Chapter 2: The Woman Behind the Empire

The next morning, I woke up in my small apartment with a completely different life waiting for me.

At least, that was what the world believed.

To everyone outside a tiny circle of attorneys and financial advisors, I was still Cassidy Hale.

The abandoned wife.

The pregnant woman whose wealthy in-laws considered her an embarrassment.

But inside the company’s private system, I was something else.

Cassidy Hale.

Founder.

Owner.

Controlling shareholder.

The person who had built Morrison Global from a struggling technology firm into a billion-dollar empire.

I sat at my kitchen table, drinking tea while my daughter moved gently inside me.

“You have no idea what your mother did last night,” I whispered.

My phone buzzed.

A video call appeared.

My lawyer, Adrian Cole.

His expression was serious.

“Cassidy.””

“Adrian.””

“You look like you slept.””

“I didn’t.””

He sighed.

“You should be resting.””

“I will rest after I fix what they broke.””

Adrian opened a file.

“The investigation started immediately after Protocol 7 was activated.””

“And?””

He hesitated.

That was never a good sign.

“Your former husband transferred company shares.””

I froze.

“How many?””

“Enough to trigger concern.””

My fingers tightened around the cup.

“Who received them?””

Adrian looked at the screen.

“Jessica Vaughn.””

I laughed once.

Not because it was funny.

Because sometimes betrayal was so obvious that anger didn’t come fast enough.

“She was planning to marry into the company.””

Adrian nodded.

“Apparently.””

I stood and walked toward the window.

Outside, the city moved normally.

Cars.

People.

Coffee shops.

Nobody knew that one family’s entire fortune was about to collapse.

“Send me everything,” I said.

“Cassidy, are you sure?””

I looked at my reflection.

For years, I had hidden behind kindness.

I thought if I loved Brendan enough, he would remember the woman he married.

I thought patience would be rewarded.

I thought family meant something.

I was wrong.

“Send everything.””

That afternoon, I entered Morrison Global headquarters for the first time in months.

Not through the private executive entrance.

Through the front doors.

Employees turned.

Whispers spread.

Because everyone knew Cassidy.

But they knew a different Cassidy.

The quiet one.

The one who sat in the back during charity events.

The one Brendan introduced as “my wife” without mentioning anything else.

The elevator opened.

My assistant, Elena, was waiting.

The moment she saw me, her eyes filled with anger.

“Mrs. Hale.””

I smiled.

“Elena.””

She looked at my stomach.

“Are you alright?””

“I am now.””

She nodded.

“Good.””

We entered the executive floor.

The glass walls reflected the skyline.

My skyline.

My company.

My legacy.

Then the doors to the boardroom opened.

Brendan was inside.

Along with Diane.

And Jessica.

They turned around.

The shock on their faces was almost worth everything.

Brendan stood slowly.

“What are you doing here?””

I walked to the head chair.

The chair nobody questioned.

The chair reserved for the owner.

“I’m attending a board meeting.””

Diane laughed.

“This is ridiculous.””

I looked at her.

“Is it?””

Jessica crossed her arms.

“You don’t work here.””

I smiled.

“That’s where you’re wrong.””

I placed a folder on the table.

“My name has been on this company since the beginning.””

Silence.

Brendan stared.

“No.””

I opened the folder.

“Yes.””

Diane’s face changed.

“You expect us to believe that?””

Elena stepped forward.

“I can confirm Mrs. Hale’s identity.””

Jessica looked confused.

“Mrs. Hale?””

I watched the realization slowly spread.

Not enough.

Not yet.

I wanted them to understand completely.

I wanted them to feel the same shock I felt when they decided I was worthless.

Brendan shook his head.

“This is some kind of trick.””

“No,” I said.

“It’s the truth you never bothered to ask for.””

The boardroom doors opened.

Several executives entered.

They looked nervous.

One of them held a tablet.

“Mrs. Hale,” he said, “we completed the first phase of Protocol 7.””

Brendan looked at him.

“What protocol?””

Nobody answered.

Because they were looking at me.

The executive swallowed.

“Should we proceed with the asset freeze?””

Diane’s face went pale.

“Asset freeze?””

I picked up the tablet.

“Yes.””

Then I looked directly at Brendan.

“Because before I take back my company…”

May you like

I paused.

“…I need to know how much of it my own husband tried to steal.””
