Chapter 7: The Child Who Knew Too Much

The note slipped from my fingers.

For a moment, I couldn’t move.

I couldn’t think.

I couldn’t even feel the cold air against my skin.

All I could see was one sentence.

*Now you’ll understand why Leo was never supposed to come home.*

My son.

My daughter.

Gone.

Again.

After fourteen months of searching.

After finally holding Leo in my arms.

After promising him nobody would ever take him from me again.

I failed.

A sound escaped my throat.

Not a word.

Not a scream.

Just pain.

“Elijah.””

Elena’s voice came from behind me.

I turned.

She looked at the backpack in my hand.

Then at my face.

And she immediately understood.

“No.””

I stepped toward her.

“Where are they?””

She shook her head.

“I don’t know.””

“Don’t lie to me.””

“I’m not.””

“You knew this would happen.””

Her expression broke.

“No.””

“You knew Daniel was dangerous.””

“Yes.””

“You knew he was watching.””

“Yes.””

“You knew he was capable of taking children.””

“Yes.””

My voice rose.

“Then why were my kids outside alone?””

Elena flinched.

Because she knew there was no answer that could fix what happened.

The police arrived seconds later.

Red and blue lights flashed across the trees.

Officers rushed toward us.

“What happened?””

I looked at them.

I wanted to explain everything.

The floor.

The tunnel.

Leo.

Daniel.

The notebook.

The missing children.

But one thought consumed every other thought.

“My children are gone.””

The officer’s face changed immediately.

“Who?””

“My son and my daughter.””

“How long?””

“I don’t know.””

My voice cracked.

“Minutes.””

They moved quickly.

The yard filled with people.

Flashlights cut through the darkness.

Dogs searched the tree line.

Questions came from every direction.

But I barely heard them.

Because I was standing in the exact place where my children had disappeared.

And I kept thinking the same thing.

Leo had just come home.

And I lost him again.

A detective approached me.

“I’m Detective Harris.””

I nodded.

“We need you to tell us everything.””

I looked at Elena.

She looked terrified.

Not for herself.

For the children.

That was the first time I realized something.

Whatever Elena had done.

Whatever secrets she carried.

She loved Leo.

She loved Maya.

And Daniel knew that.

He knew exactly how to hurt people.

I handed the detective the note.

He read it.

His expression changed.

“Who is Daniel?””

I looked at Elena.

She whispered:

“My husband.””

The detective looked between us.

“Where is he now?””

No one answered.

Because we all knew.

He was somewhere nearby.

Watching.

Waiting.

The search continued for almost an hour.

Then one officer found something.

A trail.

Not footprints.

Something worse.

A small pink bracelet.

Maya’s bracelet.

The one I bought her after she told me she wanted something “as pretty as the stars.””

I picked it up.

My hands shook.

“She wouldn’t take this off.””

The detective looked at me.

“She may have dropped it.””

“No.””

I stared at the bracelet.

“Maya never drops things.””

The detective studied me.

“What are you saying?””

I looked toward the woods.

“She left it.””

Elena stepped closer.

“She was leaving a trail.””

Everyone looked at her.

She swallowed.

“Maya is smart.””

I almost laughed.

My daughter.

Six years old.

Smart enough to understand she might need to leave signs.

Smart enough to know we would look.

I closed my eyes.

“Maya.””

The search team followed the trail.

One bracelet.

Then a piece of Leo’s shirt.

Then a broken branch.

They weren’t being dragged.

They were moving.

Or at least they had been.

That gave me hope.

Until we reached the abandoned road behind the property.

A car was waiting.

Empty.

The door was open.

Inside was a child’s drawing.

I picked it up.

My hands went numb.

It was a picture Maya had drawn.

A family.

Me.

Her.

Leo.

And someone else.

A tall figure standing behind us.

The face was crossed out.

On the back, in Maya’s handwriting, were four words.

*“He was always there.””*

I looked at Elena.

She covered her mouth.

“What?””

She stared at the drawing.

“He was watching before.””

“Before what?””

“Before Leo disappeared.””

My blood ran cold.

The detective turned.

