Chapter 5: The House That Wasn't Mine

For a moment, I thought I had misheard him.

Martin Shaw stood beside my coffee table as if he were discussing an overdue insurance payment. Behind him, the living room camera continued pointing toward the blank wall.

Vanessa remained halfway down the stairs, one hand gripping the banister.

I took the document from Martin.

"You're telling me Elizabeth transferred this house to a trust?""

"That's correct.""

"Without telling me?""

"She was under no obligation to discuss every legal arrangement with you.""

I unfolded the paper.

It was a photocopy of a property trust agreement. My name appeared on the first page. Elizabeth's name appeared beneath it, followed by a signature that looked genuine.

The document was dated six months before her death.

At the bottom of the first page, I saw the name of the trust's administrator.

Martin Shaw.

I looked up.

"You handled this?""

"I did.""

"Why?""

"Elizabeth approached me with concerns about protecting certain assets. She wanted to ensure that Maya would always have a secure place to live.""

I turned to the next page.

The trust had been established to protect the house and its proceeds for Maya's benefit. Under certain conditions, the administrator could manage the property until Maya reached a specified age.

But the date beside that condition had already passed.

I looked at Martin.

"Maya is twenty-one. Why would you still have control?""

"Because the trust was amended.""

"By whom?""

"By the person authorized to amend it.""

"Elizabeth is dead.""

"Yes.""

"And I never signed this.""

Martin adjusted his cuff.

"You didn't need to.""

I stared at the signature beneath the amendment.

Richard Bennett.

It looked like mine.

Almost.

The final stroke of the B was wrong. I had always drawn it with a slight upward curve. This one slanted down.

Someone had copied my signature.

"That isn't my signature.""

Martin's expression remained neutral.

"That's a serious allegation.""

"It's a fact.""

"Then you'll have no trouble proving it.""

He took a step toward the door.

I blocked his path.

"You're not leaving until you explain what this has to do with the missing tuition money.""

Martin glanced at Vanessa.

"Your wife can explain that better than I can.""

I turned toward her.

"Then let's hear it.""

Vanessa came down the remaining stairs slowly. She looked smaller than I had ever seen her, stripped of the confidence she usually wore like armor.

"I didn't know about the amendment," she said.

Martin laughed quietly.

"Of course you did.""

Vanessa flinched.

"Don't.""

"Don't what? Tell your husband the truth?""

I looked between them.

"What truth?""

Martin removed another document from his coat.

"This house was used as collateral for a private loan. The loan was secured against the trust's interest in the property.""

I felt my stomach drop.

"How much?""

"One hundred and forty thousand dollars.""

The room seemed to tilt.

"Who borrowed that money?""

Martin looked at Vanessa.

She closed her eyes.

"I did," she whispered.

I stared at her.

"You borrowed money against my house?""

"I thought I could pay it back.""

"With what?""

She began to cry.

"Richard, please.""

"With what, Vanessa?""

She pressed her hands against her mouth.

Martin answered for her.

"She believed the household accounts would provide enough liquidity to cover the payments. When that proved insufficient, she began moving money from other sources.""

"Maya's tuition.""

Martin inclined his head.

"Among other things.""

I felt something hot rise in my chest.

"How much money has she taken?""

"That depends on how you define taken.""

I grabbed the front of his coat.

"Don't play games with me.""

Martin didn't struggle.

Instead, he looked down at my hand.

"Mr. Bennett, assaulting me won't restore your daughter's savings.""

I released him.

Vanessa sank onto the sofa.

"I never meant for any of this to happen.""

I turned toward her.

"Then tell me what happened.""

She stared at the carpet.

"Before I met you, I made a series of bad decisions. I trusted people who promised me opportunities. I invested money I couldn't afford to lose. When the investment collapsed, I borrowed to cover the losses.""

"From Martin?""

"Eventually.""

"How much did you owe him?""

"At first, thirty thousand.""

"And now?""

She didn't answer.

Martin did.

"With interest, penalties, and legal expenses, the outstanding balance is approximately two hundred and twelve thousand dollars.""

I stared at him.

"How does a thirty-thousand-dollar debt become two hundred thousand?""

"Because your wife missed payments, breached the terms of the agreement, and attempted to conceal the default.""

Vanessa shook her head.

"That's not what happened.""

Martin raised an eyebrow.

"Would you like me to read the correspondence?""

"No.""

"Then perhaps you should stop pretending.""

I walked to the window, trying to breathe.

The house had been my refuge after Elizabeth died. I had painted the living room myself. Maya had measured her height against the kitchen doorframe every birthday. Elizabeth had planted the maple tree outside, and every autumn its leaves turned gold.

Now a stranger was telling me that my home had become collateral for a debt I had never agreed to.

I turned back.

"Why did you come here today?""

Martin straightened his coat.

"To prevent a misunderstanding from becoming a legal crisis.""

"Someone broke into my house.""

"I know nothing about that.""

"Then why were you waiting for us to discover the trust documents?""

"I wasn't.""

"How did you know I was looking into them?""

He didn't answer.

I took out my phone.

"I'm calling the police.""

Martin shrugged.

"That's your right.""

Vanessa jumped up.

"No!""

I stopped.

She rushed toward me.

