Chapter 6: The Brother Elizabeth Never Mentioned

I didn't remember walking upstairs.

One moment, I was standing in the living room, trying to understand how my dead wife could have had a brother I'd never heard of. The next, I was in the bedroom, staring at Vanessa's open laptop while rain rattled against the windows.

The silver flash drive lay beside the keyboard.

"Open it," I said.

Vanessa stood near the door.

"Richard, please listen to me before you hear anything.""

"I've listened to you for six years.""

"I know.""

"No. You don't.""

I pointed at the laptop.

"Open it.""

She sat down and typed in her password. A folder appeared on the screen, containing dozens of audio files and scanned documents.

She clicked one labeled *MARCH 14 — MARTIN*.

A man's voice filled the room.

"Your husband will never agree to the transfer voluntarily," Martin said.

"He believes the house is his because his name is on the deed.""

Vanessa's recorded voice answered.

"Then we can't use the house.""

"Of course we can. We simply need the correct paperwork.""

"What if Richard challenges it?""

"By the time he understands what's happened, the transfer will already be complete.""

Another voice spoke.

A man's voice.

Low, calm, and unmistakably familiar in a way I couldn't explain.

"Martin, stop making this complicated. Richard signs whatever he believes will protect Maya. Give him a document that looks like a trust amendment, tell him it secures her future, and he'll sign it without asking questions.""

I froze.

The voice continued.

"Once the house is transferred, the debt becomes someone else's problem.""

Martin chuckled.

"And if he refuses?""

"Then we use the other records.""

The recording ended.

I stared at the laptop.

"Who was that?""

Vanessa's face had gone pale.

"Daniel.""

I turned toward her.

"How do you know?""

"Martin told me.""

"That isn't proof.""

"No, it isn't.""

I replayed the recording.

The voice sounded older than mine, smooth and controlled. There was a slight rasp at the end of certain words, as though the speaker had once suffered an injury to his throat.

I had heard that voice before.

I knew it.

But I couldn't place it.

"Why would Elizabeth's brother want to take my house?""

Vanessa shook her head.

"I don't know.""

"Why didn't Elizabeth ever mention him?""

"Because they were estranged.""

"Since when?""

"Long before she met you.""

I paced the room.

"How did you meet him?""

"Through Martin. He contacted me after the company investigation.""

"What did he want?""

"Records. He wanted copies of the documents Elizabeth had saved.""

"And you gave them to him?""

Vanessa looked down.

"Some of them.""

I stopped pacing.

"You helped him?""

"I thought he was trying to protect himself. He said Elizabeth had stolen company money and was planning to blame him.""

I stared at her.

"Did you believe him?""

"At first.""

"And later?""

"Later, I realized he was using me.""

She wiped her eyes.

"He knew about the debt. He knew about Claire. He knew everything I'd done. He said he'd help me disappear if I cooperated.""

"Disappear where?""

"I don't know. He said he'd arrange everything.""

I looked at the laptop again.

"Why are you telling me this now?""

"Because Martin came to the house. Because someone broke in. Because I think Daniel has decided he doesn't need me anymore.""

"Did you know someone would take the blue folder?""

"No.""

"Did you know about the camera?""

She hesitated.

"Yes.""

I felt my jaw tighten.

"You told me you didn't.""

"I know.""

"Why did you turn it away?""

She shook her head.

"I didn't turn it away.""

"Your device was used to change the settings.""

"Because I gave Daniel the administrator password.""

The admission landed with a dull finality.

"When?""

"Four months ago.""

"Why?""

"He said he needed to access the network to retrieve files from an old computer connected to the household account.""

I stared at her.

"You gave him access to our home security system?""

"I didn't know he would use it to disable the camera.""

"But you knew he had the password.""

"Yes.""

"Did you know he was watching us?""

She didn't answer.

I walked to the window and looked out at the driveway.

A black sedan sat across the street.

It had been there when I'd returned from the diner.

I had assumed it belonged to a neighbor.

Now I wasn't so sure.

"Is that his car?"" I asked.

Vanessa moved beside me and looked through the curtain.

The color drained from her face.

"Yes.""

I stepped away from the window.

"Call the police.""

She grabbed my arm.

"Don't.""

I stared at her.

"Are you out of your mind?""

"If Daniel sees police cars outside, he'll leave. We'll never find him.""

"That's exactly what I want.""

"No, Richard. You don't understand. If he leaves now, he'll take everything with him.""

"What does he have?""

Vanessa swallowed.

"The original records from the company investigation. The records that could prove what happened to Claire.""

I looked at the sedan again.

The driver's side window was dark. I couldn't see inside.

"Why would he still have those records after eleven years?""

"Because he never stopped using them.""

"Using them for what?""

She looked at me.

"To control people.""

I felt a coldness settle in my chest.

"How many people?""

"I don't know.""

"Vanessa.""

"At least three that I know of.""

I stared at her.

"Who?""

She hesitated.

"Martin. Me. And someone who worked for the bank.""

I thought of the withdrawals.

The device connected to the household network.

The missing footage.

"Someone at Maya's bank?""

Vanessa nodded.

"Daniel said he had a contact who could make certain transfers look legitimate. He said it was just a way to move money without attracting attention.""

"And you believed him?""

"I wanted to believe him.""

I laughed once, without humor.

"You wanted to believe the man who taught you how to steal from your own family.""

She lowered her head.

For a moment, I saw no defense in her face.

Only shame.

"I know what I've done," she whispered.

"I know you may never forgive me. But Maya is in danger, Richard. Daniel doesn't care about the house anymore. He cares about the evidence.""

I reached for my phone.

"I'm calling the police.""

Vanessa stepped aside.

This time, she didn't stop me.

I dialed the emergency number and explained that someone had broken into my home, stolen financial documents, and may have been monitoring our security system.

