Chapter 6: The Stranger at the Door
Daniel looked at me.
Neither of us moved.
The voice came again from downstairs.
"Daniel, I know you're in there. We need to talk.""
I felt every muscle in my body tighten.
Marcus Bell had been a name on a phone screen only hours earlier. Now he was standing outside my brother's house, at nearly midnight, after Claire had warned Daniel not to let him inside.
I reached for Daniel's arm.
"Don't open the door.""
He nodded.
Then he took out his phone and called the police nonemergency line.
As he explained the situation, the knocking became louder.
"Daniel, come on. This doesn't have to get ugly.""
My brother moved toward the top of the stairs.
I followed him, staying several steps behind.
The man outside continued speaking.
"Claire told me you found the documents. I know you're upset, but I can explain what happened.""
Daniel finished giving the dispatcher our address.
He was instructed to remain inside, avoid confrontation, and call emergency services again if the man attempted to force entry.
He ended the call and looked toward the front door.
"How does he know we're here?""
"Maybe Claire told him.""
Daniel shook his head.
"She left before we did. I didn't tell anyone I was coming home.""
The doorbell rang.
Then a message appeared on Daniel's phone.
Unknown number.
Tell your sister to leave. This is between you and me.
I stared at the screen.
"He knows I'm here.""
Daniel typed a response.
Who are you, and why are you at my house?
The reply came almost immediately.
I can tell you what Claire won't.
Daniel looked at me.
Then he typed:
Wait outside. The police are on their way.
There was no reply.
For a few seconds, the house became quiet.
Then we heard footsteps moving across the porch.
A shadow passed the narrow window beside the door.
Daniel stepped away from it.
I pulled out my phone and opened the camera, ready to record if the man tried anything.
The handle turned.
Once.
Twice.
Then it stopped.
My heart hammered against my ribs.
"Did Claire give him a key?"" I whispered.
Daniel shook his head.
"I don't know.""
We heard the sound of something scraping against the lock.
Then a man's voice came through the door.
"Daniel, I'm not here to hurt you.""
"Then leave," Daniel called back.
"I can't.""
"Why not?""
"Because if you don't listen to me tonight, you'll make a mistake you can't undo.""
Daniel's face hardened.
"What mistake?""
"The same one Claire almost made.""
Silence.
Then Daniel stepped closer to the door, keeping a safe distance from the handle.
"Tell me what you're talking about.""
Marcus exhaled.
"She wasn't supposed to involve you in any of this.""
Daniel laughed bitterly.
"She involved me when she married me.""
"That's not what I mean.""
"Then explain.""
There was a pause.
"Claire told me she was going to confess after the shower. She said she couldn't keep lying to you.""
"Then why did you send her messages about leaving after I signed the papers?""
"Because I was trying to protect her.""
"From what?""
"From the people she owed money to.""
Daniel stared at the door.
"What people?""
"I can't explain this through a door.""
"Then you should have thought of that before you came here.""
For several seconds, Marcus said nothing.
Then he spoke in a lower voice.
"Daniel, the money Claire took wasn't all hers to spend. Some of it belonged to someone else.""
My stomach dropped.
Daniel looked at me.
"Who?""
"I can't tell you that.""
"Then you're wasting my time.""
Marcus's voice sharpened.
"Do you want to know why she faked the pregnancy, or not?""
Daniel stopped.
The question struck something deep inside him.
He wanted answers.
He needed them.
And Marcus knew it.
"What does that have to do with anything?"" Daniel asked.
"Everything.""
Marcus took a breath.
"Claire didn't come to me because she wanted to trick you. She came to me because she was terrified of someone finding out what she'd already done.""
"What had she done?""
"She borrowed money.""
"From whom?""
"A man who doesn't like being owed.""
Daniel's expression darkened.
"How much?""
"Enough that she couldn't pay it back.""
I felt sick.
"You're telling me my wife borrowed money from some criminal?"" Daniel demanded.
"I'm telling you she made a terrible decision before the pregnancy ever became part of the story.""
"What decision?""
Marcus hesitated.
Then he said, "She used your name.""
Daniel went completely still.
"My name for what?""
"To secure a loan.""
I grabbed the banister.
Daniel's voice became dangerously quiet.
"What kind of loan?""
"A private loan. The lender believed you were backing it.""
"I never agreed to anything.""
"I know.""
"Then how did she use my name?""
Marcus didn't answer.
Daniel looked toward the hallway.
"Is that what the papers were? A document making me responsible for her debt?""
"Not exactly.""
"Stop speaking in riddles!""
Marcus raised his voice.
"The papers were supposed to transfer enough money to settle what she owed. Once the money cleared, the lender would stop looking for her.""
"And then she planned to leave me?""
"That was her plan.""
Daniel stared at the floor.
For several seconds, I thought he might collapse.
Then he asked, "How much does she owe?""
Marcus gave him a number.
It was enormous.
Far beyond what Claire could have earned through her job or saved during their marriage.
Daniel's hand tightened around his phone.
"Why would anyone lend her that much money?""
"Because she told them you had assets.""
"She told them I would pay?""
"She told them you would make sure they got their money.""
Daniel looked as if he had been struck.
"She used me as collateral.""