"Richard, please. If you call the police, everything will come out.""

"That's the point.""

"You don't understand. Martin has people who can make things very difficult for us.""

"Us?""

"For Maya.""

I lowered the phone slightly.

"What does Maya have to do with this?""

Vanessa's face crumpled.

"Because the trust was supposed to protect her. If the police investigate the forged amendment, the debt, and the missing money, they may freeze everything until they understand what's happened.""

"Then we cooperate.""

"And if they discover the old transactions?""

"What old transactions?""

She looked at Martin.

He shook his head once.

It was a tiny gesture.

But Vanessa immediately fell silent.

I saw it.

The fear wasn't only about the debt.

She was afraid of him.

I stepped away from the window.

"Martin, leave my house.""

He studied me for several seconds.

Then he reached into his pocket and placed a second business card on the table.

"When you're ready to have a rational conversation, call me.""

He walked to the door.

Before leaving, he paused beside Vanessa.

"Remember what we discussed.""

She didn't look at him.

The door closed.

I waited until I heard his car pull away before turning to my wife.

"What did he mean?""

Vanessa sat motionless.

"Vanessa.""

She wiped her face.

"I can't tell you.""

I laughed bitterly.

"You can't? Or you won't?""

She looked up.

"If I tell you everything, you'll never look at me the same way again.""

"That ship has sailed.""

She flinched.

I regretted the cruelty for approximately one second.

Then I remembered Maya's empty account.

"Did you steal the tuition money?""

Vanessa stared at me.

"Yes.""

The word was barely audible.

I felt the room go silent around it.

"Why?""

"Martin said the payments were due. He threatened to seize the house. I thought I could borrow the money for a few days and replace it before Maya noticed.""

"She noticed.""

"I know.""

"You lied to her.""

"I know.""

"You lied to me.""

She nodded, crying openly now.

"Yes.""

I walked to the kitchen and gripped the counter.

My hands were shaking.

"Why didn't you tell me about the debt?""

"Because I was ashamed.""

"Shame doesn't explain forging my signature.""

"I didn't forge it.""

I turned.

"Martin just showed me a document with my name on it.""

"I didn't sign that amendment. I swear to you.""

"Then who did?""

She shook her head.

"I don't know.""

"You're telling me you borrowed money against my house, used my daughter's savings to make payments, and have no idea who forged my signature?""

"I know how it sounds.""

"It sounds like a crime.""

Vanessa covered her face.

For a long time, neither of us spoke.

Then she lowered her hands.

"Richard, I need you to understand something. Martin didn't just lend me money. He helped me when nobody else would.

He knew things about my past, things I couldn't tell you. He said he'd protect me.""

"From what?""

She looked toward the front door.

"From Claire.""

My stomach tightened.

"Your sister?""

Vanessa nodded.

"She knows what I did.""

"What did you do?""

Her lips trembled.

"Eleven years ago, Claire discovered the accounts I'd opened in her name. She threatened to expose me. I panicked. I went to Martin because he was already involved in the company's finances.""

"What happened to Claire?""

"I don't know.""

"Denise says she's alive.""

Vanessa's head snapped up.

"You saw Denise?""

"Yes.""

"When?""

"This morning.""

Vanessa stood so abruptly that she knocked the coffee table with her knee.

"Where is she?""

"I don't know.""

"Did she give you anything?""

"Why?""

"Richard, did she give you anything?""

I stared at her.

"You already know about the folder. What else are you hiding?""

She backed away.

"Denise isn't who you think she is.""

"That's what you said about Elizabeth.""

Vanessa's eyes filled with tears.

"Because it's true.""

I took out my phone.

"Then I'll let the police sort it out.""

She rushed toward me again.

"Please! Just give me until tonight.""

"Why?""

"Because I can get proof.""

"Proof of what?""

"That Martin forged the amendment. That he used my debt to control me. That he has been moving money through accounts I never knew existed.""

I looked at her for a long time.

"Why should I believe you?""

She reached into her pocket and pulled out a small silver flash drive.

"Because this is the recording of a conversation I had with him three months ago.""

I didn't take it.

"What's on it?""

"Martin explaining how he planned to transfer the house into another company without your knowledge.""

I stared at the drive.

"Why did you record him?""

"Because I realized he was never going to let me pay off the debt. He wanted the house.""

"Then why didn't you come to me?""

She looked away.

"Because by then, I'd already done too much.""

I took the drive.

"Where's the original recording?""

"On my laptop.""

"Where is it?""

She swallowed.

"Upstairs.""

I walked toward the stairs.

Behind me, Vanessa whispered, "Richard?""

I stopped.

"If you listen to that recording, you'll hear another voice.""

I turned.

"What voice?""

She looked directly at me.

"The person Martin was talking to. The person who told him how to get control of the house.""

I felt my stomach tighten.

"Who?""

Vanessa's answer came out as a whisper.

"Your wife's brother.""

I stared at her.

Elizabeth had been an only child.

I'd met her parents. I'd attended their funerals. I'd spent eight years helping her mother settle the family estate.

There had never been a brother.

"You're lying.""

Vanessa shook her head.

"No. Elizabeth had a brother. His name was Daniel.""

May you like

She took a trembling breath.

"And he's the man who taught Martin how to make your signature look real.""
