Chapter 4: The Papers That Could Destroy Him
For several seconds, Daniel didn't move.
Claire stood near the front door, clutching the strap of her handbag so tightly that her knuckles had turned white. Her confession seemed to hang in the air between us, heavier than anything she had admitted about the pregnancy.
The papers that would have given her everything she needed to leave him.
Daniel looked at her as if he were trying to recognize a stranger wearing his wife's face.
"What papers?"" he asked.
Claire swallowed.
"I didn't mean for it to happen this way.""
"Stop saying that.""
His voice was quiet, but the anger beneath it was unmistakable.
"You keep telling me what you didn't mean to do. You didn't mean to lie. You didn't mean to fake a pregnancy.
You didn't mean to take money. You didn't mean to humiliate me in front of our family. Now you're telling me you didn't mean for something else to happen.""
He took a breath.
"Tell me what you actually did.""
Claire glanced at me.
"Can we please talk without your sister listening?""
"No.""
"Daniel, she's enjoying this.""
I couldn't believe what I was hearing.
"Enjoying this? Your husband has just discovered that the child he's spent six months preparing for doesn't exist. He's found fake ultrasound pictures, unexplained payments, and messages about secret paperwork. And somehow, I'm the problem?""
"You're not helping!""
"Neither are you," Daniel interrupted.
Claire went silent.
My brother walked to the living room table, picked up his phone, and opened the message he'd seen earlier.
He turned the screen toward her.
"Read it.""
She didn't move.
"Read the message, Claire.""
Her eyes dropped to the display.
Everything is ready. Once Daniel signs the papers, we can leave.
Daniel's voice cracked.
"What did you want me to sign?""
Claire pressed her lips together.
"I was going to tell you.""
"That isn't an answer.""
"I needed to make sure everything was settled first.""
"Settled how?""
She sat down abruptly on the sofa.
For a moment, she looked less like the confident woman who had greeted our relatives that afternoon and more like someone whose carefully constructed world had collapsed faster than she could repair it.
"I was going to leave," she whispered.
Daniel stared at her.
"You've already said that.""
"I wanted to leave without destroying everything.""
He gave a short, bitter laugh.
"You fabricated an entire pregnancy. How much more destruction were you planning to avoid?""
Claire began crying again.
"I know how it looks.""
"Then explain how it actually is.""
She wiped her cheeks.
"About four months ago, I realized I couldn't keep pretending forever. I knew eventually you'd ask for another ultrasound, or someone would notice that I wasn't changing the way a pregnant woman should.""
"So you decided to steal from me before I found out?""
"No!""
"Then what were the papers?""
She hesitated.
Finally, she reached into her handbag and pulled out a thin brown folder.
Daniel stared at it.
"What's that?""
"Something I was working on.""
"Give it to me.""
She clutched the folder to her chest.
"Please, just listen first.""
"No.""
"Daniel—"
"Give me the folder.""
After a moment, she placed it on the coffee table.
He opened it.
The first document was a financial statement. The second was a draft agreement concerning the house. The third contained a series of signatures and initials that made my brother's face turn white.
He flipped through the pages.
Then he stopped.
"What is this?""
Claire said nothing.
Daniel lifted one sheet.
It appeared to be a document authorizing the transfer of a substantial amount of money from a jointly managed investment account.
His name was printed beneath a signature that looked remarkably like his own.
But Daniel hadn't signed it.
"I never signed this.""
Claire's mouth trembled.
"It was a draft.""
"Then why does it have my signature?""
"I was trying to see whether the paperwork would be accepted.""
"How did you get my signature?""
She looked away.
Daniel stared at the document again.
The signature had been copied from another financial form he had signed months earlier.
I knew because I had watched him sign similar paperwork when he refinanced the house.
My stomach tightened.
"Claire, did you forge his signature?""
She turned toward me.
"I told you this doesn't concern you.""
Daniel slammed the document onto the table.
"Answer her!""
Claire recoiled.
"I was going to explain it before anything happened.""
"Before what happened? Before you disappeared with my money?""