"Not officially.""
"Then what did she do?""
"She showed them financial records. She told them you were going to sign a guarantee.""
Daniel's face changed.
The documents in the folder.
The copied signature.
The insurance application.
The strange transfers.
Suddenly, they no longer looked like separate acts of deception.
They looked like pieces of a larger plan.
Marcus continued.
"Claire thought she could convince you to sign everything before you discovered the pregnancy was fake. She said the baby would make you more willing to secure your family's future.""
Daniel closed his eyes.
He could barely speak.
"She was going to use our child to make me sign a financial guarantee.""
"Yes.""
"But there was no child.""
"I know.""
Daniel leaned against the wall.
For the first time that night, his anger seemed to disappear completely.
All that remained was disbelief.
"How could she do this?""
Marcus didn't answer.
Then he said something unexpected.
"Because she wasn't the only person who thought you would sign those papers.""
Daniel looked up.
"What does that mean?""
A car door slammed outside.
Marcus fell silent.
We heard footsteps moving away from the porch.
Then the engine of a vehicle started.
Daniel rushed toward the side window but stayed back from the glass.
A dark sedan pulled away from the curb.
Its headlights swept across the house before disappearing around the corner.
The police arrived minutes later.
Two officers spoke with Daniel, reviewed the messages, and asked whether he had received any direct threats. Daniel explained what Marcus had said and showed them the note Claire had left in the nursery.
The officers advised him to preserve the evidence and report any further contact. They also documented the unauthorized access concerns and the attempted entry.
After they left, Daniel stood in the kitchen, staring at the folder.
"I need to find Claire.""
I shook my head.
"Not tonight.""
"She knows who the lender is. She knows what she signed. She knows what Marcus is talking about.""
"And she's already lied to you repeatedly.""
He looked at me.
"She's still my wife.""
"That doesn't mean you have to confront her alone.""
Daniel rubbed his face.
"Then what am I supposed to do?""
"Talk to a lawyer. Contact your bank again. Secure your accounts.
Let the police know if Marcus returns. And tomorrow, we can start finding out what actually happened.""
He nodded reluctantly.
Then he looked toward the stairs.
"I can't stay here.""
I understood.
Every room in that house was full of memories he could no longer trust.
I offered to take him to my place, but he shook his head.
"I don't want to bring this into Sophie's home.""
"Daniel, she's safe with me.""
"I know. That's why I don't want her waking up and finding me crying in your kitchen.""
I reached for his hand.
"You don't have to hide being hurt.""
He gave me a tired smile.
"I know. I just need somewhere I can fall apart without worrying about anyone else.""
I helped him pack a bag.
Before leaving, he went upstairs one last time.
He stood in the nursery doorway for almost a minute.
Then he removed the framed print from above the changing table.
He stared at the words.
You are loved beyond measure.
He wrapped the frame in a towel and placed it carefully inside the bag.
I didn't ask why.
We drove to a hotel near my house, where Daniel checked into a room under his own name.
He thanked me for staying with him.
Then he closed the door.
I returned home shortly before two in the morning.
Sophie was asleep in my bed, her little hand curled around her favorite stuffed rabbit. I lay beside her and listened to her breathing until my own heartbeat slowed.
For the first time all day, I felt safe.
Then my phone vibrated.
A message from an unknown number.
You need to stop helping Daniel.
I sat up.
Another message followed.
You don't know what your brother did before he met Claire.
I stared at the screen.
My first instinct was to dismiss it as another attempt to frighten us.
But then the sender sent a photograph.
It showed Daniel standing outside a bank several months earlier, holding a folder beneath his arm.
The image was taken from across the street.
Someone had been watching him.
I enlarged the photograph.
In the background, beside a parked black sedan, stood a woman with dark hair.
I didn't recognize her.
But the message beneath the picture made my blood run cold.
Ask him about the money he received three years ago.
I stared at the screen until the letters blurred.
Three years ago.
That was the year Daniel had bought his house.
The year he had told our parents he had received a generous performance bonus at work.
The year he had started talking about becoming financially secure enough to raise a family.
I had never questioned him.
Why would I?
He was my brother.
I typed a response.
Who is this?
The sender replied instantly.
Someone who knows Claire isn't the only person in your family with a secret.
I looked at Sophie, sleeping peacefully beside me.
Then I called Daniel.
He answered on the second ring.
"What's wrong?""
I sent him the photograph and the messages.
For a long time, he said nothing.
Then he whispered, "Where did you get this?""
"Someone sent it to me. They said I should ask you about money you received three years ago.""
The silence stretched.
"Daniel?""
Finally, he spoke.
"Don't reply to that number.""
"Why?""
"Because I know exactly what they're talking about.""
My stomach tightened.
"What money?""
He took a shaky breath.
"Three years ago, I didn't receive a bonus.""
I sat completely still.
"Then how did you buy the house?""
Daniel's voice dropped to a whisper.
"I borrowed the money.""
"From whom?""
He hesitated.
Then he gave me a name.
A name that made the entire story feel much more dangerous.
"Marcus Bell's employer.""
May you like
And before I could ask another question, Daniel said the words that changed everything.
"I think Claire was trying to get me to sign those papers because she knew the original debt was about to come due.""
