Chapter 3: The Person Behind The Signature

The words hung in the room long after Daniel stopped speaking.

The person who framed you is someone you trust.

I wanted to reject it.

Immediately.

I wanted to laugh and tell him he was wrong.

Because there were certain things the human mind refused to accept.

A stranger hurting you was painful.

A person you loved hurting you was devastating.

But someone you trusted?

Someone you welcomed into your home?

Someone who knew your routines, your fears, your dreams?

That was something else entirely.

That was a betrayal that reached deeper.

I stared at Daniel.

“Who?””

He didn’t answer.

That scared me more than if he had.

“Daniel.””

His eyes moved toward the office window.

The blinds were partially open, showing the city lights outside.

“Before I say anything, you need to understand something.””

“What?””

“Adrian is not the only person who has been lying to you.””

My stomach tightened.

“Then tell me who it is.””

Daniel rubbed his hands together nervously.

I had never seen him like that.

Daniel Brooks was the type of man who always looked prepared.

Perfect suit.

Perfect posture.

Perfect answer for every question.

For years, he had been the person who stood beside Adrian during interviews and business meetings, quietly fixing problems before anyone noticed.

But tonight, he looked terrified.

“I need to know why you came here,” I said.

His expression changed.

“What?””

“You didn’t walk into this office because you suddenly developed a conscience.””

Silence.

I stepped closer.

“You knew about the account.””

Daniel looked down.

“Yes.””

“When?””

My heart sank.

“A year?””

He nodded slowly.

“I found irregular transfers while reviewing foundation expenses.””

I felt something inside me crack.

“You knew my husband was moving millions of dollars and you said nothing?””

Daniel looked ashamed.

“I didn’t know what it was at first.””

“But you knew something was wrong.””

“Yes.””

“And you let me keep standing beside him.””

His jaw tightened.

“Claire…”

“No.””

My voice rose.

“You watched me organize those events. You watched me smile for cameras. You watched me defend this foundation while money was disappearing.””

Daniel looked away.

“I was trying to protect you.””

I laughed.

A bitter, broken laugh.

“Protect me?””

I pointed at the documents.

“You protected me by letting me unknowingly become part of a crime?””

His face fell.

That told me everything.

He knew.

He knew this was bigger than an affair.

Bigger than a divorce.

Bigger than a ruined reputation.

Emily stood beside me.

“Claire, let him explain.””

I looked at her.

“Why?””

“Because he came here tonight.””

Daniel nodded.

“She’s right.””

He reached into his pocket and pulled out his phone.

“I should have told you months ago.””

He unlocked the screen and showed me a photograph.

A meeting.

A parking garage.

Adrian standing beside another man.

I recognized the location immediately.

The underground garage beneath Vale Tower.

“When was this taken?””

“Six months ago.””

I looked closer.

The man standing with Adrian was older.

Gray hair.

Expensive coat.

A face I had seen before.

“Marcus Vale.””

My voice became quiet.

Daniel nodded.

Adrian’s father.

The founder of the Vale empire.

A man who had supposedly retired three years ago.

A man whose name still carried enormous influence.

“Why was Adrian meeting him secretly?””

Daniel hesitated.

“Because Marcus never really retired.””

I looked at him.

“What does that mean?””

“It means he still controls more than people realize.””

I walked back to the desk.

My thoughts were racing.

Marcus Vale had always intimidated me.

Not because he was cruel to me.

He was actually polite.

Almost too polite.

That was what bothered me.

Whenever I visited the Vale family estate, he smiled warmly and asked about my charity work.

He called me “the heart of the foundation.””

But there had always been something cold behind his eyes.

Like he was studying me.

Like I was a piece on a chessboard.

“What does he have to do with the account?””

Daniel took a breath.

“I don’t know everything.””

I stared at him.

“Then what do you know?””

He looked at the flash drive.

“Everything I found is on there.””

I picked it up.

Small.

Simple.

Almost meaningless.

But inside it could be the reason my entire life had collapsed.

Emily looked at me.

“Should we open it?””

I nodded.

Daniel stopped me.

“Not here.””

“Why?””

“Because if Adrian discovers I gave you that, he’ll know exactly what information I have.””

I narrowed my eyes.

“And?””

Daniel looked at me.

“And people who threaten Adrian don’t usually get a second chance.””

The room went quiet.

I remembered Adrian’s face at the gala.

Not when I accused him.

Not when the reporters asked questions.

The moment he saw the envelope.

The moment he realized I knew something.

That wasn’t the face of a guilty husband afraid of exposure.

That was the face of someone afraid of losing control.

I looked at Daniel.

“Why are you helping me now?””

He didn’t answer immediately.

Finally, he said:

“Because I made a mistake.””

“What mistake?””

His eyes became heavy.

“I thought Adrian was trying to save the foundation.””

I waited.

“But he wasn’t.””

The words came slowly.

“He was trying to save himself.””

An hour later, I sat alone in my car outside my house.

The place that was supposed to feel like home suddenly looked unfamiliar.

The lights were on.

The garden was perfectly maintained.

The front door was exactly the same.

But everything had changed.

Because now I knew something I couldn’t forget.

A home built on lies was never really a home.

I stared at the steering wheel.

My phone buzzed.

Adrian.

I watched his name appear.

I didn’t answer.

A second later, another message came.

*We need to talk.*

I ignored it.

Another message.

*Please, Claire. Before you do something you regret.*

My fingers tightened around the phone.

Something I regret?

I almost responded.

Almost.

But then I saw the third message.

And everything inside me went cold.

*You need to ask Daniel why he deleted the original files.*

I froze.

My eyes moved back to the house.

How did Adrian know Daniel was with me?

Slowly, I looked at the rearview mirror.

A black SUV was parked across the street.

The lights were off.

The engine was running.

I had lived with Adrian for eight years.

I knew his habits.

I knew his cars.

And I knew that SUV.

It belonged to Vale Security.

Someone was watching my house.

Watching me.

My phone rang.

Unknown number.

I answered.

“Hello?””

For several seconds, nobody spoke.

Then a woman’s voice came through.

A voice I recognized.

“Claire.””

My blood ran cold.

“Vanessa?””

She exhaled softly.

“I know what you found.””

I gripped the phone.

“How?””

“Because I was there when Adrian created the account.””

I sat completely still.

“You’re lying.””

“I wish I was.””

The confidence in her voice disappeared.

“Claire, you think I’m your enemy.””

A pause.

“But I’m the only person who can prove what happened.””

I looked toward the SUV outside.

“What do you want?””

“I want to meet you.””

“Why?””

Her answer came immediately.

“Because tomorrow morning, Adrian is going to announce that you stole money from the foundation.””

My entire body went cold.

“What?””

“He already prepared the documents.””

I looked down at the papers beside me.

The forged signature.

The fake company.

The setup.

Vanessa continued.

“And when the police come for you…”

Her voice lowered.

“They won’t be looking for the woman who was betrayed.””

A pause.

“They’ll be looking for a criminal.””

The call ended.

I sat there in silence.

Then my phone buzzed again.

This time, it was an email.

From Adrian.

Subject:

*The Truth About Your Signature*

My hand hovered over the screen.

Because attached to the email was a single file.

A photograph.

A photograph of me signing the exact document that created Blackwood Holdings.

Except I had never signed it.

May you like

And beneath the image was one sentence from my husband.

*You should have asked me before you chose war.*