"I wasn't going to disappear!""
"Then why did you write that you and Marcus could leave once I signed the papers?""
She covered her face.
"I needed somewhere to go.""
"Somewhere to go with what?""
She didn't answer.
Daniel looked through the folder again, searching for an explanation that might make the documents less horrifying.
Instead, he found a printed email.
The sender's name was Marcus Bell.
The subject line read: *Final Arrangements.*
Daniel began reading aloud.
"'Once the transfer clears, you should have enough to establish yourself elsewhere. Make sure the original documents are signed before you leave. I cannot be connected to this after Friday.''"
He stopped.
His eyes moved to the date.
The email had been sent three days earlier.
He looked at Claire.
"Today is Friday.""
She began shaking her head.
"Daniel, it wasn't what you think.""
"Then tell me what I should think.""
"I needed money to start over.""
"Why?""
She stared at him.
"Because I knew you would never forgive me.""
The answer landed with an awful finality.
Daniel lowered the paper.
"So you were planning to take money from our accounts, forge my signature, and leave me after I discovered the pregnancy was fake?""
"I wasn't trying to hurt you.""
"Then what were you trying to do?""
Claire's voice rose.
"Save myself!""
The room fell silent.
She stood suddenly, her face flushed and her eyes shining with tears.
"You have no idea what it has been like to live in this marriage!""
Daniel looked stunned.
"What does that mean?""
"Every conversation becomes about your plans. Your career. Your house.
Your family. Your perfect future. You wanted children, so badly that sometimes I felt like you married me because I was supposed to give you one.""
He stared at her.
"I married you because I loved you.""
"Maybe you did. But I couldn't keep watching you wait for something I couldn't give you.""
"Then you should have told me you were struggling!""
"And what would you have done? Told me it was fine? Bought another book? Made another plan?""
Daniel opened his mouth, but she continued.
"You would have spent every month hoping. You would have watched me take tests. You would have looked at me with that hopeful expression, and I would have had to disappoint you again and again.""
"So you invented a baby.""
Her expression crumpled.
"I thought if I could give you what you wanted, everything would finally be okay.""
Daniel stared at her for a long time.
Then he asked, "Did you ever even want a child with me?""
Claire's silence answered before she did.
"I wanted to want one.""
My brother looked away.
It was the cruelest sentence she could have said.
Because it meant that while he had been imagining their future together, she had been pretending to share a dream she wasn't sure she wanted.
I stepped closer to Daniel.
He barely seemed aware of me.
"There's something else," he said quietly.
Claire froze.
He held up the financial document.
"Did Marcus help you create these papers?""
She nodded reluctantly.
"And did you promise him money?""
"He was helping me.""
"That's not what I asked.""
Claire's gaze dropped.
"Yes.""
Daniel took a slow breath.
"How much?""
She whispered a number.
I felt the room tilt.
It was more than twenty thousand dollars.
Daniel lowered himself into a chair.
For a moment, he seemed unable to process the amount.
Then he looked up.
"Where did that money come from?""
Claire didn't answer.
He checked his phone, comparing the amount with the transfers he had discovered earlier.
His expression changed.
Some of the money had come from their shared account.
But another portion had been withdrawn from an investment fund that Daniel had established years before their marriage.
An account he had told me about when he was planning to buy the house.
It contained money he had saved throughout his twenties.
Money intended for emergencies, future children, and the financial security he had always wanted his family to have.
Claire had apparently found a way to access it.
"How did you get into that account?"" he asked.
She looked frightened.
"You gave me access.""
"Only to review the statements.""
"I thought I could put it back.""
Daniel laughed once, without humor.
"You thought you could put back money you stole to pay someone to help you fake a pregnancy?""
Claire began sobbing.
"I was desperate!""
"And what was Marcus desperate for? His share?""
She looked at him sharply.
That reaction told us more than another confession might have.
Daniel noticed it too.
He slowly placed the documents back into the folder.
"Is he the father of a child you're carrying?""
Claire's eyes widened.
