.””
“Claire, please.””
“No.””
I stepped closer.
“Were you the one who created Blackwood Holdings?””
Daniel’s face changed.
A second.
That was all.
But I saw it.
“No.””
“Were you the one who forged my signature?””
“No.””
“Were you working with Marcus?””
Silence.
A terrible silence.
Then Daniel said:
“I was working against him.””
I almost believed him.
Almost.
Until he added:
“But I was also working against Adrian.””
The room exploded.
“What does that mean?”” I demanded.
Daniel looked at Adrian.
“He didn’t tell you.””
Adrian’s expression darkened.
“Daniel.””
“No.””
Daniel looked at me.
“You deserve to know.””
My heart pounded.
“Know what?””
Daniel took a breath.
“Adrian didn’t just discover Marcus was looking for the ledger.””
I waited.
“He discovered the ledger was never hidden.””
My eyebrows tightened.
“What?””
Daniel looked at my father.
“It was found years ago.””
My father went completely still.
I turned.
“Dad?””
He didn’t answer.
Daniel continued.
“Richard found it after your mother died.””
My father’s face collapsed.
“Stop.””
“No.””
Daniel’s voice became stronger.
“Claire deserves the truth.””
I looked at my father.
“You found it?””
A long silence.
Then:
“Yes.””
My chest tightened.
“What did you do with it?””
My father looked at the floor.
“I destroyed it.””
The words were impossible.
“What?””
“I destroyed the ledger.””
I stared.
“Then why is everyone still searching for it?””
My father looked at me.
“Because I lied.””
Nobody moved.
“I didn’t destroy it.””
My voice became quiet.
“Where is it?””
He looked at me.
And I knew before he spoke.
“No.””
I whispered.
“Don’t.””
My father’s eyes filled with tears.
“It’s inside the trust.””
My entire body froze.
The ledger.
The evidence.
The thing everyone had spent twenty-five years searching for.
Was still there.
All along.
My identity wasn’t the key.
I was the vault.
Adrian stepped closer.
“Claire.””
I turned toward him.
“You knew.””
His expression broke.
“I suspected.””
“You knew enough.””
“I was trying to keep you safe.””
I looked at him.
“No.””
I shook my head.
“You were trying to keep the ledger safe.””
“That’s not true.””
“Then why didn’t you tell me?””
No answer.
Because there wasn’t one.
Daniel stepped forward.
“That’s why I came to you.””
I looked at him.
“Why?””
“Because Adrian wasn’t the only one looking for it.””
My blood ran cold.
“Who else?””
Daniel looked toward Marcus.
Then at Natalie.
Then at my father.
“The person who has been manipulating everyone…”
He paused.
“Is not Marcus.””
The room became silent.
Marcus frowned.
“What are you saying?””
Daniel pulled out his phone.
“I found the original transfer records.””
He held it up.
“The money wasn’t stolen by Marcus.””
Everyone stared.
“Then who?””
Daniel looked at me.
“The person who created Blackwood Holdings.””
My heart stopped.
“No.””
Daniel nodded.
“I’m sorry.””
He opened the file.
A name appeared.
A name I knew.
A name I never thought I would see.
*Richard Bennett.*
My father.
The man who raised me.
The man who told me monsters existed outside our family.
The man who spent my entire life protecting me.
I looked at him.
“Dad?””
He closed his eyes.
And whispered:
“I can explain.””
But before he could say another word, the lights went out again.
A gunshot exploded through the darkness.
Everyone screamed.
When the emergency lights came on, Marcus was on the floor.
Blood spread across his shirt.
And standing behind him…
May you like
Holding the weapon…
Was Daniel.
