Chapter 8: The Truth Adrian Buried
Natalie’s words cut through the room like a blade.
Not because they surprised me.
Because some part of me had already known.
The worst betrayals weren’t the ones that came from strangers.
They were the ones that came from people who knew exactly where to place the knife.
I stared at her.
My sister-in-law.
The woman who sat beside me during holidays.
The woman who cried with me when my marriage almost fell apart two years ago.
The woman who once told me, “You’re the only person who ever made Adrian softer.””
Now she stood beside the man who had spent decades destroying my family.
And she looked completely calm.
“Natalie,” I whispered.
She tilted her head.
“I know this is difficult.””
I almost laughed.
“Difficult?””
My voice echoed through the room.
“My husband used me. My father lied to me. Your family built a trap around my entire life.””
I pointed at her.
“And you think this is difficult?””
Her expression barely changed.
“I think you’re finally seeing the truth.””
“No.””
I shook my head.
“I’m seeing another person trying to control the story.””
Marcus smiled.
“She’s clever.””
Natalie looked at him.
“She always was.””
I hated the way they spoke about me.
Like I wasn’t standing there.
Like I was an object being discussed.
Adrian stepped forward.
“Enough.””
Everyone turned.
His voice was different.
Not angry.
Not defensive.
Desperate.
“Natalie, stop.””
She looked at him.
“You don’t get to tell me to stop.””
The room froze.
Because for the first time, someone spoke to Adrian without fear.
“I protected you for years.””
Adrian’s face tightened.
“And I protected you.””
Natalie laughed.
“Did you?””
She looked at me.
“Did he tell you?””
My stomach tightened.
“Tell me what?””
Adrian immediately said:
“Claire, don’t listen to her.””
That was it.
That was the moment.
Not Marcus.
Not Natalie.
Adrian.
Because he wasn’t denying it.
He was trying to stop me from hearing it.
I turned toward him.
“Why?””
His eyes met mine.
“Because she will twist it.””
Natalie smiled sadly.
“That’s what he always says.””
I looked at her.
“Then tell me.””
She was quiet.
“Tell me everything.””
Adrian moved closer.
“Claire.””
I stepped back.
“No.””
The word came out stronger than I expected.
“I spent eight years listening to you.””
My voice cracked.
“I defended you. I trusted you. I built your foundation beside you.””
I looked at Natalie.
“Now I want to hear someone else.””
Adrian stopped.
And somehow, that hurt more than anger would have.
Because he knew.
He knew he had lost the right to control the conversation.
Natalie walked toward the table.
She picked up the old documents.
“Adrian married you because Marcus believed the Blackwood access was hidden with you.””
I looked at Adrian.
He didn’t move.
Natalie continued.
“But that wasn’t the entire reason.””
My chest tightened.
“What else?””
She looked at her brother.
“Tell her.””
Adrian stayed silent.
Natalie’s expression hardened.
“Tell her about the hospital.””
My face changed.
“The hospital?””
Adrian looked away.
I felt sick.
“What hospital?””
Nobody answered.
Then Natalie said:
“Twenty-five years ago.””
She looked at me.
“The night your mother died.””
The room disappeared.
Everything became quiet.
My mother.
Again.
Always my mother.
“What does Adrian have to do with my mother?””
Adrian’s face changed.
A painful expression crossed it.
Not guilt.
Something worse.
Regret.
“I was a child.””
I stared.
“What?””
“I was fourteen.””
The words barely registered.
“You knew my mother?””
He nodded.
“My father took me with him when he met Richard.””
My father closed his eyes.
Adrian continued.
“Your mother found out what Marcus was doing.””
I looked at him.
“And?””
His voice became quieter.
“She was going to expose him.””
I waited.
“What happened?””
Adrian looked at the floor.
“She was followed.””
My heart stopped.
“No.””
My father stepped forward.
“Claire…”
“No.””
I looked between them.
“No. Don’t.””
But nobody listened.