"What?""
"Is there another pregnancy? Another man? Another secret I haven't found yet?""
"No!""
"Then why are you protecting him?""
"I'm not protecting him.""
"You're protecting something.""
She shook her head.
Daniel stood.
"I'm done guessing.""
He walked to the front door and opened it.
Claire stared at him.
"What are you doing?""
"I need you to leave.""
Her expression collapsed.
"Daniel, you can't be serious.""
"You need somewhere to go. You have friends. You have family. You have Marcus, apparently.""
"You're throwing me out?""
"I'm asking you to leave tonight while I figure out what happens next.""
"This is my home too!""
"It was our home.""
She stared at him in disbelief.
Then her eyes moved toward the staircase.
Toward the nursery.
For a moment, I thought she might run upstairs and lock herself in the room she had helped decorate.
Instead, she turned back to Daniel.
"If I leave, you'll never know the whole truth.""
He didn't move.
"Then tell me now.""
Claire looked at the folder on the table.
Her lips trembled.
"I can't.""
"Why?""
"Because if I tell you everything, you'll hate me forever.""
Daniel's face hardened.
"Claire, I already don't recognize the woman standing in front of me.""
She flinched.
Then she grabbed her handbag.
Before walking out, she turned toward me.
"You think you've won something today, don't you?""
I stared at her.
"This isn't a competition.""
"You've always thought you were better than me.""
"Claire—"
"You have your daughter. Your happy little life. You get to stand there and judge me because everything worked out for you.""
My anger vanished beneath a wave of disbelief.
Everything worked out for me?
My marriage had ended in a painful divorce. I had spent two years rebuilding my life, working extra hours, and trying to give Sophie a stable home while learning how to be both parents when necessary.
Claire knew that.
She had sat at my kitchen table and listened to me cry.
She had held Sophie while I went through the worst weeks of my life.
And now she was using my daughter's existence as a weapon because her own lies had been exposed.
I took a breath.
"I never judged you for struggling to have a child. I would never judge you for not wanting children. I would never judge you for being afraid. But I will judge you for teaching my daughter that telling the truth is something she should be punished for.""
Claire's expression changed.
For a second, she looked as though she might apologize.
Then her phone rang.
She glanced at the screen.
Marcus.
She rejected the call.
A second later, a message appeared.
I couldn't see all of it, but the first line was visible.
*Did he sign it? We don't have much time.*
Claire quickly turned off the screen.
Daniel had seen it.
His face went still.
"What does he mean, we don't have much time?""
She backed toward the door.
"Goodbye, Daniel.""
He didn't stop her.
She walked into the night and closed the door behind her.
For several seconds, we listened to her footsteps fading down the porch.
Then Daniel locked the door.
He turned to me.
"I need a lawyer.""
I nodded.
"And I need to know whether those documents can be used to take my house.""
"We'll find out.""
He looked at the folder.
Then he said something that made my skin prickle.
"There's one thing I haven't told you.""
I waited.
"Last month, Claire asked me to update my life insurance policy.""
My stomach tightened.
"Why?""
"She said we needed to make sure the baby would be protected if something happened to me.""
He looked toward the stairs.
"I added her as the primary beneficiary.""
The room seemed to grow colder.
"Daniel, how much is the policy worth?""
He told me.
I felt my knees weaken.
It was a substantial amount.
And when he opened the folder again, a document slipped out from between the financial statements.
It was an insurance application.
The beneficiary information had been changed.
The date beside the change was two weeks earlier.
But Daniel's signature appeared at the bottom of the page.
He stared at it.
"I never signed this one either.""
Neither of us spoke.
Because suddenly, the question wasn't simply why Claire had faked a pregnancy.
It was why she had needed so much money, why she had involved Marcus, and why she had gone to such lengths to obtain Daniel's signature.
My brother picked up his phone.
This time, he didn't call Claire.
He called the insurance company.
And while the phone rang, I noticed something written in small print near the bottom of the application.

A second person had been listed as an authorized contact.
*Marcus Bell.*
