Chapter 3: The Boardroom Betrayal
The Morrison family had spent years teaching me one lesson.
They believed money gave people the right to disrespect anyone beneath them.
So I decided to teach them another.
Money disappeared quickly.
Consequences lasted longer.
The boardroom was silent.
Brendan stared at me as if I had become a stranger.
Maybe I had.
The woman he knew would apologize after being insulted was gone.
“Cassidy,” he said carefully, “we need to talk privately.””
I sat down.
“No.””
His eyebrows lowered.
“No?””
“No.””
Diane stepped forward.
“This is a family matter.””
I looked at her.
“You stopped being my family when you poured water on your pregnant granddaughter’s mother.””
Her lips parted.
For once, she had no response.
Jessica leaned toward Brendan.
“Don’t let her threaten us.””
I turned toward her.
“Threaten?””
I opened the file.
“Jessica Vaughn.””
She stiffened.
“Yes?””
“You received restricted company shares.””
Her expression changed.
“I don’t know what you’re talking about.””
“Your signature is on the transfer documents.””
Brendan looked at her.
“Jessica?””
She quickly turned.
“Brendan, she’s trying to blame me.””
I watched him.
Even then.
Even after everything.
He still wanted to believe her.
“Cassidy, explain.””
I almost smiled.
He wanted explanations.
After years of refusing to listen.
“Your girlfriend received company assets illegally.””
“She’s not my girlfriend.””
The room became quiet.
Jessica looked at him.
“What?””
Brendan swallowed.
“That’s not what I meant.””
Too late.
I saw the fear in her eyes.
The same fear that had been missing when she laughed at my soaked dress.
Diane grabbed the folder.
“You cannot do this.””
I looked at her.
“Actually, I can.””
She opened the pages.
Then froze.
Because there it was.
Every signature.
Every transaction.
Every attempt to move assets away from my control.
“You investigated us.””
“No.””
I leaned back.
“I protected myself.””
The meeting continued for hours.
Every excuse collapsed.
Brendan claimed he was protecting the family.
Diane claimed she misunderstood company ownership.
Jessica claimed she was manipulated.
Nobody accepted responsibility.
Finally, I stood.
“I’m done.””
Brendan looked desperate.
“Cassidy.””
I stopped.
“I loved you.””
The words almost hurt.
Almost.
“You loved the version of me you created.””
“That’s not true.””
“It is.””
I looked at him.
“You loved a woman who never challenged you.””
His face fell.
“And when you discovered I was stronger than you thought, you hated me.””
Nobody spoke.
I left the room.
Outside, Elena followed.
“Are you okay?””
I looked through the glass walls.
Employees were already hearing rumors.
The truth was spreading.
“I will be.””
That evening, I received another message.
From Protocol 7.
FINAL DISCOVERY FOUND.
I opened it.
My breathing stopped.
The document contained a hidden agreement.
Signed months before my divorce.
Brendan had not just cheated.
He had planned.
The message below was simple.
AUDIO RECORDING ATTACHED.
I pressed play.
Brendan’s voice filled the room.
“Once Cassidy signs the divorce papers, we move everything.””
Diane answered.
“And the baby?””
A pause.
Then Brendan said:
“She won’t have the company. She won’t have anything.””
My blood ran cold.
Because I finally understood.
They weren’t trying to leave me.
They were trying to erase me.
And then another voice appeared in the recording.
A voice I recognized immediately.
My own father’s former business partner.
A man who had disappeared ten years earlier.
He said:
“You don’t know who Cassidy really is.””
I stopped the recording.
May you like
Because suddenly I had a new question.
Who had known my secret all along?