Adrian’s voice broke.
“Marcus caused the accident.””
The room went completely silent.
My knees weakened.
My mother’s death.
The accident everyone called tragic.
The accident everyone told me was unavoidable.
Wasn’t an accident.
I grabbed the chair beside me.
“No.””
Adrian moved toward me.
“Claire.””
I pushed him away.
“Don’t touch me.””
He stopped.
Because he knew he deserved it.
My father looked devastated.
“You should have known.””
I looked at him.
“You knew?””
He nodded slowly.
“I suspected.””
The word destroyed me.
“You suspected?””
“I couldn’t prove it.””
“So you did nothing?””
My father looked away.
The answer was unbearable.
Natalie spoke softly.
“This is why Adrian married you.””
I turned.
“What?””
“Because he believed the truth about your mother was hidden with the Blackwood records.””
My heart shattered.
I looked at Adrian.
“Is that true?””
He didn’t answer.
I screamed:
“Is that true?””
His eyes filled with pain.
“Yes.””
One word.
One word that destroyed everything.
I stepped back.
“You spent eight years with me because of my mother.””
“No.””
The answer came immediately.
“I married you because of that.””
He paused.
“But I stayed because of you.””
I shook my head.
“Don’t.””
“Claire—”
“Don’t make this harder.””
He looked broken.
But I couldn’t care.
Not anymore.
Because even if his love had become real…
The beginning was still a lie.
Natalie placed a folder on the table.
“There’s more.””
I looked at her.
“Of course there is.””
She ignored the comment.
“Adrian discovered something six months ago.””
“What?””
She looked at him.
“He found out Marcus had been searching for the ledger because he knew it contained evidence against him.””
I waited.
“And?””
Natalie’s voice lowered.
“Adrian also discovered someone else had access to the records.””
My eyes narrowed.
“Who?””
She looked directly at me.
“Your father.””
I frowned.
“What?””
“He wasn’t protecting the ledger from Marcus.””
She turned toward Richard.
“He was protecting something else.””
My father looked away.
I felt anger rise again.
“What else?””
Nobody spoke.
Then Marcus stepped forward.
For the first time, his calm expression disappeared.
“Richard.””
My father looked at him.
“You promised.””
A terrible silence followed.
I looked at my father.
“What did you promise him?””
My father didn’t answer.
Marcus smiled.
“Ask him what happened the night your mother died.””
My father’s face went pale.
Adrian looked at him.
“Richard?””
My father’s hands shook.
“Claire…”
I felt my heart pounding.
“No.””
He looked at me.
“I didn’t want you to know this.””
“That’s everyone’s favorite sentence.””
A tear appeared in his eyes.
“Your mother wasn’t alone that night.””
I froze.
“What?””
“There was someone with her.””
“Who?””
My father looked at Adrian.
Then at Marcus.
Then finally at me.
“The person who caused the accident…”
His voice broke.
“Was trying to get the ledger.””
The room became silent.
I whispered:
“Who?””
My father looked down.
And said:
“It was someone from the Bennett family.””
The world stopped.
“What?””
My father couldn’t look at me.
“It was your uncle.””
My blood turned cold.
“My uncle?””
Marcus smiled.
Because he knew this was the moment he wanted.
“Yes.””
I stared at him.
“My uncle was involved?””
Marcus nodded.
“And he wasn’t working alone.””
A horrible feeling entered my chest.
I already knew where this was going.
I looked around the room.
At Adrian.
At Natalie.
At my father.
At Marcus.
Everyone had a secret.
Everyone had a reason.
Everyone had lied.
Then my phone vibrated.
Another message.
This time from Daniel.
I opened it.
And my blood ran cold.
A photograph appeared.
A photograph taken moments ago.
Of my house.
Of everyone inside.
But there was one detail that made my hands shake.
Daniel was in the picture.
Standing behind me.
May you like
And the message underneath said:
*Claire, run. Daniel was never your ally.*
