Chapter 6: The First Boy

The scream came from the house.

Not a scream of fear.

A scream of warning.

“RUN!””

Elena’s voice cut through the night.

Every instinct inside me told me to move.

To grab my children and get as far away from that place as possible.

But I couldn’t.

Because Elena was still inside.

And after everything she had done, after everything she had hidden, one truth remained.

She had saved Leo.

She had kept him alive.

I looked at my son.

His face was pale.

“Dad…”

“I’m sorry.””

His eyes widened.

“For what?””

“For making you wait.””

I handed Maya my phone.

“Stay with your brother.””

She nodded quickly.

For the first time since I found Leo, I saw something familiar in her expression.

Not fear.

Determination.

She had spent fourteen months waiting for this moment too.

I ran toward the house.

The front door was open.

The lights were still flickering.

Every step inside felt like walking deeper into a nightmare I had somehow missed.

The living room was exactly as we left it.

Except the broken floor.

The hole.

The evidence.

The truth.

“Elena!””

No answer.

I moved toward the basement stairs.

Then I heard something.

A struggle.

From upstairs.

I ran.

“ELENA!””

I reached the hallway just as a bedroom door slammed shut.

I froze.

The sound came from the room at the end of the hall.

The master bedroom.

I pushed the door open.

And stopped.

Elena was sitting on the floor.

Her hands were tied behind her back.

Daniel stood beside the window.

Calm.

Controlled.

Like he belonged there.

Like this was his house.

Like we were the ones invading.

“You shouldn’t have come back,” Daniel said.

I ignored him.

I rushed to Elena.

“Are you hurt?””

She shook her head.

“No.””

I cut the rope around her wrists with a broken piece of metal from the floor.

“Where is Daniel?””

She looked at me.

“He’s right there.””

I turned.

Daniel hadn’t moved.

“You’re not running?””

He smiled faintly.

“No.””

“Why?””

“Because you’re finally asking the right questions.””

I stood.

“What happened to the first boy?””

The smile disappeared.

For the first time, Daniel looked genuinely annoyed.

“Elena told you?””

“No.””

I stepped closer.

“You did.””

His eyes narrowed.

“I told you exactly what you needed to know.””

“No.””

My voice hardened.

“You told me enough to make me angry.””

I pointed toward the hallway.

“But I want the truth.””

Daniel looked at Elena.

“You always had a problem with the truth.””

Elena’s face tightened.

“Don’t.””

Daniel laughed softly.

“Still protecting him?””

I looked at my sister.

“Protecting who?””

Neither answered.

My anger grew.

“Someone better start explaining.””

Elena lowered her head.

“Eli…”

“No.””

I pointed between them.

“You both knew something.””

She nodded.

“Yes.””

“How long?””

Her silence answered.

I felt sick.

“How long?””

“Since before Leo disappeared.””

The room became silent.

I stared at her.

“What does that mean?””

Elena looked toward the floor.

“Daniel wasn’t supposed to be near Leo.””

My eyes moved to him.

“Why?””

She swallowed.

“Because I knew what he was.””

Daniel rolled his eyes.

“Here we go.””

I turned toward him.

“You were married to him.””

Elena nodded.

“Yes.””

“And you knew?””

“I suspected.””

“Suspected what?””

Her voice broke.

“That he had done this before.””

The words landed heavily.

“Done what?””

She looked at me.

“Taken children.””

My stomach turned.

“How many?””

She didn’t answer.

“How many?””

“I don’t know.””

Daniel laughed quietly.

“Because there weren’t any.””

I looked at him.

“You expect me to believe that?””

“I expect you to think.””

He walked slowly across the room.

“Look at the facts.””

I hated how calm he was.

“You found Leo under Elena’s floor.””

“Yes.””

“You found a notebook.””

“Yes.””

“You found a phone recording.””

“Yes.””

He stopped.

“So why are you still assuming I’m the villain?””

The question bothered me.

Not because I believed him.

Because for one second, I wondered.

Then I looked at Leo’s frightened face in my mind.

The way he reacted when Daniel spoke.

The way he begged me not to let Daniel take him.

No child reacted like that without reason.

“You manipulated him.””

Daniel shook his head.

“No.””

He looked at Elena.

“She did.””

Elena went pale.

I turned.

“What?””

Daniel smiled.

“Ask her.””

“Elena?””

She closed her eyes.

“I was trying to protect Leo.””

“By hiding him?””

“I panicked.””

“You kidnapped my son.””

“No.””

Her voice broke.

“I rescued him.””

I stared at her.

“From what?””

She looked at me.

“From Daniel.””

The room went quiet.

Then Daniel laughed.

A real laugh.

Not angry.

Almost sad.

“She still tells herself that.””

Elena stood.

“You know what you did.””

“I know what you did.””

“You threatened him.””

“I warned him.””

“You scared him.””

“I showed him the truth.””

I looked between them.

“What truth?””

Neither spoke.

Then Elena whispered:

“The first boy.””

My stomach tightened.

“Who was he?””

Daniel looked at the window.

And for the first time, his confidence disappeared.

“His name was Noah.””

A name.

A person.

Not a story.

Not a rumor.

A boy.

“What happened to Noah?””

Elena’s eyes filled with tears.

“He was my nephew.””

I froze.

“What?””

Daniel looked at her.

“Don’t.””

But she continued.

“Noah was my sister’s son.””

I felt dizzy.

“Your nephew?””

She nodded.

“He disappeared when he was eight.””

The room seemed to shrink.

“When?””

“Ten years ago.””

I looked at Daniel.

“You knew him?””

Daniel didn’t answer.

Elena did.

“He was the reason I started watching Daniel.””

My heart pounded.

“Explain.””

She took a shaky breath.

“My sister trusted him.””

Daniel’s jaw tightened.

“She was wrong.””

Elena ignored him.

“Noah started acting differently after spending time with Daniel.””

“Why?””

“He was afraid.””

The same word.

The same pattern.

Leo.

Noah.

Different years.

Same fear.

“What happened to Noah?””

Elena looked down.

“We never found him.””

Silence.

Then Daniel spoke.

“Because he ran away.””

I turned.

“You said he was taken.””

“No.””

Daniel’s voice sharpened.

“You assumed.””

He looked at me.

“Just like you assumed Leo was kidnapped.””

My chest tightened.

Because he was right about one thing.

I had assumed.

I had built my entire world around one idea.

Someone stole my son.

But what if there was more?

What if Leo’s disappearance wasn’t simple?

Daniel walked closer.

“Your son didn’t tell you everything.””

I looked toward the hallway.

“Where is Leo?””

Elena suddenly looked alarmed.

“Eli.””

“What?””

“Where did you leave him?””

My stomach dropped.

“With Maya.””

Her face changed.

“Outside?””

“Yes.””

She rushed toward the window.

“No.””

“What?””

She looked outside.

The yard was empty.

The trees moved in the wind.

But Leo and Maya were gone.

My blood turned cold.

“No.””

I ran outside.

“MAYA!””

Nothing.

“LEO!””

No answer.

The police sirens were louder now.

But my children were gone.

On the ground near the trees, I saw something.

A small blue backpack.

Leo’s backpack.

I picked it up with shaking hands.

Inside was a note.

Just one sentence.

Written in black ink.

May you like

My fingers trembled as I read it.

*“Now you’ll understand why Leo was never supposed to come home.””*