“Explain.””

Elena looked around.

Then whispered:

“Daniel didn’t find Leo.””

Everyone went silent.

“He chose Leo.””

The words felt impossible.

“What does that mean?””

Elena looked at me.

“Daniel knew your family before he met me.””

I stared.

“No.””

“Yes.””

“How?””

She shook her head.

“I don’t know.””

The detective stepped forward.

“Think.””

Elena closed her eyes.

Then suddenly opened them.

“Wait.””

“What?””

She looked at the drawing again.

The crossed-out figure.

The family.

The location.

Then she whispered:

“The playground.””

I frowned.

“What playground?””

“The one near your old house.””

My heart stopped.

The day Leo disappeared.

The last place he was seen.

The playground.

Elena looked at me.

“Daniel was there.””

I froze.

“What?””

“He told me he saw you that day.””

My stomach twisted.

“When?””

“After Leo vanished.””

I stared at her.

“You never told me.””

“I was afraid.””

“Afraid of what?””

She looked toward the dark road.

“Because Daniel said something strange.””

“What?””

Her voice dropped.

“He said, ‘The boy finally knows.’”

The detective wrote something down.

“Knows what?””

Elena shook her head.

“I don’t know.””

I grabbed the sides of my head.

Too many secrets.

Too many missing pieces.

My son ran because he was afraid.

Elena hid him because she thought she was protecting him.

Daniel took my children because—

Because why?

The detective’s radio suddenly crackled.

Everyone turned.

A voice came through.

“We found something.””

The officer’s expression changed.

“Where?””

A pause.

Then:

“Near the old playground.””

My heart stopped.

The detective looked at me.

“You know this place?””

I nodded.

“I do.””

The drive there felt endless.

Every second felt like a lifetime.

When we arrived, the playground was exactly as I remembered.

The faded swings.

The cracked slide.

The old wooden bench where I used to watch Leo play.

But something was different.

There was a small door beneath the slide.

A door that had never been there before.

The detective looked at me.

“Was that always there?””

I shook my head.

“No.””

They opened it.

Inside was a hidden compartment.

Not a tunnel.

Not a room.

Just enough space to hide something.

And inside was a stack of photographs.

I picked up the first one.

Leo.

The second.

Maya.

The third.

Me.

My entire body went cold.

These photos weren’t from after Leo disappeared.

They were before.

Months before.

Someone had been watching us.

Studying us.

The detective picked up another photograph.

His face changed.

“What?””

He turned it toward me.

It was a picture of Daniel.

Standing outside my house.

The date was printed in the corner.

Three months before Leo vanished.

Elena whispered:

“That’s impossible.””

I looked at her.

“Why?””

Her face went pale.

“Because Daniel told me he had never met you before I introduced you.””

The detective looked through the photos.

Then stopped.

“Wait.””

He pulled out one final picture.

Everyone gathered around.

My breath disappeared.

Because it wasn’t a picture of Daniel.

It wasn’t a picture of Leo.

It wasn’t a picture of Maya.

It was a picture of another child.

A boy I had never seen before.

Standing beside Daniel.

The detective looked at Elena.

“Who is this?””

Elena’s lips trembled.

She whispered the name she had been afraid to say.

“Noah.””

Then she turned toward me.

And said something that made my blood run cold.

“Eli…”

“Noah didn’t disappear ten years ago.””

I stared at her.

“What?””

Her voice shook.

“He disappeared because Daniel brought him here.””

The detective looked confused.

“Here?””

Elena nodded slowly.

“To this town.””

A silence fell.

Then my phone rang.

Everyone froze.

Unknown number.

I answered immediately.

A voice came through.

Small.

Terrified.

Leo.

“Dad…”

I almost collapsed.

“Leo! Where are you?””

A pause.

Then my son whispered:

“Daniel isn’t the one who took us.””

My heart stopped.

“Leo, what are you talking about?””

His voice trembled.

“Dad…”

A long silence.

Then:

“The person who planned all of this…”

The call crackled.

May you like

And before it disconnected, I heard Leo say one final sentence.

“It was Aunt Elena.””