The dispatcher asked whether anyone was injured.

"No.""

"Is the suspect still at the property?""

I looked through the curtain.

The black sedan was gone.

"I don't know," I said.

"He was outside a moment ago.""

The dispatcher told me to remain inside and avoid confronting anyone.

I agreed.

When I ended the call, Vanessa was standing by the laptop with the flash drive in her hand.

"There is one more thing," she said.

I looked at her.

"Of course there is.""

She flinched but continued.

"The original records aren't in the house.""

"Where are they?""

"Storage unit 214.""

I reached into my pocket and pulled out the brass key Elizabeth had left me.

Vanessa stared at it.

Her mouth fell open.

"Where did you get that?""

"Elizabeth's letter.""

She took a step backward.

"She left you the key?""

"Yes.""

Vanessa pressed her fingers against her lips.

"Then she knew.""

"Knew what?""

"She knew Daniel was going to come back.""

I studied her face.

"Tell me everything.""

Vanessa sat on the edge of the bed.

"When Elizabeth was sick, Daniel contacted her. He said he wanted to reconcile. She refused to meet him.

He kept calling. He sent letters. He even came to the hospital once.""

I felt my throat tighten.

"Elizabeth never told me.""

"She didn't want you involved. She said he had a way of making people feel responsible for things they hadn't done.""

"Why did he want to see her?""

"To get the records.""

"What records?""

"The originals from the company investigation. Elizabeth had kept them in a safe place. She told me she had evidence that could prove Daniel had organized the unauthorized transfers.""

I stared at the key.

"Then why didn't she turn it over to the police?""

"She tried. But Daniel had contacts inside the company and at the bank. Every time she made progress, something happened.

A document disappeared. A witness changed their statement. An account was closed.""

I thought about Denise's account of the missing files.

The pattern was too consistent to ignore.

"Did Elizabeth ever tell you where the records were?""

Vanessa nodded.

"She told me once that she had a backup stored somewhere outside the house. She said nobody would find it unless they knew what the key opened.""

I looked at the brass tag.

*Storage 214.*

"Then we're going.""

Vanessa stood.

"I'll come with you.""

"No.""

"Richard—"

"You've lied to me about the money, the camera, the debt, and your connection to Daniel. You're not coming with me.""

Her eyes filled.

"If you go alone, he'll know.""

"How?""

"Because he watches the unit.""

I stared at her.

"How do you know that?""

She looked away.

"Because I went there three weeks ago.""

My pulse quickened.

"What did you see?""

"Daniel.""

"Was he alone?""

"No.""

"Who was with him?""

She closed her eyes.

"Claire.""

For a moment, the room seemed to lose all sound.

"You're telling me you saw your sister three weeks ago?""

Vanessa nodded.

"She was alive. She was standing beside him.""

"Why didn't you tell anyone?""

"Because Daniel said if I contacted the police, he'd make sure Claire disappeared again.""

I stared at her, struggling to understand.

"Did she speak to you?""

Vanessa shook her head.

"She looked at me. Then Daniel led her away.""

"Did she look frightened?""

"Yes.""

I took a breath.

"Then we need to find her.""

Vanessa reached for my hand.

"Richard, if we go to that storage unit, we may discover that Elizabeth's records implicate more than Daniel.""

I pulled my hand away.

"What does that mean?""

She looked at me with tears streaming down her face.

"It means Elizabeth wasn't just investigating him.""

She swallowed.

"She was investigating someone in your family, too.""

I felt a chill move through me.

"My family?""

Vanessa nodded.

"Someone who had access to your financial records long before I met you. Someone who helped Daniel understand how to move money without leaving a trace.""

I shook my head.

"No.""

"Richard—"

"No. Elizabeth's family had nothing to do with my finances.""

Vanessa's expression tightened.

"Then why was Daniel able to reproduce your signature?""

I had no answer.

She walked to the laptop and opened another file.

It contained a scanned document dated eleven years earlier.

The title read: *Authorization for Financial Representation.*

My name appeared beneath it.

So did the name of a person I had trusted for nearly twenty years.

My older brother, Thomas Bennett.

I stared at the document.

Thomas had helped me manage my finances after Elizabeth died. He'd reviewed insurance paperwork, advised me on investments, and even helped arrange the transfer of some of Elizabeth's assets.

He had been the one who recommended that I update my will.

The one who told me Vanessa seemed like a good woman.

The one who had assured me that the house was protected.

I looked at Vanessa.

"Did Thomas know about the debt?""

"Yes.""

"Did he know about the tuition money?""

She nodded.

"How long?""

"From the beginning.""

I felt my stomach turn.

"You're saying my brother knew you stole from Maya?""

Vanessa lowered her head.

"He told me how to access the household account.""

I stepped away from her.

For years, Thomas had been the person I called when I needed advice. He'd stood beside me at Elizabeth's funeral. He'd held Maya's hand when she cried. He'd promised me that I would never have to face another family crisis alone.

And now I was beginning to suspect that he had helped create one.

My phone rang.

Thomas's name appeared on the screen.

I answered without speaking.

"Richard," he said, his voice warm and familiar.

"I heard you've been asking questions about the house.""

I gripped the phone.

"Who told you?""

"Vanessa called me.""

I looked at her.

She shook her head frantically.

"I didn't call him," she mouthed.

Thomas continued.

"Listen to me. Whatever you've found, don't go to that storage unit.""

I felt the blood drain from my face.

"How do you know about the storage unit?""

Silence.

Then my brother sighed.

"Because I was there when Elizabeth put the records inside.""

I couldn't move.

May you like

Thomas's voice dropped.

"And if you open that box, Richard, you'll discover why your wife spent the last months of her life trying to protect you from me.""
